Outlander | Diana Gabaldon
Claire Randall is leading a double life. She has a husband in one century, and a lover in another...In 1945, Claire Randall, a former combat nurse, is back from the war and reunited with her husband on a second honeymoonwhen she innocently touches a boulder in one of the ancient stone circles that dot the British Isles. Suddenly she is a Sassenachan "outlander"in a Scotland torn by war and raiding border clans in the year of our Lord...1743.Hurled back in time by forces she cannot understand, Claire's destiny in soon inextricably intertwined with Clan MacKenzie and the forbidden Castle Leoch. She is catapulted without warning into the intrigues of lairds and spies that may threaten her life ...and shatter her heart. For here, James Fraser, a gallant young Scots warrior, shows her a passion so fierce and a love so absolute that Claire becomes a woman torn between fidelity and desire...and between two vastly different men in two irreconcilable lives. From the Trade Paperback edition.

After binge-watching the series on Netflix, I realized that a re-read of this series would be a good way to kick off 2022. My copy is an odd-ball, but I love it. Wherever I found it, it got me into this world. The rest are waiting to be savored as I progress. #bookworm #reread #outlander #romance #timetravel #epicstorytelling 🥰❤️📚

sprainedbrain Oh this is a fun old cover! ❤️ 7d
keys_on_fire I had this one once too! It‘s what got me into the series. I was working at GNC and would have 8 customers in as many hours. I literally picked the thickest book that looked interesting, and found one of my fav series from that random pick! 5d

This is really hard to say! I read mostly fantasy so if someone isn't interested in that I'm kind of at a loss, but here are some I know I tell people to read.

📚 The Killer of Little Shepherds
📚 Outlander
📚 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
📚 anything by Neil Gaiman
📚 anything by Jacqueline Carey
📚 Harry Potter
📚 Chronicles of Narnia
📚 The Newsflesh Trilogy

tokorowilliamwallace I had a college friend I reconnected with for the first time in probably almost 10 years recommend Outlander to me, so I bought two volumes of the saga and will get into it eventually (probably not exactly in order 😬)! I'm intrigued not only in how she characterizes her smut, but also mostly in how she handles the historical context and detail in writing so thoroughly. She also rec'd Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth saga, which I have begun. 1w
TheatreSpaz Gabaldon's historical research SEEMS to be pretty spot on. I live near one of the settings in her books and it's so fun to connect state historical sites to her stories. My favorite part of the books, though, is the medical treatment Claire dispenses in the 18th c with her 20th c knowledge. It's fascinating reading about how she makes do without antibiotics and other modern pharmaceuticals. 1w

We got a good ol‘ snowstorm today, so I‘ve settled in with a warm (decaf) coffee, a fuzzy blanket, and the first book in my #Outlander2022 read. ☕️

A friend of mine gave me books 2-5 last year, so my goal is to read one a month in 2022 to catch up on the series. I‘m only to chapter 3 and I‘m already obsessed with Gabaldon‘s writing. 🥰

"Outlander" is extremely well written and the author tells her story well. However, there were parts of the story that I felt unneeded and while I understand some of the commentary was to show the times, I felt Gabaldon was toeing a line I did not care for.

1. Sometimes, but usually can‘t guess all the twists
2. Outlander, both book and 📺 series!
3. I do seem drawn to the found family trope, and anti-hero tropes. I hate the love triangle trope and avoid it as much as possible!
4. I‘m grateful for all the cuddles and time I get to spend with our older cat #Isabel. Her health has declined a lot this year, and I view every day with her as a gift.

I read the series a couple of years ago and got sick of all the new names/characters. So I started talking notes and even before finishing the series, I knew I'd need to read it again. So here I am rereading and taking notes. I bought this box to use as a bibliography before goodreads existed. The first cards are books I still need to add to my READ list. The ABC section is all #Outlander notes. Does anyone else do this?

