This is a terrific book - a narrative nonfiction history of the Apollo program told mainly through the astronauts. The book will win over jaded resistant readers and often keep us glued. The astronauts are super smart, but also foolish and emotionally distant.

One thing that struck me was the scale of the moonscape. Pike‘s Peak sized mountains outside the landers.

Bookwomble Another book I loved reading! Have you been sneaking into my library while I've not been looking? 😄 1d
Graywacke @Bookwomble that‘s funny! I used an audiobook. So I would have had to steal your book and then find a reader. It is terrific. 1d

I am a big Scalzi fan and have read many of his books. This one didn't land as well for me. The first half really pulled me in, and then it started to drag a little. I did enjoy the vignettes of someone's life each day of the moon crisis. My favorites were the billionaire and the cheese feud.

My first time reading two #authoramonth books in a month! @Soubhiville

This was really interesting from a format perspective. The moon turning to cheese for no discernible reason? That's the foolishness I have learned to expect from this author.

This satire on our weird times makes excellent use of terrible cheese puns and is also very schadenfreudelicious... I half wondered if Scalzi wrote it as therapy. It suffers from not having a main character to follow and root for and inevitably comes off feeling insubstantial, like the lightest cheez whiz instead of a solid slab of cheddar. Just fine, if that's what you were wanting on your cracker. Pairing: Martians, Go Home.

Andy Weir may be an auto-read for me at this point, and I‘m not sure I can say that about any other scifi author.

This one is a heist in a lunar colony. Jazz is hired to sabotage the smelting company on the moon so a billionaire can take over their contract with the lunar government. Of course things don‘t go as she planned, and a fast paced race to avoid the law, a mafia, and save the day ensue.

Projects Hail Mary is still my AW fave, but 👍👍.

Soubhiville Not sure why Venkman is lying with Sietje‘s stuffed chicken, but he made me laugh so I used the photo op. 2w

TheAromaofBooks I didn't like this one as well as Project Hail Mary or The Martian, but it was still an entertaining read. 1w
Texreader We will be driving through Asheville on our way to Charlotte on Monday. We may not have time, but if we do would you be around for us to stop and say hello? 1w
Soubhiville @Texreader Oh fun! I saw you were in Blowing Rock, was it? I will be working from 9 to 4 or so, but if it‘s after that, yes definitely! Let me know later tonight what your plan is and we‘ll see what we can make happen. 🙂 I hope you‘re enjoying NC! 1w
Texreader @Soubhiville Loving it here!! We hope to be in Charlotte by about 4 so we will miss each other. 🙁 Any bookstores you recommend in Asheville? 1w
Soubhiville @Texreader That‘s too bad, but thanks for checking! My favorite bookstore is Malaprops, and it‘s across the street from Chocolate Fetish if you want a little treat. If you have time to walk around downtown a little, Downtown Book and News and Battery Park Book Exchange & Champagne Bar are walking distance from Malaprops, both used bookstores. Have fun! 1w

Mehso-so

Ten lucky winners are on their way to the grand opening of the Hotel Artemis, the first hotel on the moon. Two weeks of luxury & pampering awaits, however, the guests soon discover all is not as it seems. It soon becomes clear that they are the only people there, all the staff have mysteriously left. Detective Penelope Strand is sure that something nefarious is about to happen & sure enough, the next morning one of the group is found dead. (cont)

OutsmartYourShelf Is someone else hiding at the hotel or is one of the 9 remaining guests a killer?

I've said before I love the isolated location trope & there's few places more isolated than being stuck on the moon. When I started this one, I thought it was going to be a lunar-themed take on 'And Then There Were None', but there's not enough deaths for that. In fact, to say that this was a group of people isolated in the most extreme of circumstances,

OutsmartYourShelf there was hardly any jeopardy. There was a lot of back & forth, walking around the hotel & it felt quite slow for a thriller - the final 20% was much better but by then it was a bit too late. The MC (Penelope) was also a bit bland. It was an adequate thriller but I felt it was a little disappointing. 3.25⭐

A sweet, gentle story about a fox walking through the forest at night, on her way home. It‘s a perfect bedtime story due to its slow pace and gentle scenes. The illustrations add to the quiet feel of the book.

I highly recommend reading some children‘s books during this difficult time. It really helps with emotional regulation. Many children‘s books are designed for that very purpose.

Stunning illustrations and a very cute picture book. The book reads forwards and backwards about a girl who goes to her house, reads a book and imagines flying a bird in the night.

monkeygirlsmama No littles in my life anymore, but I still think I need to check this out! I love the concept of it reading both ways. 3w
booklover3258 I don't have kids but since I'm a childen's librarian I've been looking at these awesome books lately and of course recommending them to the parents. 3w
