Welcome to Night Vale
Welcome to Night Vale | Joseph Fink, Jeffrey Cranor
Praise for Welcome to Night Vale“This is the novel of your dreams. . . . A friendly (but terrifying) and comic (but dark) and glittering (but bleak) story of misfit family life that unfolds along the side streets, back alleys, and spring-loaded trapdoors of the small town home you’ll realize you’ve always missed living in.”—Glen David Gold, author of Carter Beats the Devil and Sunnyside“Those of us who have gotten to know Night Vale through Cecil Palmer’s biweekly radio broadcasts can finally see what it’s like to actually live there. It is as weird and surreal as I hoped it would be, and a surprisingly existential meditation on the nature of time, reality, and the Glow Cloud that watches over us.”—Wil Wheaton“Take Conan’s Hyboria, teleport it to the American Southwest, dress all the warriors in business casual and hide their swords under the floorboards — that’s Night Vale: absurd, magical, wholly engrossing, and always harboring some hidden menace.”—John Darnielle, author of Wolf in White Van“I’ve been a fan of Welcome to Night Vale for years, and in that time writers Jeffrey Cranor and Joseph Fink have delighted me with stories that are clever, twisted, beautiful, strange, wonderful, and sweet. This book does all of that and so much more. It’s even better than I’d hoped. I think this might be the best book I’ve read in years.”—Patrick Rothfuss, author of The Name of the Wind“This small town full of hooded figures, glowing clouds, cryptically terrifying public policies, and flickering realities quickly feels more like home than home. . . . There is nothing like Night Vale, in the best possible way.”—Maureen Johnson, author of 13 Little Blue Envelopes and The Name of the Star“They’ve done the unthinkable: merged the high weirdness and intense drama of Night Vale to the pages of a novel that is even weirder, even more intense than the podcast.”—Cory Doctorow, author of Little Brother and coeditor of Boing Boing

This book was weird is the best way. I recommend listening to the podcast before starting the book ( even if it‘s just 1 ep) so you can get a feel of what it‘s going to be like. The way I word it is nightvale is a town where every conspiracy theory exists and the citizens don‘t really think anything of it. I recommend using the audiobook as the authors originally wrote podcasts and I found i enjoyed it more when I listened to it. Highly recommend!

1. 🤷‍♀️
2. 17 (over & above the original number on phone); mostly book-related
3. Drop 7 (too addictive: I don‘t have any games on my phone now)
4. The actual phone app: switched from iPod to phone 2 years ago, no longer have landline

Thanks @tournevis for tag.

Eggs Thanks for joining in 🤗👏🏻 3w
Lindy PS. I hung this post on Welcome to Night Vale because the podcast app is one of my favourites (tied with Libby and Litsy). Also, because Drop 7 was mentioned on Night Vale back in the days when that game app was hot. 3w

I love this podcast and I really enjoyed the book. I was super excited to find the audiobook on Libby. I really wanted to listen to the audiobook because it's read by who else, but the Voice of Night Vale. Libby also has the second book, but not as an audiobook.
The good news is I've recently moved to a new location, so maybe the new library will have it. If not I will settle for reading it, but probably still in Cecil's voice.

Hi #lmpbc #GroupW reading buds! Here‘s a stack of choices I was considering. Let me know what you think!!

BethM I‘ve tried to get through Nightvale 3 times and haven‘t been able to. I‘d give it a shot if that‘s what everyone else wanted. My pick would be Altered Carbon but good choices! (edited) 2mo
SarahHarts_books I read Gold Fame Citrus and hated it. I had the hardest time getting through it. The actual story line would've been ok, but there were just pages and pages on nonsense. I don't know, maybe you'll have an easier time reading it. But I have been wanting to read Vox that looks good! 2mo
cobwebmoth I haven't read any of them, so I'm totally open to whichever one you pick. 2mo
Chrissyreadit I‘ve not read any of them. I‘m open to consensus or your choice 2mo

Book 40 of the year, finished May 21, audio.

Im rounding up, but this was somewhere between a pick and a so-so. I really enjoy the podcast and it was fun to get more detail about individual characters than you get with the show, but I didn't like it quite as much as I thought I would.

Plot wise, it solves the mystery of The Man in the Tan Jacket with the Deer Skin Breifcase.

I'm (sadly) not very good with audiobooks/ podcasts, because I tend to zone out completely after some time, but I manage to listen to an episode of Welcome to Night Vale every once in a while. Still lagging behind by about five years, but I'm slowly making process. All hail the Glow Cloud!

