New York 2140
New York 2140 | Kim Stanley Robinson
A new vision of the future from Kim Stanley Robinson, the New York Times bestselling author of science fiction masterworks such as the Mars trilogy, 2312, and Aurora. The waters rose, submerging New York City. But the residents adapted and it remained the bustling, vibrant metropolis it had always been. Though changed forever. Every street became a canal. Every skyscraper an island. Through the eyes of the varied inhabitants of one building Kim Stanley Robinson shows us how one of our great cities will change with the rising tides. And how we too will change.

This 600+ page novel takes place in a future where sea level rise has submerged lower Manhattan, squatters dwell among the moldering ruins, and the wealthy own vacant apartments in impossibly high skyscrapers. A lot happens, but the pleasure of this book lies in the detailed world building, the vivid cast of characters, and the possibility of real, meaningful change. Somehow my least depressing climate change read so far!

(2017) It's a chunkster of ensemble fiction, following residents of the Met Life building in a future where lower Manhattan has flooded, becoming a sort of Eastern US version of Venice. Mixed feelings: I loved the setting, the ideas, and the way the disparate plot threads tied together. But the prose is frequently polemic, the characters relationships are not always well motivated, and the ending is excessively optimistic.

RamsFan1963 I love the premise of this book, but I know from past experiences with the author, I will end up bailing because it won't hold my interest. 10mo
swynn @RamsFan1963 I know what you mean -- I've tried Red Mars a couple of times, and Antarctica, but this is the first I've finished by Robinson. I liked this well enough that I'd try something else, but my reading history with him is also spotty. 10mo

It wasn't a bad book, by any means, but it was bloated with meandering side plots that didn't benefit the story, half baked characters and unnecessary and clunky chapters by 'the citizen' which I'm guessing was meant to provide context or something? To me it just broke the flow of the story.

Reggie Ughhh this guy has good ideas for the future but doesn‘t know how to integrate them into a seamless fiction. I read one of his books back in December and was so frustrated by the lack of execution regarding its potential. Ughhhhhh KsR!!!! 3y

Forgot to post this last night...oops! I didn‘t like the tagged book but it got me thinking about climate change. #thankfulthursday

1. My mom had a name picked out for me (Bridget) but late in her pregnancy, she met a good friend of my grandmother‘s named Cynthia, and she thought it was a pretty name and went with that instead. I wish she had stuck with her original choice! 😂
2. That my family is still healthy and for The Golden Girls on Hulu!

SilversReviews I am named after my paternal grandmother. I am thankful my entire family is safe and healthy. (edited) 3y
Cosmos_Moon I love the name Cynthia... a friend of mine named her daughter Cynthea and they call her Thea. I thought that was interesting and I love the variation. 🙌 for Golden Girls 🥰 3y

I took almost no pictures on today‘s 6.5-mile #audiowalk. Here‘s a slough that‘s more or less parallel to the sugar beer sculptures, but on a different path.

My attitude towards NEW YORK 2140 had officially shifted from, “This is interesting and I really like it,” to, “This is so cool! I love it!” Many Littens tried it as cli-fi for Booked, but I think it‘s as much econopunk as anything. Lots of discussion & reimagining of economics.

TobeyTheScavengerMonk Maybe check out Kim Stanley Robinson‘s 2312. It was sort of this book but with an even-bigger-to-the-point-of-being-overwhelming scope. 4y
xicanti @TobeyTheScavengerMonk it‘s on my list. I‘m (very casually) working my way through all the Hugo winners and nominees from down through the years. 4y

I saw about a million deer on tonight‘s #audiowalk. (Or I saw ten deer. Whichever.) A couple of them came pretty close to me.

The deeper I get into NEW YORK 2140, the more I enjoy it. Yeah, it‘s probably overlong, but I like how Robinson layers his many characters‘ stories. I‘m getting a big kick out of the semi-fictionalized New York history segments, too.

I saw some public art on tonight‘s #audiowalk. I assume these are supposed to be heirloom carrots?

I‘m halfway through NEW YORK 2140 now and I‘m still enjoying it, though I think there‘s a pretty good chance I‘ll find it overlong in the end. I can live with that.

