I gave up buying books for Lent (tricky when amazon deals are everywhere) and my sweet Mama gifted me these two books for Easter!! Happy Easter everyone!

RebeccaRoo7 I did that too!! This really tested my willpower. 1mo
ReadingMeagan @RebeccaRoo7 Mine too! So many books went on sale for great prices that I have wanted to read. And that the library didn‘t have. But I stayed strong! 1mo

sixgun @HufflepuffGirl90 I just noticed your name. Rock on name sister. I have such a difficult time getting through classics. Audio books are my friend, but even so, I struggle. Billypar Yes it does! I wonder what the process was to create the list- like did he start with a list of 5,000 and whittle it down, or just keep adding here and there until he reached 1,000? 🤔 Or just take all his 5 star picks on Goodreads? 😁 6mo
Librarybelle @Billypar I know! I should look to see if he defines his criteria. Wouldn‘t it be funny if it was the 5 star GR picks? 🤣 6mo

The thing I liked about this tome was that he was all over the map with genres, fiction and nonfiction. There were a lot of titles that I haven‘t seen referenced in a book like this before, so that was a treat. Not a rehash of anybody else‘s list. Definitely unique. Mount TBR continues to grow!

Of course I had to buy this! And I have spent the last 2 days going through it. It is quite different from 1001 Books (tagged below). This one includes nonfiction, poetry, plays, children‘s books, and of course adult fiction. Also, it has 1 main selection for nearly all authors, with “also by”, “additional reading”, and “try” selections for each book—those extras aren‘t counted in the 1000, nor are they in the checklist. I am at 144/1000.

BarbaraBB I‘ve read 197 but there are many books on this list that I‘ll never read. I prefer Boxall with just fiction. Do you? 7mo
AudreyMorris @BarbaraBB I can‘t decide! I love that this book has just 1 book by most authors. I don‘t love that Children‘s picture books are included (I didn‘t count most of these because I don‘t know if I‘ve read them). I love that Shakespeare and other playwrights are included, and that Euripides, Plato, etc are in here. But many Chinese classics are not (Monkey, the Water Margin), but it feels like more Indian authors are. 7mo
See All 7 Comments
AudreyMorris I also love nonfiction, but a lot of this is stuff I would never read—so much science. But maybe I would actually like it? He did include John McPhee, yay!, who is one of my favorite NF writers and now people have never heard of him. It also includes 2 books that I love and consider seriously underrated: The Girl in Hyacinth Blue (novel) and Holy Land: A Suburban Memoir (memoir/essay). Wallace Stegner is also included! I also feel like there are 7mo
AudreyMorris More works on Italy, but maybe not by Italians. There are also books in here that I did not much enjoy (Peter Mayle). But I think I may read from this too. And of course there is lots of overlap. 7mo

99 already read.... only 901 to go! 😳

Lcsmcat I was keeping track for awhile. But they keep changing the list! It‘s like trying to hit a moving target. 7mo
Notafraidofwords OK I have a question. How are the pages set up. Did they give an exclamation for each book.? 7mo
KarenUK @notafraidofwords It‘s listed alphabetical by author, and yes there is a page for each book, with descriptions of why it was chosen, a featured passage or quote, advice on which edition to choose, any adaptations to stage or screen, and finally some suggestions for further reading which is fun..... B&N exclusive copy comes with a poster that is a checklist to keep track 👍😊 (edited) 7mo

Notafraidofwords @KarenUK omg awesome !!! I‘m going to check it out 7mo
vivastory @Lcsmcat This is a different volume from Boxall's 1,001 Books. Honestly, I liked this one more than the Boxall. It includes poetry, nonfiction & plays; making for a fuller reading list imho. 7mo
vivastory @Lcsmcat Also, I find Mustich's synopsis to be livelier & impassioned than the somewhat dry academic ones in Boxall's. 7mo
vivastory @Notafraidofwords it's probably my favorite book about books 7mo

I've been meaning to read Greil Marcus for years. Mystery Train, his history of the cultural roots of modern rock sounds informative & fascinating. It includes discussion of legendary bluesman Robert Johnson, who supposedly sold his soul to the devil for musical fame.

Leftcoastzen I have not read mystery train but one of my favorite books ever is 7mo
vivastory @Leftcoastzen That is also high on my TBR. BTW, did you go ahead & purchase the tagged book? 7mo

After @vivastory brought this book up I started Googling and found the list online. You can even count the ones you‘ve read (I looooove lists). Check it out here if you like: https://www.listchallenges.com/1000-books-to-read-before-you-die-a-life

I do think however I prefer #1001books by Boxall, as it is more fiction focussed. This one‘s interesting too though!

