American Gods | Neil Gaiman
post image

I decided quite awhile ago that, though I love Neil Gaiman as a person, his books aren‘t my thing. So why did 8 have a burning need al of sudden to re-read American Gods? It was like a serious food craving.

ravenlee I didn‘t much care for this one when it first came out, but for years now I‘ve been really wanting to read it again. But this time I won‘t pay sticker price! 2w
Patchshank I think even if you don't like Neil Gaiman, there is a certain appreciation for Neverwhere and American Gods. It's just what I've observed. I'm a Neil Gaiman fan and like almost everything he's done. Stardust has been the only thing I haven't really liked. 2w
Karisa It's one of my all time favorites. I love the concept and all the nods to mythology. One of the few books I have read more than once (normally a one and done type of reader). 2w

Zelma @ravenlee so strange how we are drawn to books like food cravings. It‘s unexplainable. 😆 2w
Zelma @Patchshank @Karisa I remember liking it when I last read it but not loving it. However, I devoured the first season of the tv show and it made me want to revisit. For being 10 years since I last read it, it feels very familiar. 2w

Here is my #LitsyNeighborhood photo. It doesn‘t matter what direction I point my camera; it all looks the same. I live in the country surrounded by sugar cane fields. Summer Reading is here and I am exhausted. Looking forward to my one day off this week, drinking coffee in my new Natl Parks mug and reading a easy teen thriller. But on the plus side, library events have been a success. One week in and we had 397 participants at our programs. If the numbers reflected our usual attendee from the school year, we only expected about 150. 😱😃💪

Severnmeadows Envious of your National Parks mug 😊 2w

Susannah @kspenmoll it‘s still really fun, though I barely get to national parks anymore since I‘ve moved to California. When I lived in Mississippi, there were a lot of them very close together. California, less so. 😉 2w

There isn‘t anything new to say about this one, as so many Littens have already read it. However, this was so up my alley and I just loved it. There were a few too many coincidences and ways the characters crossed paths, but I still enjoyed being in this world for awhile and living with these particular characters. It made me smile, cry, and feel lots of emotions, and I was sad to move on to a different book after. It rarely gets better than that.

Unfortunately, I have been on a roll with bailed reads and books that just aren‘t working for me. I like the idea of this but not far in, I realized I hated main characters and was only interested in the flashbacks of their parents‘ stories. I might have stuck it out with unlikeable characters but their actions made so sense so I‘m moving on.

I couldn‘t do it. I‘m suspecting that Ian McEwan and I no longer get along. I absolutely loved a couple of his earlier books but the more recent ones feel cold and pretentious and lack the depth that I expect and want. This has such an interesting premise but gets bogged down by one character‘s secret past and is just boring on top of everything. Moving on.

Vinjii Atonement is one of my favourite books. Oh well. I guess things do change. 2mo

I was so excited about Walker‘s newest novel after loving The Age of Miracles. Unfortunately I really didn‘t care for this at all. The writing was nice, if a little distant.and I wanted to see what happened to the characters, but the plot felt way too familiar and unfinished. My overall impression was that this book has already been done before many times, and I still didn‘t know what was going on or really the whole point by the end.

readordierachel Bummer, this sounded so good! 2mo

Holy moly, I love this book! I have been on a linked short stories kick recently, but I felt like this tied more together as a novel then, say, Olive Kitteridge. This was really a series of snapshots of a family tree, each chapter a different voice. I referred to the family tree in the front the book quite a bit but never found the book confusing. So evocative, tragic, hopeful, and very difficult at times. Just excellent.

I had high hopes for this one but it depressed me even more. By page 70, amidst the anecdotes and statistics about the current retirement/employment situation in the U.S., the only recommendation was to skip expensive brunch and go out for $4 coffee instead. I felt like it just dumping more negativity on me as a reader. Nope, not for me.

BookwormM Dump the coffee and make your own at home with a good book 🤣🤣 2mo
Zelma @BookwormM excellent point. Now to be fair, her main focus was on the fact that people who struggle as they age aren‘t alone and we need to change the culture of employment and aging as a whole. And she recommended leaning on relationships and the important things in life. But it was still just not for me. 2mo

Such a quiet and lovely book. I really enjoyed reading this series of linked short stories, savoring one per evening before bed. Some stories definitely works better than others, and I was surprised so many were from Olive‘s perspective; I thought she would always be a peripheral character. I will absolutely be reading more Elizabeth Strout in the future.

I can‘t see this working as a movie but that won‘t stop me from taking a photo still from it. Om, I loved this book so much. A short, quiet meditation on death and life and what‘s important. Each item that the narrator gives up for another day to live is tied somehow to his life beyond convenience and to his memories. This each day become more of reflection and trip through his life in his mind. Just beautiful.

I‘ve been in the mood for light rom-coms lately and this fit the bill perfectly. I know some readers have a problem with the deceit involved; however if you‘re ok with You‘ve Got Mail, this probably won‘t bug you. I like the use of text messages and email throughout . WhatThePuck @Zelma name/age/birthday are all long term memories. They're usually the last to go. They should ask her how old she is or who the president is or even what her jewelry is called. My grandma puts her watch on every day out of habit, but can't tell you what it is or what it's for. Yet you ask her the time and she'll show you her watch. She has a lovely neurologist who helped us with questions to give the nursing staff. 3mo
Dragon Hugs 🤗 3mo
Zelma @WhatThePuck what were one or two of the questions? I finally got them to listen when after another barrage of age/birthday/location questions, I asked her to tell them about her eyesight. She talked about all she could see and how it just came back two nights ago. She is blind (no light or anything). That convinced them I am not being hysterical. 3mo
Zelma @tpixie @Jas16 @irre @ravenlee @JennyM @Dragon thanks so much for the support. 8 agree, dementia is normal but what isn‘t normal is going from the level of forgetting what she had for lunch and what day it is to hallucinating people and talking to them and telling everyone she can see everything in the room (she‘s completely blind). Something happened when that changes in the course of one day. 3mo
tpixie also make sure that they check for urinary tract infection that can cause confusion as well as electrolyte imbalances not that she isn‘t suffering from dementia but that can cause quick changes in alertness 3mo

This book was so up my alley. Dark, creepy but not scary. A school for children who have disappeared to other worlds, returned against their will, and can‘t readjust. Loved the characters, stories of other lands and distinctions between them (Nonsense vs. Logic, etc). and that there was no love triangle or even major romance component. Plus an asexual character, not something I‘ve seen in YA before. No book pic so here‘s my snuggler this morning.

