1984 | George Orwell
The year 1984 has come and gone, but George Orwell's prophetic, nightmarish vision in 1949 of the world we were becoming is timelier than ever. 1984 is still the great modern classic of "negative utopia" -a startlingly original and haunting novel that creates an imaginary world that is completely convincing, from the first sentence to the last four words. No one can deny the novel's hold on the imaginations of whole generations, or the power of its admonitions -a power that seems to grow, not lessen, with the passage of time.

I have finally read 1984! I don't know why I didn't read it a long time ago. The ending felt like a bit of a downer but having thought about it I see it as hopeful. Saying why I believe this book to be at its heart a book about hope would ruin the ending for those who have not read it. Do yourself a favor and read 1984. Hopefully you wont be disappointed.

A good classic. Dystopian social science fiction novel, published in 1949 but still relevant today.

a massive favourite for me, this book compelled me from the word go. it's story was only enhanced when i linked it towards the b-side tracks of David Bowie's 1974 album 'Diamond Dogs', enhancing my further re-reads of it.

It‘s been a while since I read this book. I remember finishing it well before its due date in high school. I recall technology and laws turned against the citizens for self gain. I remember lovers torn apart. It was psychologically provoking and disturbing, because some of his stuff was a prediction.

Absolutely amazing. It‘s eerie in today‘s world of banned books, fights for the erasure of less than ideal history, the oppression of the ‘low‘ class and the tyranny of the high, etc. It‘s made me think even deeper on what our society is and what it‘s on the path to becoming. It‘s a book that everyone should read.

#OnThisDay in 1949 George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four was first published. Orwell's ninth novel (and the last to be published in his lifetime) drew from his past involvement with British wartime propaganda initiatives. Orwell died shortly after publication, so he probably never heard about the slew of mistranslations of his famous opening line, wherein the clocks strike one (darn 24 hour clock is slightly less ominous). #HistoryGetsLIT

Pickpick

Nineteen Eighty Four is a story that takes place in a dystopian world controlled by “the Party” which has established total authority. The protagonist (Winston Smith) is a low-ranking member of the Party and develops a strong disdain for the lack of any individuality or freedom. This is an incredibly valuable read to anybody who wants to expand their knowledge in the world of information manipulation, one that has grown in relevancy as of late.

Benjamin.Rudko Point of view in the novel is in third person limited. This particular way of presenting the story is valuable, as the author allows us vision into the thoughts of Wilson while still being able to take a step back and allow the readers to criticize his actions from a different angle. Additionally, this view means we are able to receive insight outside of Wilsons field of knowledge without breaking the rock-solid narrative wide open. 8mo

Now that I've finished and thought about it.. Here my review, I hated it.. The Characters are blend and unlikable all of them, Very repetitive, a few good power points made but overall extremely boring.. I felt like I was reading an essay instead of story. I wanted to read at least one classic this year and I accomplished that. After hearing such high praise about this book for as long as I can remember it, I'm very disappointed.

Alfoster I think this is a hard one to read without some discussion! There‘s so much to debate and debrief that reading it on your own would be difficult and annoying! 9mo

A book that still shocked me even reading it a second time. A read that will have the wheels in your head turning! I find it so interesting that Orwell published this book the year before he died and didn‘t get to see the impact this book had on societies around the world. Even enough for some to ban his work. Such an standout read and must be on everyone‘s tbr!!

Alright all bit of a weird one here. Myself and my book club were trying to figure out what Orwell meant about this armchair. Out of general curiosity does anyone have any input on why he might have decided to use this word?

TrishB I think at the time Orwell will have meant unclean/dirty? 10mo
Bookwomble What @TrishB said. Slut originally referred to a woman who did not do her domestic chores well and kept a dirty, slovenly house. It was still misogynistic slut-shaming, though. 10mo
451Degrees @TrishB @Bookwomble I think this is a good interpretation. I couldn‘t believe it was in there and of all things describing an armchair🤦🏻‍♀️ 10mo

Bookwomble Well, there's always a book about it, whatever the incongruous juxtaposition, for instance: "The Curious Sofa: A Pornographic Tale by Ogdred Weary" by Edward Gorey ? 10mo
TrishB @Bookwomble Orwell not known for his feminism 😁 Much as I appreciate his socialism. 10mo
Bookwomble @TrishB It's funny how a political philosophy of equality can so often be embraced by some who are blind to the inequality inherent in the system (sorry, I heard myself turning into Michael Palin's oppressed serf in Monty Python and the Holy Grail 😁). 10mo
TrishB @Bookwomble 😁😁 tbh there were those in the suffragette movement that just wanted the educated, middle class women to have the vote. Not the great unwashed working class. We battle on for inclusion! 10mo
Bookwomble @TrishB And transphobic and racist feminists 🤷🏻‍♂️ We do battle on, and winkling out our own unquestioned assumptions being part of it 🙂 10mo
swynn The Oxford English Dictionary agrees with @TrishB: “sluttish, adj. ... 2.a. Of a thing: unclean, dirty, grimy; untidy. Now somewhat dated.“
Interestingly, the oldest attribution in the OED has the word referring to a man: in Chaucer's “Canon's Yeoman's Tale“ (1405): “Why is thy lord so sluttish?“, apparently referring to the lord's untidy dress or habits.

003. George Orwell: Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949)

Classic dystopia showing that Orwell was more polemicist than stylist. At one point it says the best books tell you what you already know; this lays it out effectively. Additional essay adds optimistic note to its bleak vision.

Life comes at you fast…especially when you read this novel and find yourself begging for it to slow down.

One thing I never hear anyone talking about really…the Kafka influence?

How the whole thing is basically Kafka on some crazy, world-building, depressant acid, a new drug made for the moment it was written but to last till fifty, seventy years into the future and well beyond that? The end.

(Also: the meadow scene is a thing of beauty.)

I just received this text from the #CovidPolice - I have tested positive for Covid and in order to quarantine at home I had to agree to allow my phone to be tracked for the next 5 days to make sure I adhere to the mandated quarantine protocol. I‘m pretty sure this type of surveillance would NEVER pass in other countries. It says they will FaceTime me in the next 5 days and I have 30 minutes to respond, to be sure I am home. I‘m still processing.

MrsMalaprop Oh my. So sorry to read that. Are you in Israel? Wishing you a speedy recovery. ❤️‍🩹🥰 10mo