saresmoore Ooh, yay, another list! 7mo
saresmoore Goodness, I‘ve only read 118 of this list and there are several I hadn‘t even heard of! So much Proust! 7mo
DivaDiane I “only” read 120. I find that list a little frustrating though. I‘ve read many books by authors on the list, but not the one on the list! I‘ve also read a lot of Steinbeck, Hardy and LeGuin but no Kafka or Campbell, Balzac or a number of authors for which there were several books to choose from but not so many of the ones I‘ve read almost everything! 7mo
See All 14 Comments
BarbaraBB @saresmoore On the other #1001books list they count as one; 7mo
BarbaraBB @DivaDiane I too saw many authors of which I read other books than the ones mentioned here! And so much mythology, which I haven‘t read! 7mo
saresmoore Oh, that makes sense. The lists are similar, but I agree that I tend to prefer 1,001‘s selections. 7mo
Sarah83 Looks great 💖 7mo
DivaDiane @BarbaraBB Yes, and a lot of classic Greek and Roman Lit! None of which I‘ve actually read (but know the details). 7mo
BarbaraBB @DivaDiane Neither have I. I like that its focus is broader but that excludes many of the books I like! 7mo
BarbaraBB @DivaDiane Sorry, i accidently unfollowed you but I‘m immediately following you again ;) 7mo
DivaDiane Haha! No worries. I saw that you‘d followed me and wondered, “wait, wasn‘t she already?”🤪 7mo
BarbaraBB @DivaDiane 😂 Exactly! That‘s why I wanted to explain it! 7mo
Reviewsbylola You go girl!! I just got 115. So many books on that list that I‘ve never even heard of! 7mo
BarbaraBB @Reviewsbylola Indeed! Plus many that I really don‘t want to read 🤣 7mo

On "Dune"
BTW the David Lynch adaptation is an undeniable disaster, HOWEVER...it led to his suburban surrealism of Blue Velvet etc. So, not a total loss.
Also, "Jodorowsky's Dune" is one of my favorite documentaries about a movie never completed. Absolutely fascinating.
I can't wait for Denis Villeneuve's two part adaptation. He's more than proven himself with the superior "Arrival" & "Blade Runner 2049"

TobeyTheScavengerMonk Dune is alway that book on every list of Great Sci-fi You Must etc. that I have not read... Maybe next year? 100% agree with your David Lynch assessment. Love Villeneuve‘s work as well. 7mo
vivastory @TobeyTheScavengerMonk I've heard mixed reviews of the first two sequels he wrote. I read Dune & loved it, but have very little interest in the sequels. 7mo
vivastory @TobeyTheScavengerMonk Villeneuve's fantastic. His films have made my best of the year list for the past three years. 7mo

I feel like I've been caught in a literary indiscretion admitting this, but I might very well like the tagged book more than 1,001 Books editions. 😬🙊

Booksnchill I just bought this and it is so engrossing! 8mo

vivastory @Booksnchill His descriptions are wonderful & every single book he has mentioned so far sounds fascinating! 8mo
See All 14 Comments
vivastory @Leftcoastzen You should definitely try to make it! It'd be really fascinating to learn more about it. 8mo
BarbaraBB Another 1000 books to read before you die?!? 8mo
vivastory @BarbaraBB Plus at the end of each entry are suggestions for further reading, one reviewer called it the If you like this feature on steroids. 8mo
BarbaraBB Oh man, I‘ll never have time to die 😂! Is the focus on American books or international? 8mo
vivastory @BarbaraBB There's a good selection of international literature, but quite a bit of it is English language. 8mo
BarbaraBB So you would recommend it (somehow I hope you‘ll say No 😉)? 8mo
vivastory @BarbaraBB Absolutely not. It's a total waste of time. J/k Honestly, I love it. I love Boxall's book, but the descriptions are a bit dry at times. For years Muncin was involved in a book catalog, & it shows. His passionate, carefully considered synopsis of the books are pleasurable to read. The majority of the selections are novels, but he includes poetry & nonfiction, making for a more balanced list. 8mo
vivastory @BarbaraBB *Mustich 8mo
BarbaraBB Well that settles it then 😬. #Stacked. And another 1,000 books to read! 7mo
Liz_M I am less familiar with the genre titles and nonfiction in this list, but it also includes plays. 😍 7mo
vivastory @Liz_M There's quite a bit of nonfiction included. His passage on Euripides made me reconsider my prior evaluation of his work (he was always my least favorite of the Greek tragedians) & I will definitely be rereading it. 7mo

I've never seen this screen before in my life! 😱 But yes, it's true: I currently have zero books checked out from the library!! I keep checking books out and neglecting the books I own, books mind you that I want to read, I just keep pushing them to the side to read the ones I get from the library. So this month---no library books. It's only for a month....I can handle it...Now excuse me while I go cry a little. #librarylove #readwhatyouown

mcipher Oh, wow!! That sounds like such a weird feeling. I hope it‘s a good reading month anyway. 8mo

Settling into the new house, and now it‘s starting to feel like home.

Yesterday friends came over (big family with kids who love to read). I told them they could have free reign in my library if they helped unpack all the books. They were thrilled! Saved me at least three days of work, even with moving things around afterward.

post image

Never have we had such a giant poster! How does someone even have a printer big enough to make this?!
James Mustich will be signing galleys tomorrow at 9:30am (Friday) at Workman‘s #BEA booth 2007! What books do you think belong in here??

ScientistSam Ooh, I'd love to know what books made it in! 12mo
ScientistSam I have so many😜 Is it only one person author or do some have multiple? And can I include plays? (Though thinking about this just reinforces to me how much I love 19th century lit!) 12mo
Kaylamburson It‘s really interesting to see the list. And it‘s much more than literary classics. It has every genre from romance to literary to historical and non-fiction. It‘s alphabetical by author so you could be reading about a children‘s book just to go right into a horror book. @ScientistSam 12mo
Kaylamburson Some could have multiple authors! I believe everything in here were originally books, but they do reference any plays, movies, shows, etc that are tangential to these books. @ScientistSam 12mo