UwannaPublishme 🤔🥕 4y
xicanti @UwannaPublishme I looked them up in my city‘s public art index and apparently they‘re sugar beets meant to call attention to Japanese-Canadian history, with an emphasis on internment. I can see them as sugar beets now, but I wouldn‘t have gotten internment without the guide. 4y
UwannaPublishme I kept looking at your photo in astonishment of what you can see on a daily stroll! They almost looked like beehives at first, then I saw the carrot. So thanks for the fascinating trivia. What fun! I love beets, but never had yellow ones. 4y

I saw a muskrat on my #audiowalk! At first glance I thought it was a very small beaver, which would‘ve been a new one for around here.

NEW YORK 2140 has a terrible Litsy rating, but I‘m enjoying it so far. It‘s got an interesting variety of perspectives and all the performers are great. I‘m eager to see how it develops.

RamsFan1963 Robinson's books annoy me. I am intrigued with the premises he comes up with, but I'm always disappointed with the results. I haven't tried to read this one but I did bail on Red Moon, the last of his books I tried. 4y
xicanti @RamsFan1963 this is the first of his books I‘ve tried. I‘m very casually working my way through all the Hugo winners & nominees, though, so I‘m sure I‘ll encounter him again. 4y
Lindy Coincidentally, I just recommended one of Kim Stanley Robinson‘s earlier novels during my zoom bookclub this evening: 4y

I started reading this last night and DNF at 3%. The first chapter is very....preachy. And the dialogue is bad. It felt like an in person rambling conversation. Then I saw its 624 pages. I‘m not reading this type of dialogue for that many pages. The concept for this is super interesting and I want to read more in the Cli-Fi genre but this isn‘t it. #CliFi #DNF

Oh man. I think I just picked the wrong book for this prompt for #booked2019. It was so slow! I also felt like it came across as a bit pedantic and needed to be cut down a lot. This was my first experience with “cli-fi”, but I‘m not giving up because there were elements that I found interesting, such as the unique idea of a the city under water and the description, but overall, this was a rough book to get through. #cli-fi

#Booked2019 #spring #CliFi Gee,I finish this book on Earth Day. With 2 major flood events , sea level is 5o ft. higher in NYC.The avenues are now canals ,the rich move further north & build super scrapers & call it Super Venice while some struggle to sustain water logged buildings about to topple .Toxic investment still plays the game.Pick w/ an * a little too long w/ too many players, it was a Hugo nominee, kudos to author 4 writing on climate.

Cinfhen Well done!!!! I‘m curious about this book, but “too long” makes me nervous 😬 I‘ll wait for the summer and try my US library. It seems like a #BorrowNotBuy 5y
Leftcoastzen @Cinfhen good plan .You might give it a try.Interesting to picture NYC under those conditions and liked characters ability to adapt and do positive things under the circumstances! 5y

We will have our first 100 this week.Won‘t end till the end of September. And I‘m sure you know southwest states are sharing the Colorado river water. Not sustainable. 5y

As someone familiar with the city, I found the concept of a flooded New York interesting, as well as how humanity rebuilt after a global catastrophe. But the fact that this book is so long and has so many characters (none of whom I connected with) detracted from the story for me. Plus, there are many parts where it talks about science and economics and was very technical. And by that, I mean boring. 😝

Interesting premise about a near-future where climate change has caused coastal areas to flood. Sadly the characters didn‘t really catch my attention. I was never convinced that this ragtag group of people would ever become friends or work towards the fairly radical goal of economic change. The author created an interesting premise, and a couple decent characters, but I could not stand the daytrader/ quant dude who was focused on getting laid. When he started to complain that a detour rescuing some kids and an injured old man had ruined his date's mood, I turned it off. When are men going to stop treating women as objects with a right to feel their own feelings?

Really loved this book--engaging story, super characters, and a great perspective on climate disaster, namely, it's going to happen, and we'll deal with it when it does. The different character perspective in each chapter was nowhere near as annoying as I thought it would be, and the running commentary on climate change was informative without being shrill. Highly recommended!

Halfway through on audio. Interesting concept, super smart, but the characters are pretty flat and/or boring. The book's narrative is also quite choppy, and every chapter has 2-4 quotes preceding it. I mean, I get it. New York is the greatest city in the world, people will live there even if becomes a radioactive swamp. Got it. Thanks.
