Year One
Year One | Nora Roberts
With one drop of blood, the old world is gone for ever. And in its place, something extraordinary begins... They call it The Doom - a deadly pandemic that starts on a cold New Year's Eve in the Scottish countryside. There's something mysterious about the virus and the way it spreads. As billions fall sick and die, some survivors find themselves invested with strange, unexpected abilities. Lana, a New York chef, has the power to move things and people with her will. Fred can summon light in the darkness. Jonah, a paramedic, sees snatches of the future in those he touches. Katie gives birth to twins, and suspects that she has brought fresh magic into the world, along with new life. But The Doom affects people differently. Along with the light, a dark and terrifying magic will also rise. As the remaining authorities round up the immune and the 'Uncannies' for testing, Lana, Katie and others flee New York in search of a safe haven. The old world is over, and Year One has begun.

I listened to the audio book and really enjoyed it! I think this book was just the set up to a larger grander story and I can't wait to read the next one.

I give this 3.5 stars. Suspenseful apocalyptic story about a virus taking out most of mankind and the plucky survivors, including angry INCEL types, robber gangs, people trying to build new communities, and the Uncanny (humans discovering the virus that didn't kill them somehow brought magic). The dialog is sometimes unnatural, and some things are not explained to my liking (like why do power plants still work).

So I just finished this book tonight. It was really good, although it took me quite a while to get through it. I loved it and can‘t wait to read the two next books of the trilogy 😊

"When Ross Macleod pulled the trigger and brought down the pheasant, he had no way of knowing he'd killed himself. And billions of others." Starting a novel about a plague while also reading a book about real world viruses, while living through a pandemic. Because apparently I like anxiety, as long as I can have peppermint hot chocolate and spicy popcorn.

vivastory I *almost* bought some Sriracha popcorn yesterday. 2y
LitStephanie @vivastory that sounds delicious. I tossed mine with nutritional yeast and spicy smoked paprika. 2y
vivastory I have paprika in my pantry. Might have to sprinkle a bit on a bowl later. Good call! 2y

Chelsea.Poole @vivastory sriracha popcorn does not seem like a bad idea. @litstephanie You‘re both inspiring me 🍿 2y
LeahBergen Ah, I thought this was togarashi spice on your popcorn; it‘s a favourite at my house. Have you tried it? How about you, @vivastory ? 2y
vivastory @LeahBergen I haven't tried it. I just googled it & I'm intrigued! Adding to my grocery list 2y
LitStephanie @LeahBergen I haven't even heard of it! How would you describe it? 2y
LeahBergen @LitStephanie It‘s a Japanese spice blend with a little bit of heat (not much), ginger, sesame, seaweed and citrus. It sounds bizarre but it‘s good! 😆 2y
Reggie Well if you have spicy popcorn and chocolate mint hot cocoa, why not? Lol this actually sounds good. 2y
LitStephanie @Reggie it worked somehow. 2y

This was my first Nora Roberts book. It was okay. I thought the plot was a bit stilted and found it a bit too romancy for me. In light of current events, though, reading about a pandemic was interesting. Depressing too.

ItsAnotherJen I loved this one! 2y
majkia @ItsAnotherJen glad you did. 2y
ReadingIsMyHobby The reason it took me so long to get through it was because of the pandemic. I definitely agree with it being depressing. Was really hard to read in a time like this. 2y

📚📚📚 for this book. Written in 2016, it starts with a mysterious plague that wipes out nearly half the worlds population overnight but something Uncanny also happens and humans start to develop magical abilities - some good and other not. Follows a couple small groups with one main lead by the end. Simple writing easy to read, characters slightly one dimensional plot has potential.

What‘s a series you really really want to finish this year. For me it‘s the year one trilogy from Nora roberts. I including the awakening because I believe it ties into the trilogy somehow. This is one of my favorites trilogies but I‘ve only finished book one and two. So I‘m really hoping I can finish book three sometime this year.

Jess861 I'm hoping to get through Mistborn. I really enjoyed the first book. 3y

Nora Roberts does pandemic fiction!

Of course with this being Nora Roberts it is not a straightforward pandemic, sure we have the “plague “ that wipes people out but then we also have the uncanny people with special abilities for dark or light.

Nora Roberts does evil so well and the in the next sentence good triumphs again. Oh and don‘t forget the romance even at the end of the world there is time 4 love

Interested to see where the series goes.

First one of the year done! Well I started it last year and finished it today. I like apocalyptic stories and even though the beginning of this hit a little too close too home after this year, I really enjoyed it. The supernatural part was a little surprised but it added something different to the story. I am on to the 2nd one! #audiobook #scribd #apocalyptic

Read this during the shut down back in March. It had very ‘this could be tomorrow‘ vibes. Except for the magic part. But then again, who knows...?

“They returned the rental car, infecting the clerk and the businessman who rented it next. They infected the porter who took their bags when tips exchanged hands. By the time they reached and passed through security, the infection had passed to an easy dozen people. “

I will be honest, I don't research books before I read them. Sometimes I don't even read the back. I ONE HUNDRED PERCENT judge by the cover. So I didn't expect the immediate hit from this book. About a pandemic. That spreads internationally with a high death toll... Too soon? Might be too soon. #booknerdreads

My mom loaned me this book and it‘s the first Nora Roberts book I‘ve read. There‘s a pandemic component which I thought might be too much to read about and be living through, but the book takes such a different turn with fantasy and magic that it didn‘t bother me. It was a quick read and I‘ll be reading the next two in the series.

The first pages of this book read as if it had been recently written. It really shows how much we have not learned from our past. It shows the ugly that can happen if people do not learn how to come together. It shows the stupid things people do when they are afraid especially when they are afraid of someone different from them. But it also shows the good, the love, the laughter, the connections that can be made when people come together.

This one was a page turner! It's the first in a trilogy. It has a lot of typical tropes of the post-apocalyptic fantasy genre but it's suspenseful and I liked all of the characters. The second book is just as good, and I'm reading the third now!
