One For The Money
One For The Money: A Stephanie Plum Novel | Janet Evanovich
175 posts | 428 read | 2 reading | 56 to read
Watch out, world. Here comes Stephanie Plum, a bounty hunter with attitude. In Stephanie's opinion, toxic waste, rabid drivers, armed schizophrenics, and August heat, humidity, and hydrocarbons are all part of the great adventure of living in Jersey. She's a product of the "burg," a blue-collar pocket of Trenton where houses are attached and narrow, cars are American, windows are clean, and (God forbid you should be late) dinner is served at six. Now Stephanie's all grown up and out on her own, living five miles from Mom and Dad's, doing her best to sever the world's longest umbilical cord. Her mother is a meddler, and her grandmother is a few cans short of a case. Out of work and out of money, with her Miata repossessed and her refrigerator empty, Stephanie blackmails her bail bondsman cousin, Vinnie, into giving her a try as an apprehension agent. Stephanie knows zilch about the job requirements, but she figures her new pal, fearless bounty hunter Ranger, can teach her what it takes to catch a crook. Her first assignment: nail Joe Morelli, a former vice cop on the run from a charge of murder one. Morelli is also the irresistible macho pig who took Stephanie's virginity at age sixteen and then wrote the details on the bathroom wall of Mario's Sub Shop. There's still powerful chemistry between these two, so the chase should be interesting. It could also be extremely dangerous, especially when Stephanie encounters a heavyweight title contender who likes to play rough. Benito Ramirez is known for his brutality to women. At the very least, his obsession with Stephanie complicates her manhunt and brings terror and uncertainty into her life. At worst, it could lead to murder. Witty, fresh, and full of surprises, One for the Money is among the most eagerly awaited crime novels of the season.

Solid 3 stars. I work with trauma victims so I was not pleased with the level of violence and abuse. Major trigger warnings here ⚠️

The main character was unlikable but that makes perfect sense considering it's book 1 in a long series.

I liked the concept of her being a bounty hunter but im not sure it was successfully executed. Some of her dialog was so far fetched from normal everyday conversations.

I'll unlikely I'll pick up book 2.

brittanythebookdragon I read book 18 (kind of) like a year or so ago and I DNF because it‘s the same every book. Also, after 18 books, the love triangle is tiresome and frustrating. I wonder how I‘d feel about this series if I picked it up now versus back in senior year of high school when I found book 1. 4mo
LoverOfLearning Ahh yeah that seems like a fair assessment. I can say that if I picked this book up in high-school I would've had a way different perspective and likely would've picked up book 2. 4mo

Thanks for the tag @Eggs I didn't totally drop the ball this time! #WondrousWednesday 🦋❤

1. I have no idea, but it could be any of the following Charlaine Harris, Janet Evanovich, Cassandra Clare or Agatha Christie. All write very entertaining series.

2. I will read literally anywhere. Preference in NE in Feb is couch/living room.

3. I used to. It's a fun concept. But I kind of read all of the time now in the new normal.

Eggs Love Charlaine Harris❤️ Thanks for playing 🙏🏻 4mo

I have definitely been seeing Janet Evanovich‘s books in bookstores, etc. for years and always passed despite hearing good things. I finally figured I‘d give the author a try. Anytime I start a new series, I have to start at the very beginning. I like Stephanie Plum well enough. I‘m not hooked on the series just yet, but I am willing to read the next one to see the potential of this author.

This is between a pick and so-so for me. I had to keep reminding myself that Stephanie was new to bounty hunting because, boy did she do some stupid stuff. I‘ve heard such wonderful things about this series that I will give the second book a go.

This was my second finish for #nutsinmay another finish for #seriesread2021 and my #bookspin for February and May 😂

Traci1 Haha, Steph never really gets past the doing stupid stuff level of bounty hunting. But the books are great fun. Lula and Grandma Mazur kind of steal the show, though. 13mo

The Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich has made me laugh out loud. These books are my guilty pleasure!

Thanks for the tag @Eggs and @DarkMina ! ❤️❤️

slategreyskies That series cracks me up! I still remember the scene where Lula was on the Atkins diet and carrying bacon in her pockets, only to be chased down the street by a dog wanting her bacon. I laughed so hard I cried! 😂 😂 😂 2y

This is a reread for me. I‘ve enjoyed the first 15 books or so of this series and this is not my first reread of the earlier books. The characters are entertaining and memorable, even if the plots are not. I always forget how this one ends and I always forget that this is the one with the creepy, giggling, psychopathic boxer. Ramirez gives me nightmares. Not a huge fan of this narrator. I prefer Lorelei King who does later books.

Traci1 I've gone back and reread this one a couple times, and it's always a little jarring for me because this one seems a bit darker and more menacing than the later books. 2y
DGRachel @Traci1 You‘re right. I don‘t remember the others being nearly as scary. I may have to do a reread of the whole series on audio soon. 2y

I missed day 1 so here are two of my #top20series. The Stephanie Plum novels always make me laugh. I know so people say they are redundant at this point but I always look forward to a new one and a new set of laughs. The Mortal Instrument series is a love from high school. I love the magic, romance and overall story line. I‘m in the middle of a reread of this one #20series20days