I just can‘t do it. 120 pages in and I cannot take the manic, ADD voice of the narrator any longer. At one point, he compares his train of thought and digressions to Russian nesting dolls, but only if there were infinite dolls. Exhausting. Zelma @TrishB @PurpleyPumpkin @Suet624 @JennyM @Reggie @CouronneDhiver thanks so much! I love you all and so miss my time here. I need to set aside some serious sit down time on Litsy this weekend. It just feels so wrong to hardly post and comment! But the good news Nd that positive life stuff is responsible. 😁 5mo

So much potential but ultimately I realized I was annoyed at picking it up after about 200 pages. I just didn‘t care enough to keep going. Loved the writing and the initial story. So, so interesting, but I felt like the beauty of the novel just devolved into a rush of “this happened, then this, and years passed.” The book just lost the intimacy and interest of the first half. However I‘m intrigued by this author and will definitely read her again.

AceOnRoam Same thing happened to me but I kept reading for a 2 star finish :( 5mo
Zelma @AceOnRoam ugh, that is really annoying. When I start groaning and make faces as I pick up a book, I know it‘s time to move on. Life is too short and I already finish enough mediocre books. 5mo
AceOnRoam I know, I know but I wanted to be able to discuss this come #TOB2019 in March. I really wanted to like it but Wash got on my nerves, and too many coincidence that moved the story along 😒 5mo

Zelma @AceOnRoam I typically only read a few ToB books every year, but this year had been a bad batch for me. Read 2 plus this one and haven‘t loved any. 5mo
AceOnRoam Oh what a pity. I DNF Zebra and Dictionary of Animal Languages. I have read 9, but you are right, not the books I have enjoyed most in 2018. It will be interesting to see what the judges say. Not long to wait now! I most enjoyed The Italian Teacher in terms of storytelling and There There for substance. The others have been somewhat too 'deep' for my little brain 🙃 5mo
Zelma @AceOnRoam I want to read There There before the commentary. Liked but didn‘t love My Sister the Serial Killer and The Mars Room. And that‘s it so far. 5mo
AceOnRoam There There is excellent but the ending is probably its weak spot. 5mo
Redwritinghood Yes, I totally agree. I felt like this devolved into a YA novel. 5mo
BarbaraBB @AceOnRoam @Zelma I didn‘t like this one much either. My favorites so far are The House of Broken Angels, Census and My Sister the Serial Killer. But I still need to read 7 more! 5mo
Cinfhen Oh no, I‘m 120 pages in and loving this book @AceOnRoam @Zelma @Redwritinghood @BarbaraBB @Kalalalatja I‘m gonna be pissed if this book takes a nosedive😝 5mo
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen It is okay, I went in with low expectations, it‘s just not really memorable in the end, imo 5mo
Zelma @Cinfhen you might still love it. The general consensus is positive. I am just a curmudgeonly reader. 5mo
Cinfhen I‘m in book 3 and still loving it!!! 5mo
Zelma @Cinfhen I am so glad. I was all in until after the Arctic. Then it just lost me. 5mo
Cinfhen Uh oh!! I just finished that section 😜😟🥺 5mo

Pickpick

I have mixed feelings on this one. A Pick but not an enthusiastic one. It was short and definitely kept my attention; I really wanted to find out how it would end. However, I hated all of the characters and wasn‘t a fan of the writing style (short, choppy chapters).

The Proposal | Jasmine Guillory

Bailedbailed

I‘ve tried and I just don‘t like Jasmine Guillory. I thought The Wedding Date was shallow and annoying. This was completely boring and all of the characters sounded the same; I couldn‘t tell who was speaking and frequently had to backtrack to figure it out. I like a fluffy romance but these just don‘t work for me. Just too bland, like the blandest Hallmark movie out there.

bio_chem06 I had The Wedding Date from the library and never opened it. I keep thinking I'll go back to it, but I'm not a big fan of books like that. It sounds like I wouldn't like it either. 5mo
Zelma @bio_chem06 it wasn‘t awful but the entire conflict could have been solved if the main characters had a conversation. 🙄 5mo
Purrfectpages Thank you! Everyone loves The Wedding Date and I just don‘t get it! Haven‘t tried this yet, but it‘s not high on my list. 5mo

Zelma @Purrfectpages I honestly wouldn‘t bother. I like The Wedding Date more than this one, so that should be pretty telling. 5mo
Reggie Yeah, I shouldn‘t have given the Wedding Date a Pick. But it was Christmas!!! The guy in there was soooo emotionally immature. Or just badly written. 5mo
Zelma @Reggie looking at my stats, I gave it it a Pick. I must have been feeling generous. And betting that my feelings have soured as more time has passed. 5mo

Two very different books in my current stack. Washington Black is quite good, but I am reading it so slowly that I wanted to add a light page turner to the mix. I have no chance of reading all of the Tournament of Books shortlist but this will make my third one.
