The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August
The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August | Claire North
SOME STORIES CANNOT BE TOLD IN JUST ONE LIFETIME.Harry August is on his deathbed. Again. No matter what he does or the decisions he makes, when death comes, Harry always returns to where he began, a child with all the knowledge of a life he has already lived a dozen times before. Nothing ever changes. Until now. As Harry nears the end of his eleventh life, a little girl appears at his bedside. "I nearly missed you, Doctor August," she says. "I need to send a message."This is the story of what Harry does next, and what he did before, and how he tries to save a past he cannot change and a future he cannot allow.

I really liked the concept of this. It blended historical fiction and the idea of reincarnation well. The problem I had with it was that it was a bit slow in parts and wordy. Overall, I think it‘s really worthwhile to read, because it is so different. I just found parts of it to be a little bit boring.

thegirlwiththelibrarybag Some of the science-y bits went over my head - but I loved it overall. Very different, I agree. 1mo
Davor I DNF'd it few years ago because I found it a bit slow for my taste, even though I loved the idea behind it. Maybe I should give it another chance 🤔 1mo

First book done for #24b4Monday. For a while I thought I would dnf this meandering mixed up time journey. Thankfully the pacing finally picked up the last 25%. It was just Ok. The timelines are distracting and there are whole passages that seem pointless. The main plot is interesting enough for me to give this a so-so.

I just finished this book and I am NOT ok. I don't want to leave this world! The book was action packed with a lot of unexpected plot twists. It was a quick read. It was profound and thought provoking. Harry August broke my heart fifteen times! I highly recommend it. There is a special and permanent spot on my shelf for this book. Definitely one of the top ten books I've had the pleasure of reading!

Claire North has written a thought provoking sci-fi book. Harry is faced with a dilemma of what he should do when he receives some startling news.

If you could relive your own life over and over, what would you change, not only in your life, but to make the world a better place?

I liked the love/hate relationship between Harry and Vincent. Each had plans for the world, but they also kept becoming intertwined in each other's multiple lives.

#musicalnewyear #timewarp having spent much of the morning trying to find a book that made me think of the actual lyrics I am opting for a title inspired choice. Mmm... this was so-so. A really big idea, executed alright. But I think it took me too long to root for Harry. And for someone with 15 lives, too long takes on new meaning.

But I‘m intrigued by this last page. At first blush, my advice to my past self would be:
Don‘t be afraid of being a hack.
Don‘t be afraid of success.
And kiss that guy when you think the time is right - it is 💋

What‘s yours?

I was expecting lush literary fiction like Kate Atkinson‘s Life After Life, because both books have the same premise: Some people relive their lives on loop and retain their memories, making new choices each go around.

This book leans harder into speculative fiction though, really digging in to how a society of “Ouroborans” might work. It made for a cracking thriller with a fascinating and complex frenemy relationship at its heart.

saresmoore I had the same thought about this in relation to Life After Life, but found it to be completely different. I enjoyed both, though! 10mo

This book is good; damn good! First Fifteen weaves an intricate tale of vengeance that never ever really lets up! The protagonist and antagonist are worthy of their epic time tumbling conflict, and North‘s writing, descriptive enough with all necessary details, stays cohesive and keeps the plot taut. I only hope the people making this film don‘t ruin this near perfect Sci-fi read!

Squidapus
post image
Mehso-so

Squidapus had complicated feelings about this book. A story about a man who lives the same life over and over abd remembers all of them, striving to prevent a future he dreads seeing come to pass. The idea, plot and even the eventual brilliant twist of the ending are all subsumed under incredibly droll language that drags on and on. Most conversations could have been half as long and many events are just repeatedly driving the same point home.

ButtBarn There are some really slow points but overall I felt like the good outweighed the bad. However, your rating is really fair because I remember a lot of fluff in the middle of the book as well. 11mo
Squidapus @ButtBarn That's sorta why Squidapus wasn't sure what to grade it. There was an incredible lot of good in this book, very specifically the concept and execution of both his and the antagonist's plans. But there were just some hitches that Squidapus couldn't get over completely. Still recommended honestly! 11mo
TobeyTheScavengerMonk I finished this today on audio, and while I really enjoyed it I often found myself thinking “I bet if I was reading this I would have totally stalled out about now”. 10mo

Wow! Amazing, creative, original story. Fast-paced, thrilling, inventive, surprising.
Harry August gets to live over and over, but always born in 1919. He finds others of his kind; some are helpful, others are misguided, and their deeds will end the world.
This is such an unusual book. Very intelligent and unpredictable. Recommended!

Finally finished it. Very different to anything I've read so far. Harry August is an intriguing character, with wit and a great sense of humour. So many twists and turns led me never to know what was around the corner, making this a refreshing read. Got a little slow in places, but overall an excellent read, with a fascinating concept about time, and the lengths people go through to understand who they are.

When Harry August dies, he keeps coming back to the same place. He is born again but with the memories of each life he has lived before.

Harry August is reborn again and again, each life is the same, each life is different.

This was an intriguing read. I really like Harry, he has a dry sense of humour and seems cynical in an amusing way. There were some truly great one liners. Bits were a little dry and I struggled with the concept of multiple people having multiple lives, and how that worked but I can over look it. In summary - an interesting read.
