“Diane Lake‘s relatable search for a place to belong drew me in, and her unique insight into the family she found kept me engaged. I recommend this memoir to anyone interested in True Crime, especially that of one of the world‘s most notorious cults.“

Completed for the “something with an unlikeable character” category in the #nonfiction2019 challenge. I‘d planned to read a book about Trump for this box but I‘m sick to death of him so I decided I‘d rather read about Charles Manson. In any case—this book was ok. A bit slow and a slog in parts. But still better than Trump. ✌🏼
@Riveted_Reader_Melissa

I absolutely loved, loved, loved this book! As you know, I am a big true crime fanatic. What I loved about this book was how honest and raw Dianne was to talk about her story and time with the Family, Charlie‘s infamous cult. Luckily, she was not involved with the Tate/LaBianca murders but her testimony is what ultimately sealed his fate. This should be on everyone‘s shelves ❤️

Awesome read. It really delves deeply into the life of one of Charlie‘s girls and how he manipulated them into following him. Diane takes you into the counter culture scene and how the actions of others can push us to places we never thought we‘d go.

Sorry I‘ve been behind in my postings. Listening to this now. If you like the subject, you can get past her voice on the audio book. It really gives an inside look into how Charlie kept his “Family” in line and together.

I totally just binge listened to this book...12+ hours since yesterday. It is narrated by the author, which I first thought was going to be a detriment, but Dianne Lake‘s sincere recounting of her tragic childhood experiences as the youngest member of the Manson family quickly resonated with me. This is an extraordinary story, and Dianne‘s courage and resilience are stunning. One of my favorite non-fiction reads of 2018, if not all-time.

GondorGirl Added this to my library list for when I'm in a better mental state. It sounds right up my alley! 2y
Reviewsbylola Very well done, I agree! 2y
TheFunkyBookworm I LOVED this one!!! It was great to read in conjunction with Helter Skelter because it gave a human side to the members of the “family”. I recently heard Dianne Lake speak but unfortunately she was overpowered by her coauthor- who I was not wild about 😒 2y
Vertabrain @TheFunkyBookworm I just read Helter Skelter for the first time last month, but had never considered the other victims, like Dianne. It was interesting, but I thought I could distinguish the two distinct “voices” in the writing, but found myself gravitating to what seemed like Diane‘s authentic memories, in their simplicity. I have 14-year-old daughters and I can‘t even imagine how she was able to reclaim her life...She is an incredible human. 2y
TheFunkyBookworm @Vertabrain interesting- I didn‘t catch the 2 voices when I read it but I bet I would now! She‘s incredible and so genuine and earnest in her telling of her story. Really amazing! 2y

#GetMovin #Believer

"You break me down, you build me up, believer, believer..."

Another of my favorite non-fiction reads this year. I read Member of the Family back in March but keep thinking about it. This song and its lyrics make me think of Dianne Lake, who met Charles Manson when she was fourteen and spent two years being a believer while being manipulated, controlled and abused by him.

Vertabrain I was just wondering what to read next, and had forgotten all about this one. I read Helter Skelter for the first time last month, so the timing is perfect. Thanks for the reminder! 😉 2y

I haven‘t even gotten to the Manson part yet, but just reading about what the author‘s parents allowed and even encouraged makes me cringe. “I‘d come to the Family because I‘d wanted to belong, because I was looking for a place in the world. I was gradually drawn in until I couldn‘t see how lost I‘d become.”

Captivating! It starts by laying the groundwork of Lake‘s upbringing with drug-addled hippie parents who set her loose at age 14. Then, there‘s life with Charlie and the Family. She doesn‘t hold back about her participation in the cult or about helping send the guilty to prison.

Finished last night-my last book of March. Absorbing insider look at life with the Manson Family. Lake was just 14 when she was introduced to Charles Manson-the child of hippie parents who tuned in & out of society & their parental roles, she was ripe for Manson's manipulation. The details she provides about the group are fascinating & disturbing. More focus is on the group before the murders, so a good addition to books about the crimes & trials.

#MarchIntoOz #DontBelieveAnymore I'm only about a third of the way into this book by the youngest member of the Manson Family-who fell under Charles Manson's spell when she was just 14. At this point Diane has just met Manson & is entering the 'believer' stage but the disillusionment will begin to set in & she'll be saying I "don't believe anymore" when it comes to Manson & thinking she found the family she was searching for.

It‘s an incredible concept, totally impossible to fathom: that the person you‘re standing next to or having sex with is somehow related to God. It‘s preposterous, hard enough to say out loud, let alone to acknowledge that at one time I felt that way. But that‘s what it means to be in a cult: You lose a part of yourself to someone else or to a group, so that your entire mind no longer belongs to you.