WhatWouldJaneDo I love podcasts when I'm doing certain repetitive activities, but some work better than others for me. I tend to like listening to people having a conversation (or multiple actors in fiction, or at least someone good with voices) or I tune out more. I'm trying out audiobooks more, figure it'll be similar and some genres/narrators won't be for me. 3mo
scripturient-ink @WhatWouldJaneDo I wish I could listen to more podcasts, when I manage to actually pay attention, I do quite like them! It's just really exhausting for me, so I need to be in the right mood. I guess I'm just more of a visual person :D Any podcasts that you thought were easy to listen to? 3mo
WhatWouldJaneDo @scripturient-ink for fictional ones, I liked The Bright Sessions and Alice Isn't Dead a lot. I'm a fan of a lot of Wondery's shows for long form true crime (Dirty John, Dr. Death, and To Live and Die in LA are all really good). I usually listen while I'm reviewing stuff at work so my eyes are doing one thing that doesn't need a ton of brain power and then my mind doesn't wander (cleaning is also good for this combo). 3mo
scripturient-ink @WhatWouldJaneDo Oh yes, I've been wanting to give Alice Isn't Dead a try. The Bright Sessions sound interesting too, thanks! Maybe I'll try listening to podcasts while jogging, that's definitely a no-brainer :D 3mo
WhatWouldJaneDo @scripturient-ink that's a great idea! I'd definitely have trouble paying attention if I was just sitting and listening so I think finding the right activity pairing makes a big difference. Hope you find some that work for you, there's a lot of great stuff out there! 3mo

WTF am I listening to?! I just can‘t do it anymore. I know this is an #unpopularopinion but 🤷🏻‍♀️. I will just have to choose another book for the #relatedtoapodcast prompt for #booked2019.

Reggie Try reading one of the Moth Podcast books. I read the first one and loved it. People telling important personal stories. Soo good and fits the prompt. 5mo
BridgetteM @Reggie Thank you so much for the recommendation! I will check it out. :) 5mo
Gina I think this is a play on "big brother" gaslighting and out of the box weirdness. It is definitely an acquired taste. I would second the moth podcast. I have been listening to them for over a decade and love it. 5mo

BridgetteM @Gina I will agree that there is a hefty dose of weirdness. I just couldn‘t get into it. 5mo
jpmcwisemorgan I found the book really odd but I knew that going in - it would have been better for me if I‘d listened to the podcast first. I did it backwards and there were a lot of ohhhhhh moments. 5mo
BridgetteM @jpmcwisemorgan Maybe that is my problem. I‘ll have to check out the podcast and give the book another chance. Thanks for the tip! 5mo

This may be the most surreal book I‘ve ever read. It‘s definitely growing on me. A work colleague is going to see a live performance of the pod cast in Albuquerque in March. In many ways fits with the quirkiness of my home state of New Mexico, prime example being Roswell. 😜

This is my first read as part of my goal to read 12 book I already own this year. I put it off for a super long time because even though I love the podcast, I wasn't sure it would work as a book.

Fortunately, it works great as a book. The story is weird and fun and a little unsettling in all the best ways. I'm glad I finally read it after leaving it on my shelf for too long.

my #Booked2019 #RelatedToAPodcast Time is weird in Night Vale & that‘s the least of it.I had only listened to 2 episodes of the podcast. This book is weird , wacky ,and sometimes laugh out loud funny.I could see how it‘s surreal twists could get on people‘s nerves, but I did enjoy it.Remember , no dogs are allowed in the dog park.Took the photo with my Festivus pole which I dare say is a bit odd itself.

This book was as weird and wonderful as the podcast. Read if you like the podcast or just want a surreal experience. Though one of the best parts of the podcast (other than the odd stories) is Cecil Baldwin. He also performs the audiobook. Not sure I would have enjoyed it as much just reading the text. And be warned - you will forever think differently about plastic pink flamingos and librarians!

LiterRohde @Cinfhen I think it could go either way. I listen to the podcast and I‘m still not sure I get what I just read. Yes, the podcast introduces you to characters and settings and internal workings of the town so it is familiar to you when you read the book, but it is still just plain weird. That you must be ready for either way. I guess one advantage of the podcast is it‘s short-form, so you don‘t have to invest much time to see if you like the style. 7mo

Heard this gem while listening to this book on my way in to work (as a Librarian) today. This book is sooo weird, but it keeps making me laugh out loud, which a book hasn‘t done in quite some time! “Librarians are hideous creatures of unimaginable power.” 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Leniverse Have you listened to the podcast? It‘s weird and wonderful in the best of ways. 7mo
MelissaSue81 @Leniverse - no, I never have. I picked this up somewhat randomly. I might try it sometime.. 7mo
Leniverse Oh, you should! And start at the beginning. While there are some free standing episodes, and shorter story arcs lately, it is so much better to start with episode one and get the full story. The podcast is arranged like a radio show, so it‘s different from the book but you‘ll meet many of the same characters. And great music! 7mo
Librarybelle Well, we do indeed have unimaginable powers! Haha! 7mo
LiterRohde I‘m listening to this at the moment. I love the podcast, and this book is just as wonderful and strange. However, I think it would not work as well if I was reading it as opposed to listening to it. The narrator makes the book and the podcast, in my opinion. I love his voice. If you like the book, I too (along with @Leniverse) think you should try the podcast from the beginning (it‘s only 140 episodes!). (edited) 7mo

First off, I've never listened to the podcast, so this story was completely new to me. This was a fun, kooky, very unique book that follows all sorts of interesting characters through their daily routines. Night Vale is an unusual town, but you'll find yourself wishing you lived there. People with powers, strange animals, aliens, that's just some of what you'll find. I loved the radio news updates at the beginning of each chapter too. 👍
