Red Mars
Red Mars | Kim Stanley Robinson
In his most ambitious project to date, award-winning author Kim Stanley Robinson utilizes years of research and cutting-edge sceince in the first of three novels that will chronicle the colonization of Mars. for eons, sandstorms have swept the barren desolate landscape of the red planet. For centuries, Mars has beckoned to mankind to come and conquer its hostile climate. Now, in the year 2026, a group of one hundred colonists is about to fulfill that destiny. John Boone, Maya Toitavna, Frank Chalmers, and Arkady Bogdanov lead a mission whose ultimate goal is the terraforming of Mars. For some, Mars will become a passion driving them to daring acts of courage and madness; for others it offers and opportunity to strip the planet of its riches. And for the genetic "alchemists, " Mars presents a chance to create a biomedical miracle, a breakthrough that could change all we know about life... and death. The colonists place giant satellite mirrors in Martian orbit to reflect light to the planets surface. black dust sprinkled on the polar caps will capture warmth and melt the ice. And massive tunnels, kilometers in depth, will be drilled into the Martian mantle to create stupendous vents of hot gases. Against this backdrop of epic upheaval, rivalries, loves, and friendships will form and fall to pieces--for there are those who will fight to the death to prevent Mars from ever being changed. Brilliantly imagined, breathtaking in scope and ingenuity, "Red Mars" is an epic scientific saga, chronicling the next step in human evolution and creating a world in its entirety. "Red Mars" shows us a future, with both glory and tarnish, that awes with complexity and inspires with vision."The best tale of space colonization--a lyrical, beautiful, accurate legend of the future by one of the best writers of our time." -- David Brin

I call this category 'books that stuck with me'. While I would hesitate to call them favourites, I cannot stop thinking about them. To the extent that, I'm actually going to try reading the second book in the Mars trilogy. I think all I needed was a break from the tension!

Well, shucks. There were parts of this I really liked. The scientific and poetic descriptions of Mars; working out some of the practical problems of space colonization, terra-forming; debating ideologies when it comes to preserving/studying a new environment vs. the pragmatic necessities of considering how to harvest resources/transform land in order to sustain human settlement; how to build a better society. 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? And then the heavy intrusion of the popular theme 'the Earth is fucked'! which when it comes up in sci-fi, I always hope is acting as a preventative caution instead of a cynical statement. 5mo
Robotswithpersonality 3/? HOWEVER:
I get that politics, and interpersonal drama are also realistic aspects of any human endeavour, particularly a Mars colony, and expansion of such, but it was a bit too much of the text. That alone wasn't the problem. Secondly, if it weren't for Nadia, I wouldn't have had a single POV I actually enjoyed reading from.
5mo
Robotswithpersonality 4/? And then there's the inevitable 'it's gotta get worse before it gets better' cliffhanger situation built into so many first books in a series. 5mo
See All 7 Comments
Robotswithpersonality 5/6 Knowing the likely percentages of drama vs description and discussion, I'm just not willing to invest a significant amount of time into reading the next two books. 🤷🏼‍♂️ 5mo
Robotswithpersonality 6/6 ⚠️ Heads up for prospective readers, this book suffers from being published in the 90s. There's definitely stereotypes all over the place produced by unexamined sexism, racism and xenophobia, and some fairly overt Islamophobia. It was difficult for me to discern how much was one odiously intolerant character's point of view, and how much was the author not really thinking too hard about how he was presenting certain characters/arguments. 5mo
RamsFan1963 This trilogy is considered a major work in the science fiction genre. I've attempted it twice and bailed both times midway through the first book. 5mo
Robotswithpersonality @RamsFan1963 Major work doesn't necessarily mean favoured by all, I guess. 🤷🏼‍♂️ I can see giving the second book a try after a long break, though I worry putting distance between entries would further hamper my ability to get into the world of that story... 5mo

Honestly, having gotten 75 pages into Red Mars and just past the introduction of Mistake Were Made, the political undertones are enough to want to pair these as companion novels. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Meh. It captures everything I dislike about the sci-fi genre. I doubt I'll ever read book 2 or 3 of this trilogy.

But the important thing is it is off my shelf! 🎉

And it fits several of my 2023 Reading Challenges:
🛸 January #roll100 book
🛸 almost a chunkster at 615 pages for #chunksterchallenge2023
🛸 any part of a trilogy for #booked2023

I totally loved this but can also understand why lots of people struggle to enjoy KSR. My first read of his was Ministry For the Future, which I also loved, but he definitely has an expansive (some might say… long-winded) way of writing socio-political backdrops that can kind of overshadow the plot and/or the characters. This first book in the Mars series is a treasure for fans of hard sci-fi, but it helps if you like KSR‘s politics, which I do!

