إن الولاء يعني انعدام التفكير ، بل يعني انعدام الحاجة إلى التفكير أيضا الولاء هو عدم الوعي
He knew that in the cubicle next to him the little woman with sandy hair toiled day in, day out, simply at tracking down and deleting from the press the names of people who had been vaporized and were therefore considered never to have existed. There was a certain #fitness in this, since her own husband had been vaporized a couple of years earlier.
The older I get the more respect I have for this book. I dont think i was old enough to appreciate it when i read it in HS. As an adult however i am able to appreciate the nuance of this book and the sutle things that happen that make this book so realistic and scary. Like O'Brien and his role in the party.
An important read for our time.
So i started reading this book and had a brief moment of panic right around the time winston starts to question the realty of what the world was like before the party took power. Because my brain was like: Did i really read this in HS or do i just think i read it because everyone read it in HS?!! How come i dont remember anything about this book... And then i remember human memory is totally fallible and that might be a useful tatic.
Definitely an apt read for the present times, though don‘t hope for answers to questions it leads you to ask. The despair I felt when I finished the book was like biting into a grapefruit - though you expect the sourness, it still hits surprisingly hard, and it‘s so deliciously sweet.
Spectacular. The way Orwell gives us futuristic view on totalitarianism is marvelous. A must read for all politically motivated people.
This isn't really related to this book at all but more my experience of reading in general maybe. After I finish this book... hopefully by the end of the week...this will be my 8th book read this year. I know to some that is hardly anything but to me it's an accomplishment. It's one book per month when last year and the beginning of this year I was struggling to be able to even concentrate long enough to read a page. Yay for small accomplishments
“Freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two make four. If that is granted, all else follows”.
Such a brilliant read. I was put off reading this after being forced to read ‘Animal Farm‘ in high school (I‘ve always resented being forced to read books not of my own choosing). Needless to say I‘m happy to have picked this up and forged ahead anyway. It is incredibly powerful, frighteningly insightful and so very relevant to our world today 👁
“If human equality is to be forever averted—if the High, as we have called them, are to keep their places permanently—then the prevailing mental condition must be controlled insanity.”
“The Party seeks power entirely for its own sake.”
“Power is not a means; it is an end. ....The object of persecution is persecution. The object of torture is torture. The object of power is power.”
“The essential act of war is destruction, not necessarily of human lives, but of the products of human labor. War is a way of shattering to pieces, or pouring into the stratosphere, or sinking in the depths of the sea, materials which might otherwise be used to make the masses too comfortable, and hence, in the long run, too intelligent.”
1984 takes longer than I thought to read, but I‘ll finish up this morning. Between audiobook (I‘ll be there for you) and physical book, I read 4 hours yesterday. Not sure I like timing my reading.

Hello guys. I am still relatively new to the habit of reading but picked up this classic book. 😊 Now with more relevant than ever with authoritarian regimes like China and Russia. If you have any books that you would like to recommend, please do so!! Thank you!
So I know that I have read this book before. I remember reading it. I remember parts of the book. I thought when I started it "it's been a while since I read a classic and I remember liking this one...".
It is not the time for this book. I thought it was and it is not. Kinda makes me sad that it's not holding my attention the way I felt it should. So I'm going to out it aside for now and look for something else.
I‘ve only read 2 books on this list. How many have you read?
𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐞‘𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐬 𝐈 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭:
📚Brave New World
📚The Maze Runner
📚The Handmaid‘s Tale
I‘ve read the first book in the Hunger Games Trilogy but I need to finish the second and third books in order to complete the series.
Book #57: Out of the four 100 Greatest Books lists, there are only a few books that appear on more than two lists. 1984 is one out of the few on multiple lists and I can understand why. 1984 is a very powerful novel dealing with possible totalitarian future society and how one might survive in such a society. The only problem I really had with this book...
Does anyone else love Thug Notes book summaries & analyses? They're so good!!
Power is in tearing human minds to pieces and putting them together again in new shapes of your own choosing.
Gave this a reread. In today‘s current climate, this is more horrifying than ever. It definitely meant more to me today than in my 20s.

"INTP: science fiction" thanks @rretzler for sharing this bustle article that tells you what you enjoy reading based on your personality type. https://www.bustle.com/p/the-genre-of-book-you-need-to-be-reading-based-on-your-.... I always get INTP so I'm science fiction?? which I agree with as long as it's existential and along the lines of Orwell or ray Bradbury ?♀️ if only there was a category for vampire romance lol
A good article on the book‘s relevancy today but beware, it describes how doublethink exists on both sides of the aisle at present.

Halfway between Pick and So-So, and landed on Pick primarily because the societal trends that this book addresses really resonate right now, despite the fact that this book was written in the 40‘s. I think it‘s important for anyone to read this book, but over all it left me feeling deflated. This book evokes a such a weird conglomeration of emotions...
