Snuff | Terry Pratchett
For nearly three decades, Terry Pratchett has enthralled millions of fans worldwide with his irreverent, wonderfully funny satires set in the fabulously imaginative Discworld, a universe remarkably similar to our own. From sports to religion, politics to education, science to capitalism, and everything in between, Pratchett has skewered sacred cows with both laughter and wisdom, and exposed our warts, foibles, and eccentricities in a unique, entertaining, and ultimately serious way.At long last, Lady Sybil has lured her husband, Sam Vimes, on a well-deserved holiday away from the crime and grime of Ankh-Morpork. But for the commander of the City Watch, a vacation in the country is anything but relaxing. The balls, the teas, the mucknot to mention all that fresh air and birdsongare more than a bit taxing on a cynical city-born and -bred copper.Yet a policeman will find a crime anywhere if he decides to look hard enough, and its not long before a body is discovered, and Samout of his jurisdiction, out of his element, and out of bacon sandwiches (thanks to his well-meaning wife)must rely on his instincts, guile, and street smarts to see justice done. As he sets off on the chase, though, he must remember to watch where he steps. . . . This is the countryside, after all, and the streets most definitely are not paved with gold.Hailed as the purely funniest English writer since Wodehouse (Washington Post Book World), with a satirists instinct for the absurd and a cartoonists eye for the telling detail (Daily Telegraph, London), Terry Pratchett offers a novel of crime, class, prejudice, and punishment that shows this master at his dazzling best.

Reread confirms it. Still my favourite book. The one that got me out of a decade long reading slump two years ago, before I'd read any other Discworld books. Having now read all of them, and reread all the City Watch books, I'm overjoyed that it lives up to my memory. 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? Vimes remains a character who you regularly see thoughtfully consider the challenge to his own assumptions and then do better as a result. Pratchett's writing in his voice is fully developed.

While Thud! does a lot for Vimes, this is the only book that really moves from including Vimes as the head of an ensemble in the City Watch, to being primarily his story with a new supporting cast.
4mo
Robotswithpersonality 3/? Reading this book is always bittersweet because I wonder what other adventures we could have had with this character if Terry had had more time. I dearly wish, he had had more time.

Regarding the supporting cast, I also wish we got other books with Willikins the bad ass butler!
4mo
Robotswithpersonality 4/? Pragmatic hope, the reality that humans are flawed with the open possibility that they can surprise you in a good way; it feels like the essence of watching Vimes discover new things about the world he thought he knew, and I love it. 4mo
Robotswithpersonality 5/5 It's not without its flaws:
Puns around Feeney 's meals and fighting style are as wince worthy as they were the last time I read it.
If the goblins and their denigration and enslavement are a metaphor for the history of racism then Vimes comes dangerously close to a white saviour figure. However if the lesson has to do with animal rights, he doesn't. I think it's up to interpretation.

⚠️speciesism/racism, enslavement

Sam Vimes proves that he is unable to detach from his work by solving crimes on vacation at his wife's ancestral country house. His growth as a character is really on full display here as he argues for goblins to be considered human.

With this read, I've achieved my goal of reading all the Night Watch Discworld books this year! Prachett fans - which arc should I read next? The wizards? The witches?

Did I mention that I don't like the new German covers? At least the story stays the same and that's what matters most.

This one dragged a bit and felt a tiny bit too long, but I still enjoyed the book. How could one not love how Sir Terry addresses racism? In such a lovely way. Only Terry Pratchett can make a feel good story out of this topic. And add something cute and innocent right next to violence and darkness.

Parts if this novel are marvelous, parts of it are a slog, and parts of it leave a very bad taste in my mouth. I think the Vetinari speech at the end is a very sour note! And this is also the last Vimes book and, well, I wish it had come together better.

Commander Sam Vimes‘s family vacation is interrupted by a brawl, a murder, drug trafficking, slavery, an examination of complicity in the face of atrocities, and the question of what makes a person and who should be protected by the law.