Definitely a hard book to read and keep up with due to its writing. It‘s got a good storyline going for it, but there‘s so much drawn out that doesn‘t feel like it needs to be. So many extra words. I do like the scientific stuff about how mars is (expected at this time) to be living on. Everything is talked about. Half is probably politics, the large group splitting into how they want to colonize Mars.

Red Mars is hugely acclaimed but I just couldn't finish it. This is the first book in Robinson's Mars Trilogy which tells the story of the terraforming of Mars from the perspective of several different colonists. The big flaw is that some of these characters are incredibly boring! While much of the novel is about political maneuvers, a lot of it is straight up science and engineering. There just wasn't enough drama for me.

RamsFan1963 Kim Stanley Robinson is one of those authors that people seem to love and gets lots of acclaim and awards, but I've never been able to finish any of his books. I find them long and boring, his characters flat with lots of talking and little action. Not my kind of science fiction. 3y
Reggie He doesn‘t know how to integrate the info with story. I‘ve only read one by him and it drove me nuts. I really wish he would workshop with someone like Max Brooks who can do what KSR aims to do but doesn‘t. 3y

I tried, I slogged through it, but never managed to get into the story or find it in myself to give a dman about the characters. It was clearly well researched, but that's all the praise I can give it.

BestDogDad I agree with you. I love Mars and typically enjoy KSR but I never got in to this. Ugh. I bought all three, now I have Blue Mars and Green Mars sitting on the shelf gathering dust. 3y
TCLinrow @BestDogDad I'm not a huge fan of KSR so far, I've only ever read New York 2140 up to now and found that a little lacking, but I still enjoyed it enough to give this one a go. I was excited about this one - love a good sci-fi and Mars is pretty awesome - but this didnt tick any of the boxes I was hoping it would. Which of his books would you recommend? 3y
RamsFan1963 How this won the Nebula for best novel is beyond me. It must have been a weak year for sci-fi novels. 3y

Finished Bk2 of November. I‘ve called it a pick, which it is I did enjoy it, but it‘s a very science heavy SciFi. It dragged in places, other places I had no clue what they were talking about, but overall it was a good read. If you like old SciFi like Asimov & co, you‘ll probably like this. It‘s also very political, so if that‘s what you enjoy, give it a try.☄️🚀

I was glad to have more time with RED MARS, too. Somehow, I always thought Robinson wrote the hardest, coldest SF possible, but he‘s got a strong human element alongside the science. I‘m enjoying this one as much as I did NEW YORK 2140.

My new favorite mug and my current read ... 🚀🤩

Yesterday, I chaperoned on my oldest's 6th grade field trip to the California Science Center, which is home to the Endeavor. Some day I will go back in less stressful circumstances so I can enjoy the exhibits more. But this mug was my reward for not losing or killing five pre-teens.

I thought I would get to read this book on the bus, but the environment was not conducive. Lol

madamereadsalot1 I love that mug! I grew up, and still live, near Johnson Space Center, home of "Houston, we have a problem". So I have an affection for all things NASA! 5y
RamsFan1963 @SleepyDragon I'd be interested to hear what you think of Red Mars. I've always found Robinson difficult to read, I bailed on the Mars trilogy. 5y
SleepyDragon @madamereadsalot1 That is so cool! My dad has always been really into all things space related, and I guess it rubbed off a lot on me. I didn't have the aptitude for all the science and math required, so I've had to content myself with reading about space exploration.

5y
SleepyDragon @RamsFan1963 I'm not very far into it yet, haven't had much time to read lately. It's a bit more political than I was expecting, but we'll see if I can get into the story enough to read the entire trilogy. 5y

I'm starting to feel self-conscious over the number of bails lately. In this case, I thought for sure it was going to work for me. It's a Nebula award winning book about near-future Mars colony.

Alas, after the first chapter that was a pretty intriguing hook, the book turned into a brick wall of "telling". I tried skimming but that didn't help, and I could not get invested in the characters at all.

?

Andrew65 Hope you get to a good book soon. 5y

In a several ways this book reminded me of The Martian. Lots of scientific information writen into the story and characters that are relatable. The plot was a little slow sometimes but it was so well written it didn't bother me much. I thought the story was a realistic view of how things might progress if humans ever colonized another planet. 4.5 stars