Living without him may have been hard, but living with him had been harder.

*Reading about Dianne's childhood has been rough. So much of her experience echoes those of my friends and many of the kids I met through Washington state's juvenile justice system. You can't discount the effects a chaotic family member has on growing children, particularly if they're a parent.*

Helter Skelter has always been one of my favourite true crime books, a well-researched understanding of the Manson trial and the facts surrounding it. This account from former Manson Family member, Dianne Lake, is an incredible addition to the narrative. It‘s the inside voice that‘s been missing. If you plan to read one, I recommend reading both 🙌

I'm rather enjoying this one, though nothing beats Helter Skelter. I want to finish it up this weekend, though, since it's due the 31st, and I need to start Little Fires Everywhere, since we're starting a brand new book club at school and it's our inaugural book.

I not only met my goal, finally, but I surpassed it!!
I had to stop reading fan fiction in order to get back to reading books but let's see if I can do it again this year!

Pickpick

This book was fascinating & horrifying, and must have been tremendously painful for Lake to relive. I think she is in a unique position to share insights about the era, because her parents were hippies with a capital H, but more of the idealistic and myopic sort, while Manson represents the darkness of the counterculture. Lake has an intimate knowledge of both. I believe she is a victim, & have no qualms about reading or recommending her story.

A heart-wrenching and eye-opening glimpse into the psyche of a lost soul. Grateful that Dianne Lake was willing to share such an intimate story with us. 📖

I think these are my next 2 reads. I read Helter Skelter in high school and have had a sort of morbid fascination with the Manson Family ever since. Looking forward to reading a different perspective.

sammisho You is a great book! 2y
DeeLew @sammisho I've heard great things! 2y
EvieBee Can‘t wait to hear your thoughts on Member of the Family. Scored it as an ebook deal but I‘m a little scared to read it. I listened to Helter Skelter on a lone road trip through the southwest and it scared the pants off me. But still a little morbidly curious. (edited) 2y
tpixie I still need to read Helter Skelter. Hopefully in 2018!! 2y

I used to be a monogamous reader because I couldn‘t tear myself out of one world long enough to immerse myself in another book. Now, I can‘t keep to one book! I find it easier to read multiple books when I‘m switching between nonfiction, a fiction novel, and short stories though. I read Helter Skelter earlier this year, so I‘m looking forward to Member of the Family.

I was pleasantly surprised by how fresh Lake‘s perspective is. The first hundred or so pages are about her life growing up, especially after her parents decided to leave society and attempt to live in a bread truck. Her time with Manson included tons of details I didn‘t know or that hadn‘t previously been discussed at great length. Lake was with the family for two years before the murders, so she speaks a lot about how the family formed.

Reviewsbylola Definitely a worthwhile read @Cinfhen @amyg I recommend it! (edited) 2y
Cinfhen Yay! Thanks Steph ❣️great review🙌🏻 2y
AmyG Awesome! I may get this for my daughter for Hanukkah as she loves to read about the Manson family. I always gift one book to the kids. Then she can lend it to me! Thanks for the review! (edited) 2y

Kaye Did you hear, it sounds like Manson will soon have a one way ticket on that great big elevator in the sky. Something tells me his button is going down. Hope he brings some marshmallows. 2y

I‘m almost halfway through with this book about former Manson family member Dianne Lake. She changed her name and attempted to move on with her life after escaping the family at age 16. Having spent her formative years with two hippie parents that traveled from commune to commune in an old bread truck, Dianne had no one in her corner until she met Charlie at age 14. #historystickstoyourfeet #tuneintonovember

Robothugs Sounds like an interesting story! 2y
Cinfhen How different is her story than the one painted in Helter Skelter 2y
Reviewsbylola So far it‘s pretty different. The first 100+ pages are about Dianne‘s upbringing and her parent‘s attempts at leaving mainstream society. It‘s a very interesting look at the subculture of the 1960s. And it‘s also very easy to see how girls like Dianne ended up falling for Charlie‘s lifestyle. I definitely think it‘s a worthy read for anyone interested in that time. I‘ll let you know though once I finish. @Cinfhen 2y

A little light reading for our two hour bus ride to a band competition today.

BookishMarginalia Good luck! 2y
Kaye How‘s the book so far ? I have this one on reserve. @Aloisi_tribe 2y
Aloisi_tribe @Kaye Umm... I'm about a quarter of the way through it and I'm not sure if I'm going to continue it. It starts off talking about her childhood with her screwed up hippie parents and the wild stuff they let her do. It's pretty R rated in some spots. I haven't even gotten to the part where she meets the Manson family yet. 2y