An intense read, with a bit of a slow start. Sam Vimes is in my top five favorite characters. Ever. His growth, his gruff compassion, his ability to look at himself and do better, just *chef‘s kiss*. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

Soubhiville I love Pratchett‘s way of humanizing all of his races. Getting to know the goblins better was touching. I also got a kick out of his glee of the gross. Between the goblins and their snot pots and Young Sam and his poo obsession, not to mention how awful he always describes the river as being. 2y
Soubhiville One of my favorite quotes (this is from memory, definitely not word for word) is about the countryside being nothing but trees, which are just tall weeds with really thick stems. 😆 2y

Soubhiville Do we think Nobbs has found love at the end of this one? I felt like he maybe has! 2y
BookmarkTavern I love Sybil so much! ❤️ Her no nonsense support of Vimes, what she accomplished at the end with Tears of the Mushroom. And while I was listening, I had to stop to dig out my physical copy so I could highlight so many lines, including the quote “Goodness is about what you do. Not who you pray to.” 2y
khooliha @Soubhiville I think Nobby has and, honestly, I'm thrilled for him! He has been the biggest surprise of this reread - I really do love Nobby, who seems to have more going on than any character gives him credit for. 2y
khooliha Hey, why is this book titled Snuff? I still do not get it. 2y
khooliha I wish that this book had taken place more in the city, for the sake of the theme of assimilation (which it totally drops at like the 60% point), and I -really- wish we had seen more of Colon's state from his own point of view, but that's because that's the sort of storyline I LOVE. 2y
khooliha I really hate that this is the second Watch book in a row where the 'solution' to a revolutionary is to make them a cop! Justice for Reg and Jethro! 2y
khooliha Oh, also, I found the human villain (Stratford?) a very frustrating device - he's Bad and Dangerous, terribly so, but also our leads pretty much always have the jump on him, rendering him not much more than bad intentions. He also isn't enough of a foil to work as a metaphorical evil, I don't think. And it took over half the book to introduce him! He's a weak link, to me. 2y

Vimes is forced very reluctantly by Lady Sybil to take a vacation. They go to her family‘s old manor in the countryside, which is full of trees, which according to Sam are just tall weeds with strong stems. 🤣

A lot of this one is about the plight of goblins, who at the beginning of the book are considered vermin and have no rights. I love Pratchett‘s way of showing the evolution of thoughts of one character then all of Anhk. Loved of course!

Okay, like, at the end of this fight with the blacksmith who hates the rich? When Vimes tries to be like "listen, I'm a normal dude" and then the blacksmith gets threatened by the existence of all his powerful connections? Like, is this book going to connect the dots? I don't remember. This is frustrating.

Crystal Slam
One of the most dangerous drugs available to trolls, crystal slam is first mentioned in Snuff. It looks like stone dust, but appears to have little red and blue flecks in it when held to the light. Its manufacture is very difficult, partly because of the unmistakable smell and sparks produced when boiling it.

Thank you, #Littens for sharing your quotes for #QuotsyNov18! I loved seeing your posts all month 😊 I hope you'll join me again in December!

LiterRohde Glad I came back to it after a few months away! I tried this past month to use quotes related to the prompt but without the word directly in the quote. Quite fun and challenging. Though I‘m not sure if the connections were always followable. But that‘s probably because I worry too much about what other people think. (edited) 5y
LiterRohde Also, I just got the first Discworld novel. Have not yet read it. Had to see what all the hype was about. 5y

See All 7 Comments
TK-421 @LiterRohde Are you starting with The Colour of Magic? I ask because many Discworld fans agree it's not the best place to start because it just is as good as the other books. IMO, a great starting point is Guards! Guards! but I'm biased. Here's a great reading order guide: https://www.lspace.org/books/reading-order-guides/the-discworld-reading-order-gu... It doesn't include later books, but it's a good starting point. 5y
LiterRohde Yup. Colour of Magic. Got it free with Amazon Prime. I didn‘t know this series was to be read out of order. 5y
TK-421 @LiterRohde It isn't meant to be, but if one judges the whole series by the 1st book, one might wonder what the fuss is about. I'm biased because I didn't enjoy the Rincewind novels as much as say, The Watch, or the Witches. But of course everyone is different & this is just my 2¢! I love Discworld & would hate to see a reader discard the series if they don't enjoy the 1st book! That's why I like to let new readers know there are several threads 5y
LiterRohde Excellent! I will keep that in mind and keep an open mind. 5y
