Read Banned Books. Because books from 1949 still make old white men in power nervous. Fascism is fragile, my friends.

Spirited and productive discussion at our library‘s “Read for Your Rights/Banned Books” book club tonight. In 1984 I was a high school junior and read this book for AP English. It didn‘t resonate with me then — all it meant was another essay I had to write for class. Now set against the context of what‘s happening in this country, this book is more than just prescient—it‘s absolutely terrifying.

I started reading George Orwell's "1984" over the weekend (I never actually read it in school ?) It was recommended to me in honor of the recent No King's Rallies. The three slogans of the Party are eerily familiar:

1. War is Peace
2. Freedom is Slavery
3. Ignorance is Strength

Completely forgot this was #BannedBooksWeek, so closing it out by rereading Orwell‘s “1984” for the first time in 30 years. Good grief, it‘s been 30 years since I was 18!!!

It‘s creepy and chilling how familiar some of this felt. I‘m glad I listed to it this week for Banned Books Week.

October is the right month for #BannedBooksWeek

Orwell‘s 1984 is absolutely terrifying and important now more than ever. Going to social media news between re-reading the chapters this week made for a strange blurring of reality and fiction.

Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past.

I read this in high school, and then it was chosen for my book club. That famous first line could have you fooled and hoping for a great adventure. I had no trouble reading it in school because it was past 1984 and hadn't happened. The themes are too on point. I tried to get beyond the 14th page but couldn‘t. Not in this world 41 years later.

I got a new backpack, but I‘ve already had these catch on things and fall off, so I‘m reluctant to transfer them to the new one!

Heavy. So many possible interpretations. Intense. Upsetting. It‘s all the things. 👁️

For some reason I was thinking it was pre-Trump Part 1! Time feels like it‘s collapsing on me. I saw it around July, I believe. Olivia Wilde made her debut in it as Julia (second from the left).

Would you believe I never formally read this cover to cover before? I saw a play interpretation on Broadway about 10-ish years ago (considering current affairs in the US, weren‘t we naive then?). It blows my mind the unexpected foresight Orwell seemed to have. Published in 1949 and yet…

I scored some b-e-a-u-tiful editions of some of the classics from an estate sale recently. They‘re all in pristine condition as well!

Not my fave dystopian novel but holy hell if it isn‘t good. There‘s so much in the book to unpack. The notion of not moving backwards, but keeping time frozen. The Thought Police. The disappearings.

There is no joy watching every predicted fear come true , there is no smug condescension in saying I told you so as this regime proves that us "overdramatic, doomsday, ridiculous people " were right.
I pray that enough people can and do fight back to stop it quickly.

I read this in high school and it started my love for dystopian novels. More recently I don't read much of the genre anymore because it is just too real sometimes 😬

I don‘t know - really. I‘ve only read the graphic novel and I liked it, but it only focussed on the love story. Now I listened to the audiobook and thought the whole story was pretty good. But I ended up pretty annoyed by Winston being whiny and insecure. The Winston actir in the audio play was this good, the whining was almost unbearable. 😳😳😳

Not your average holiday reread ! 😳😀

I read this for the first time in 27 years. It was much more impactful to me at this point in my life compared to when I was in college. I had also forgotten most of the work itself. I started with the Audible adaptation with Andrew Garfield and enjoyed it so much, I then listened to Orwell‘s original work. It remains a thought-provoking, relevant work.

Very relevant book to read after a Trump reelection.

A pretty tough book, not exactly a light read. It's an interesting world but I wasn't exactly mind-blown by it. 😔

I am kinda undone with myself because I DNF'd 1984. I was doing the audio for a bookclub (pairing with Newman's Julia) and then when I was unable to make bookclub I realized there were other things I wanted to read more than 84 for the fourth or fifth time. But still it is lingering in my mind so i will likely pick the audio back up!

A reread, almost 30-years to the day that I last read it for A-Level English Literature. Wanted to reread before Sandra Newman‘s retelling, Julia. I loved it then and I loved it again now. Can I feel another Orwell deep dive coming on?
