North Woods | Daniel Mason
129 posts | 101 read | 3 reading | 67 to read
When a pair of young lovers abscond from a Puritan colony, little do they know that their humble cabin in the woods will become the home of an extraordinary succession of human and inhuman characters alike. An English soldier, destined for glory, abandons the battlefields of the New World to devote himself to apples. A pair of spinster twins navigate war and famine, envy and desire. A crime reporter unearths a mass grave - only to discover that the ancient trees refuse to give up their secrets. A lovelorn painter, a sinister conman, a stalking panther, a lusty beetle: as each inhabitant confronts the wonder and mystery around them, they begin to realize that the dark, raucous, beautiful past is very much alive. In his transcendent fourth novel, Pulitzer Prize finalist Daniel Mason delivers a magisterial and highly inventive tale brimming with love and madness, humor and hope. Following the cycles of history, nature and even language, North Woods shows the myriad, magical ways in which we're connected to our environment, to history and to each other. It is not just an unforgettable novel about buried secrets and inevitable fates, but a way of looking at the world.

Loved, loved, loved this! Beautifully written book about the history of a patch of land in Massachusetts. From its evolution from prehistoric woods to modern times and all of the people, plants and animals that inhabited the land over time. Such a wonderful read. I picked this up from the library but want to buy my own copy now to keep and treasure.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ brilliant brilliant brilliant. I read this based on a recommendation from someone I trust. Otherwise, I don‘t think I‘d have picked it up. Every chapter left me wanting (a lot) more. I actually underlined sentences because the prose was so clever and beautiful that I wanted to be able to go back and read it again. I can‘t imagine the brilliant mind that conceived of these threaded stories.

When I first started reading this book, I thought it might wasn't for me. But the more I read, the more I got into the story. I loved how layered the plot is, the different narration styles and the beautiful writing. The magical realism really fits the setting and the atmosphere, it just fits together perfectly. A wonderful book.

Amiable My elementary German again: does that translate to “up in the forests”? Wondering why that is how “North Woods” gets translated… ? Like, would a more direct translation be “Nord Wälder”? 5mo
Amiable And also? I LOVED this book. 😍 5mo
JamieArc @amiable Translations are so fascinating to me! I always wonder why a direct translation is often not used. 5mo

AmyG I loved this one, too. 5mo
Jari-chan @Amiable @JamieArc Yes, the German title says "Up in the Forests". "Nordwälder" would be the direct translation, but it's not a word that is used in German. One could use "Nordische Wälder", but that would sound more like nordic crime and wouldn't fit the book at all. I think they translated it quite alright like that. 5mo
Amiable @Jari-chan Thank you for explaining this! Like @JamieArc I‘m fascinated by how and why words get translated the way they do. 4mo
Jari-chan @Amiable a pleasure. Language is fascinating, isn't it? 4mo
Amiable @Jari-chan It is! I took a class in etymology in school and have always been interested in how languages and dialects evolve. 4mo
Jari-chan @Amiable Oh wow, that's so impressive! 4mo
Amiable @Jari-chan It‘s way more impressive to be fluent in multiple languages like you are! I wish I‘d started learning another language when I was younger —it‘s harder to do now that I‘m in my 50s. 😖 4mo
Jari-chan @Amiable I wouldn't consider myself fluent, though 😅 I wish I could speak more languages. And it's really cool that you're still going for it, you're never too old!! 4mo

By turns this book is a historical thriller, backwoods gothic horror, murder mystery noir, romance and who knows what else laid in front of the forest backdrop true to the book‘s title. A captivating story. The various plot threads woven so well make this a very fun, fun read.

This was a very refreshing read, spanning various themes and time periods, people, and creatures. I suppose it encapsulates life itself. The book is beautifully written, and the prose is very flowery. Reading this was like finding a bundle of various notes, letters, and reports in a relative's old attic. It has a feeling of wonder.

This was EXCELLENT. It‘s the story (or rather, the stories) of a house and its surrounding forest in New England; a multigenerational saga of sorts—but of a place instead of a family. We follow the people who come and go, but also the trees, the beetles, a catamount—as they both shape and are shaped by the unique history of the place in which they dwell, a place that outlasts them all. Each section has a very different feel, and between each, ⤵️

BarbaraJean (Cont‘d) …there are photographs, letters, and other ephemera from which readers piece together connections and digressions and clues about the place as we follow its story through time. Usually interconnected stories like this can feel disjointed to me, but the connections and clues kept me engaged and eager to read on. I loved the way the pieces added up to an interlinked whole, the structure echoing the known and unknown connections we forge ⤵️ 8mo
BarbaraJean (Cont‘d) …with the places we inhabit and the people who‘ve gone before us.

A slow starter for me, but the excellent writing drew me back in after leaving the book and reading several others before picking it back up. Having lived in rural MA I particularly enjoyed the descriptions of the setting of which the book is centered around over hundreds of years. In spite of all the damage humans can cause, the Earth is rather resilient and nature long outlasts those who inhabit a certain place.

This book tells the stories that transpired on a wooded plot of land over hundreds years. The premise may sound bland (according to friends) but this is among my favorite novels that I‘ve read over the past five years or more. This book is unique in structure and the writing style is beautiful. I could have just read descriptions of the orchard and forest and been quite happy. The narration in the audiobook edition is top notch.

I loved this wonderful book (and not just on account of the lusty beetles, fabulous though they were)! ❤️
It could so easily have felt episodic but each new inhabitant left their own mark whilst inheriting all that had gone before.
I found the notion of Robert's films surprisingly moving. And the final chapter just felt... right.

I absolutely adore the cover of this edition, and I quite enjoyed the book for its unique style of telling the story of a plot of land over generations. Mason captured the ways in which the land has changed and had change forced upon it - and the ways in which the land remembers its history. Occasionally had a few too many coincidences and supernatural for my preference, but overall a pick!

#2024ReadingBrackets are complete! My top selection for December was “North Woods“ -- it's magnificent! This would have been my top choice – if it had not been forced up against “Stoner” by John Williams. That book captured my heart in July and never let go. My FICTION pick for 2024 is “Stoner” – with the strong recommendation to also read “North Woods.”

JamieArc Stoner is one I would really like to get to in 2025. It‘s one of those books though that I‘ve heard such good things about that I‘m worried I‘ll be disappointed from too high expectations. 12mo

From the first pages of this incredible novel, the place is primary; the wonderful characters, chronicled across the ages, are defined by their relationship to this tract. For some it is an Eden, for some an escape, for others an opportunity, or a land to be exploited. Some find it a prison that allows no escape. The catamount hunts, ghosts attack interlopers or find solace within its confines. The story is magnificent, the writing sings. Wow!

I finished this gem abot three weeks ago for the book club I joined recently. I would not have read this novel without my new book buddies. What an interested ng read. I would call this an atypical historical novel because of its unusual main character, but also because of its changing literary styles and genres used. I highly recommend it.

Pickpick

I don‘t think I‘ve ever read a book quite like this. It was interesting that the land and its old rambling yellow house were the main characters. Those that inhabited it were intertwined in throughout the novel. I found the writing intriguing and colorful. Fantastical and fascinating at the same time. I kept wondering what would come next. This story was the “stuff of dreams,” and for those who of us who try to find meaning in them will love it!

AmyG I absolutely loved this one. 1y
