Year One | Nora Roberts
With one drop of blood, the old world is gone for ever. And in its place, something extraordinary begins... They call it The Doom - a deadly pandemic that starts on a cold New Year's Eve in the Scottish countryside. There's something mysterious about the virus and the way it spreads. As billions fall sick and die, some survivors find themselves invested with strange, unexpected abilities. Lana, a New York chef, has the power to move things and people with her will. Fred can summon light in the darkness. Jonah, a paramedic, sees snatches of the future in those he touches. Katie gives birth to twins, and suspects that she has brought fresh magic into the world, along with new life. But The Doom affects people differently. Along with the light, a dark and terrifying magic will also rise. As the remaining authorities round up the immune and the 'Uncannies' for testing, Lana, Katie and others flee New York in search of a safe haven. The old world is over, and Year One has begun.

I'm not sure how to feel about the fact that all my books on hold (paper and digital) came in at once! I've been to the library every day this week, which is great; but I cant help feeling a bit overwhelmed by the task before me.
I did get to pick up my tote today for completing 3 books on the reading challenge. Last year I completed 17, I hope I can complete more this time!

This was my first ever Nora Roberts book, and I was not disappointed! At this point I have pretty much tired of traditional dystopian stories, but the biological/infectious basis of this story drew me in and I enjoyed it so much as someone who loves medicine and science. I enjoyed the perspectives given from different characters. Descriptions were vivid and I had great pictures of what was happening in my mind! I am looking forward to the sequel!

Have you ever gotten so used to an author's writing, it's easy to anticipate what's coming next? Nora Roberts has always been my go to romance/easy reading author. Every trilogy starts out with three men and three women. We all know how it ends. NOT THIS ONE! I am so pleasantly surprised. I couldn't put this book down. It has everything; Witches, fairies, seers, prophets, oh and the apocalypse!? I am so excited to read book 2 📚📚
Happy Reading!

Bookworm_45 That book sounds amazing! 3mo
MrsBibliophile I loved it! I can't WAIT to read the second and the third. If you're into to fantasy/sci-fi check out The Bone Witch by Rin Chupeco. I couldn't put them down. 3mo

This was between a pick and a so-so for me, and I'm still sorting out how I feel about it.

Imagine that there's a pandemic of such epic proportions that more than half the world population dies, and rapidly. At the same time, some people experience a strengthening of magic powers. What would the world look like? And what would happen if that first generation were to give birth to a child of magical prophecy?

Suet624 Is this the Nora Roberts who writes romance novels? 3mo
ScientistSam @Suet624 it is. It's a very different genre from most of her books, though she does have a few romances with magic in them. This is definitely not a romance! 3mo
Slajaunie I‘m going to have to read this one. As a teenager and young adult I loved romance and this was one of my favorite authors. I have not read one of her books in years. This one sounds right up my ally though. 3mo
ScientistSam @Slajaunie I'd love to know what you think! It's definitely not her typical genre😀 3mo

I cannot describe how much I disliked this book, which is dissapointing as I have only read two of her trilogies (the Circle trilogy & the Gallaghers trilogy) & I really enjoyed them.
The childish devision between 'good' & 'evil' characters. Fairies already conveniently named stuff like 'Rainbow' & the baddies cackling like a house fell on their sister. The names for everything are terrible & I found it strange that only straight people survived.

I‘ve read Nora Roberts before but this was very different from what I‘m accustomed to. The first book in a dystopian trilogy that combines dark and gritty with elements of romance and fantasy; a somewhat odd combination that surprisingly worked well. I was pleasantly surprised... another series I‘ve managed to be dragged into

OMG .. this book! I went into it looking for a romance and found a dystopian fantasy.

Nora Roberts challenged herself and succeeded with this amazing story; of loss/grief/tragedy/rebirth/love.

Lana overcomes so much in this amazing book, but keeps on going. I can't wait to grab book 2!!

Look at these endpapers! 🤗 🤗 🤗

This is Stephen King‘s The Stand meets ... well Nora Roberts. Nonetheless, while those are two vastly different levels of fantasticry, I enjoyed this lighter mashmallow fluffy way (and way more approachable 400 page) take on Stu Redman (let‘s call her Lana) meets The Walking Dead (let‘s call them Warrior Purity).

This marks book 4 of my #24B42019 challenge!

I almost stopped this book as it is quite dark and really graphic in some places. The characters were really interesting so I kept going. I enjoyed the book much more during the second half. I will most likely read the next book the the series. I feel that this book was a real blend of Nora's darker J.D. Robb writing style with her more typical romantic trilogy. I do enjoy the supernatural elements of the book.

This sat for a bit on my tbr pile. Once I picked it up, I couldn‘t put it down. The book follows a group of survivors, those who didn‘t succumb to “the doom”. There‘s the light group, the dark group. Faries. Witches. And the guy next door. Nora Roberts handles the multiple characters well, although it is easy to determine who lives to see another installment of the trilogy.

I never read Nora Roberts before, but when I saw this post-apocalyptic dystopian story as an Audible deal, I decided to give it a shot.