eeclayton I did with Doctor Zhivago! There were so many names. 5mo
mandarchy @eeclayton that's good to know! On my list of reasons I wish I could add notes to my TBR list on goodreads: who recommended the book to me and so and so said get ready to take notes. 5mo
Curiouser_and_curiouser @eeclayton @mandarchy How should one take notes on characters in a book? I use a notebook but I find if I leave space for a character that may need plenty of room I don't end up filling in the space, then I run out of space for a character who needs more. I guess removable pages might work best. Other than a file deck like this one, what other suggestions would you have for taking notes simply and easily, no matter how long or short the notes are? 5mo
See All 9 Comments
mandarchy @Curiouser_and_curiouser that's a good question. It depends on the book. For a stand alone, I might use a page in my journal and list characters in chronological order (when they appear in the story). Sometimes I fold a single sheet of paper and it's a bookmark, too. But with a series this size, file cards are the way to go. 5mo
eeclayton @mandarchy @Curiouser_and_curiouser For Zhivago I used single sheets (ended up using 3) and added the name whenever a new character appeared together with some basic info, like age, occupation, who they were related to, and which chapter I first met them in. This was no more than 2 lines for each person, and I hardly ever added to them, I just needed the quick reminder when the character reappeared. 5mo
Curiouser_and_curiouser @eeclayton oh wonderful. Yes, I probably need to do something like that. I also end up writing too much, but the details you've mentioned sound perfect. I will give that a go next time. Thanks you again 🌻 5mo
Curiouser_and_curiouser @mandarchy that sounds great! Thank you for your time in explaining this technique. I may not staple them but perhaps keep the pages together another way, incase I'd like to add something further down the track. But yes, this idea has opened up all sorts of options in my mind. The older I get the narrower my mind becomes! I must give it a workout to help me think more laterally as I age 😊 5mo
Curiouser_and_curiouser @mandarchy oh yeah, I plan to read the Outlander collection in the near future, so I'll need to plan ahead and get myself some sort of filing system like you've done. Thanks again! 5mo
mandarchy @Curiouser_and_curiouser After I started taking notes, I found out that everything is online - I reinvented the wheel and decided to keep building it anyway. I think note taking is a great reader skill. Some of us need to take more notes than others. Have fun! 5mo

I love the story but the audio is dragging me down: dirty noise floor, booth noise, someone coughing in the background in chapter 17; not crazy about the episodic delivery, male character voices or, even of Claire herself.

I‘m bailing on the audio and, when I next have the urge to visit Jamie & Claire, it will back to my print copy.

Emily92Bibliophile Good to know! I‘m very picky about my audiobook recordings and the readers voices- sad I won‘t be able to read it over audiobook and I‘ll just have to wait until after graduating from grad school to start this series 😭 8mo

I first read this when it came out 30 (!) yrs ago & revisit it every 5 or 6 yrs. This yr will be my first re-read in audio though! Davina Porter narrates this time-traveling historical romance set in 1740s Scotland.

But DP sounds a bit brittle to me & I‘m not liking Claire as much this time ‘round; but I‘m sticking w/this to the end! Either the recording will have grown on me or I might honestly have to ask myself if I‘ve outgrown Outlander!

Texreader Love this review!! 😂😂 it‘s been some years but your review definitely made me recall some details! 9mo
OrangeMooseReads @Texreader LOL there are some unforgettable scenes 9mo

CaffeineAndCandy @bibliobliss I got the chocolate peanut butter powder from Walmart. I put chocolate syrup, ice and water or milk then blend it up! It‘s so good 😊 9mo
CaffeineAndCandy @SeaToSkyes it was $10 at Walmart. It works pretty good. It‘s just a single serve size. 9mo
CaffeineAndCandy @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm i love it. I feel like a drug addict going back and back to make more smoothies. 9mo

Pickpick

I found the show first and the book second but haven‘t been disappointed with either. Jamie and Claire connection is cosmic and otherworldly. It sucks me in and gives me all the feels. Book Jamie is so much dreamier than tv show Jamie.

April Book 22/25 #LitsyLove

OrangeMooseReads I just started this Monday or Tuesday. It does suck you in. 9mo
CoverToCoverGirl I agree with your assessment of Jamie. It might be an unpopular opinion but he is not the Jamie I envisioned. 9mo
BayouGirl85 @CoverToCoverGirl I am ok with the casting of TV Jamie. I think it‘s just hard to get everything from book Jamie across the screen. This is my second read and I get all the feels still. 9mo

Started this yesterday. I didn‘t listen while at work because I could barely stay awake (so tired lately). I listened to and from, it‘s good so far. I feel like there is a lot of extra unnecessary in it. We will see how it goes.

CoverToCoverGirl Davina is a most excellent narrator. 9mo
OrangeMooseReads @CoverToCoverGirl she is very good 😁 9mo
