Black Cat | Edgar Allen Poe

Mehso-so

Black Cat by Edgar Allan Poe was our final #octoberreads #halloweenreads selection for #litereads this month. I know I enjoyed it, but it certainly won't be a favourite of mine (I prefer some of Poe's other stories far more). Be sure to let me know what you thought. You can read my full review in the link below.

Melwilk I love this story, but it‘s pretty gruesome. We just did it at my school, and the students love it. They love the ending. 8mo
elizabethlk @Melwilk I think it was a bit the wrong type of gruesome got my taste, but I can definitely see how others would get a thrill out of it. 8mo

This is one of the more violent stories we have looked at with #litereads particularly regarding animals, as well as a slight case of murder. It may be perfect for #halloweenreads but people have different feelings and reactions to violent stories. What did you think of the violence here? How does it compare to modern violence? #octoberreads

Poe has written a number of stories that portray characters overcome by their guilt over past bad deeds. What do you think of the guilt in this story? How does it compare to other Poe stories you have read that also portray guilt?

Big Pumpkin | Erica Silverman

Pickpick

Big Pumpkin by Erica Silverman, illustrated by S.D. Schindler is another of my all time favorite halloween reads from my childhood! When I heard that there was also a sung version of the book, I just had to give it a reread and a listen! The book was just as lovely as I remembered!

How do you think the mood of Edgar Allan Poe's Black Cat suits the Halloween season?
Day 29 of #riotgrams also calls for cats, and it is a happy coincidence (although a morbid one given the content) that it should align with our Halloween week pick for #LiteReads

“Nearly only counts in horseshoes and hand-grenades.”(p.156) I‘ve been so busy with school my October TBR has fizzled down to just this book which is perfect for Halloween. I‘m about halfway through, any suggestions for which Neil Gaiman book I should read next? #neilgaiman #halloweenreads #suggestions

My daughter asked me to pre-read to see if it‘s any good. 😂

May be the first book of our mother-daughter book club. 😊
