A Caribbean Mystery
A Caribbean Mystery | Agatha Christie
34 posts | 49 read | 18 to read
As Jane Marple sat basking in the tropical sunshine she felt mildly discontented with life. True, the warmth eased her rheumatism, but here in paradise nothing ever happened. Then a question was put to her by a stranger: 'Would you like to see a picture of a murderer?' Before she has a chance to answer, the man vanishes, only to be found dead the next day. The mysteries abound: Where is the picture? Why is the hotelier prone to nightmares? Why doesn't the most talked-about guest, a reclusive millionaire, ever leave his room? And why is Miss Marple herself fearful for her life? Of note: A Caribbean Mystery introduces the wealthy (and difficult) Mr Jason Rafiel, who will call upon Miss Marple for help in Nemesis (1971) -- after his death.

#wanderingjune @Cinfhen @BarbaraBB In this Miss Marple mystery, she‘s trying to have a nice #dreadlockholiday when murder encroaches on her downtime! Also, not related to the book at all, but I had to add in a reminder of Monica‘s Barbados hair from Friends - hilarious!

Cinfhen Ha!!!! I forgot about that!!! Hilarious 3d

Miss Marple plays up the old lady charms and I‘m confident will find the murderer. I think this will help prepare me for a murder mystery escape room I‘m doing soon. After I mentioned that, a friend suggested I dress up in an old lady wig, sit in a chair the whole time, and give everyone else directions. 👀👣👂🏻🕵🏻‍♀️

#Booked2019 - a female detective

Although some of the references in this book, though typical of the time it was written, are offensive, Miss Marple is as amazing as ever. I love how everyone underestimates her until the end when she puts it all together and solves the murder.

Cinfhen Congrats❣️❣️❣️❣️You‘ve completed the first quarter🙌🏻 4mo

Starting this one today. It will be a “female detective” book for #Booked2019 and a “book published before you were born” for #mmdchallenge. #DoubleDip

MaGoose This one's great. Then read Nemesis, which features Miss Marple and Mr. Rafael (spelling?) again. 5mo
jenniferajanes @MaGoose Thanks for the suggestion! I haven‘t ever read this one, and I do t believe I‘ve read Nemesis either. I‘m going to look for it now! 5mo

House/pet sitting for a friend and I'm powering through my TBR pile. I enjoy a little bit of Christie as a palate cleanser between my urban fantasy. Surprised by how racist the characters are, but I'm sure it's a sign of the times. Thankfully things have changed. The killer was so predictable I expected a curve-ball and that it was someone else, simply because it was 'too simplistic'. Not one of the better Marples, still good

A Caribbean Mystery: in which Miss Marple takes a Caribbean holiday and, naturally, finds herself in the perfect position to investigate a series of murders at her holiday hotel. 🌴🌞🔪 I just loved stealthy and clever Miss Marple in this one. Some good twists and turns, a few awkward sections about the islanders, quite a few red herrings, and a satisfying conclusion. Shall we call it... three and a half palm trees out of five? 😆
🌴🌴🌴🏝

HKGirl Was this the one with some really awful North American accents? I can't remember if it was this or Nemesis, but I was cringing so hard 😝 9mo
BarbaraJean @HKGirl This one had a couple moments of terrible American accents, but they were blessedly brief. Now I‘m worried for Nemesis, since that‘s next in line!! 9mo

Designing covers which shows the point of a mystery without giving it away, is difficult. I don‘t think this one succeeds.

My first Miss Marple mystery. It was pretty good! A series of murders at a hotel. A lot of people to keep straight in this one. Still I got there and couldn‘t guess the murderer as usual lol! I enjoyed the story and can‘t wait for my next!

LauraBrook Crap! Thank you for the inadvertent reminder. Sorry I haven't responded to the email, I'm a dunce. Have been working on a stack for about a week. It's about 8 books, though I've still got dozens to choose from. Should I just send these 8 and then see how the totals are going? Sorry. 2y

#JuneTunz #day12 #LaIslaBonita Going through my pretty extensive library, I've realised I don't really read books set in happy sunny places. Most of my books are set in dark, crime ridden, forestry type places. Guess I'm all dark inside😈 This is the only one I could find set in a tropical island setting, it still has a murder in it though. Guess I'm all dark & twisty, just call me Meredith Grey😏

Cinfhen Haha! I like you all dark & twisty😍😘 2y

Onto the last unread Dame Agatha I own.I have all Miss Marple books, but there's a couple of Poirots I still need. This is No10 in Marple, after being told to go somewhere warm for her health,Miss Marple heads to the Caribbean where she makes the acquaintance of a talkative old soldier, who tells her a story about a murderer,he goes to show her a photo but he's distracted. When he turns up dead the next day, suspicions arise. #christiescrimeclub

thegirlwiththelibrarybag One day, when I live somewhere with more room, I think I'll collect Agatha Christie books... I feel like I've read the majority of them... I used to have great luck finding tatty old paperback editions in opshops for .20c ☺ 2y
Lizpixie @thegirlwiththelibrarybag I have almost all of these signature editions, but I also collect the omnibus editions of the Christie Crime Collections from the 80s. They're so daggy, but I love them! I'm always checking out op shops for more. 2y
Jaimelire Love all her books! 2y
Dragon That cover is so cool 😎👍 2y
Lizpixie @Dragon it is, but it's misleading as well. There's no cruise ship in the story at all! 2y

#throwbackthursday My habit of scouring used bookstores started back when I was in college (1980s!) and on a student budget. All I really read back then were mysteries and no longer have most of them or even really read mysteries still -- but I've kept all my Agatha Christies (I count 65). Most of the covers are from the 80s era, but this one has a pub date of 1974 and the cover really shows it 😂!

HeatherBookNerd OMG that cover! 3y
HeatherBookNerd I don't remember naked people groping in any of the Agatha Christie books I read... 3y
ValerieAndBooks @heatherbooknerd That's what's so hilarious about it ?! That, and the attempt in making Miss Marple look "modern". 3y
