A little reading before bed on a wild Friday night 😜 A lot of historical information, well researched, but I don‘t feel like I‘m reading a textbook (so far). I have NOT seen the movie 🍿

I was expecting this to be a light-hearted SNL listen (a la Tina Fey, Colin Jost, etc) but, holy sh*t, some of it is horrifying! I‘m not saying it‘s a bad listen at all, just unexpected from the guy who did SNL‘s Bill Clinton impersonation and Sean “I‘ll take S words for 500” Connery
“I‘ve never met a celebrity who does not respond to the opening line, ‘Congratulations.‘ Try it. It takes four seconds for them to come up with the reason they‘re being congratulated, and they‘re instantly in a good mood.”
“definition of a victimless crime” 😂 enjoyable quick read, but it‘s definitely a library pick for me. Don‘t think I‘d actually buy this one. Love Kathy tho
Another find from NPR‘s Best of 2021 list. Chock full of information! You could make a sweet playlist after reading this 🎤
“Feeding wild animals is the quickest path to conflict. The promise of food motivates normally human-shy animals to take a risk. The risk-taking is rewarded, and the behavior escalates. Shyness becomes fearlessness, and fearlessness becomes aggression. If you don‘t hand over the food you‘re carrying, the monkey will grab it. If you try to hold onto it, or push the animal away, Qureshi says, it may slap you. Or bite you.” [pic unrelated]
Hit the earth three times with your stick. Lift your eyes to the hole in the night. Remember that darkness simply requires another way of seeing. Be your own light. And just like that, you‘ll find yourself everywhere instantly. Field field field, one of us thinks. Hockey hockey hockey, we reply. There are so many things to say in the language of our kind, but really, nothing more needs to be said.
Life isn‘t about the spells we cast, but the friends we made along the way.
Saw this book mentioned on NPR (maybe the best books of 2021 collection?). Don‘t be fooled by the staid cover; there is some quality, wry stuff in here. Got this from the library 😍
This graphic novel takes place in one corner of a room over hundreds of thousands of years. What a concept!
The scope of this book is wide (and cruel at times). But I guess it takes a village to create a monster. I got a little lost but the storylines and characters are meaningful. Very good graphic novel if you‘re into that.
One of the non graphic novels I got from my library haul today
Destroy All Monsters was another graphic novel on NPR‘s Best Book list. The library didn‘t have that one, but we did have these! They look very 70‘s, crime, noir, B movie so I‘m gonna check them out 🪓
“Set in a post-apocalyptic Earth, Diana suddenly wakes from a centuries-long, cryogenically induced slumber with weakened powers and little memory.” From NPR‘s Best Books of 2020 list 💫
Instead of asking people “What‘s wrong with you?” we should be asking “What happened to you?” Oprah and a brain scientist talk about how trauma causes adult maladaptive behavior. I‘m listening to the audiobook and it comes across a bit like a podcast honestly! The science isn‘t too complicated to understand and they‘re using a lot of real world examples showcasing what concept they‘re trying to put forth. Enjoying this one @ 1.2x speed 🙇♀️
This has been on my to-read list for the LONGEST. Finally cracking it open paired with Shh…It‘s Top Secret! by OPI 💅
I‘m really digging this YA “nonfiction” book about Mary Shelley‘s life.
Oof. She did not have it easy. 🧟♂️⚡️
“I felt betrayed, the way you do when you discover that your cat has a secret secondary life and is being fed by neighbors who call him something stupid like Calypso. Worse is that he loves them as much as he loves you, which is to say not at all, really. The entire relationship has been your own invention.”
I have Psalm for the Wild-Built on my Kindle, but saw this at the library and it was kinda short looking and had good reviews so though I‘d give it a shot. Looks like the characters can take supplements and live on hostile planets, for some reason I read that and was like COOL I NEED 2 READ IMMEDIATELY ??
Listening to this 💎 gem 💎 on CD. I don‘t know if these stories are true but the audio version is an EXPERIENCE 👍
SURGERY FOR KNEE ARTHRITIS IS UNNECESSARY etc.
Starting this book. Should be a good October spooky read 👻
Author‘s memoir about her struggle with binge eating disorder. In this passage, she talks about what benefit she felt like she got from her #eatingdisorder
Also started this one by Lindy West. A collection of essays where Lindy “rewatch[es] successful movies from the past to see how they hold up to our shifting modern sensibilities.” She rates movies on a scale of 1 out of 10 dvds of The Fugitive, whereas The Fugitive is rated 13 dvds out of 10 dvds of The Fugitive.
This book is the authors debut and it‘s really good. Raj is on the verge of getting kicked off his elite tennis club after saying something beyond cringey and inappropriate while interviewing prospective members. Only so many people could pull off writing the protagonist‘s “faux pas” as well as Pandya does. Raj is a fully fleshed out, woeful character that I can‘t help but root for.
I‘m gonna start posting this after every 1 and 2-star review I give out!
It‘s expensive to be me. #erikajayne
“All stories end in death, and he is no true storyteller who does not tell you that.”
I don‘t have a tattoo, but if I got one, I‘d want these bad bitchz- Clotho, Lachesis, and Atropos #hecateae #greekmythology #threesisters #thefates
Did you know Sarah‘s Scribbles wrote a horror comic? A vampire dates a werewolf. It‘s so cyute!
“A young archaeology graduate student at Harvard is bludgeoned to death by the professor with whom she‘s having an affair... Harvard, determined to avoid bad publicity, thwarts a police investigation, protects the professor and silences the press. It‘s as if the murder never happened.” via New York Times
Great cover but there‘s quite a bit of controversy surrounding the author - Amanda Harlowe. She is accused of taking people‘s personal information and trauma for this book.
The authors first book - at 77 years old! A memoir about her mother‘s knack for twisting reality.
“Maybe there‘s something wrong at the Universal Fairness and Balanced Department. It‘s fucking MAYHEM out there.”
I‘m very excited that BROSH is BACK.
I don‘t know how a diet/nutrition book would go on audio, but we‘ll give this one a try. It is well reviewed on audible.
Books on cd! I‘ll probably start with the Fasting Lane one though
The dark days of oil spills are over according to this book. “More oil is poured down the drain by mechanics changing their engine oil than is spilled by the worlds fleet of oil tankers.”
I thought this book was released in 2005 bc the cover was a little corny, but it‘s from 2020! There are some terrible jokes in here but I died laughing in Chapter 2 (still reading, only on Chapter 3, so could keep going or could fall flat, who knows). For now I am very happy with this checkout from the library. Spill the tea plz ☕️
Does anyone else work in Quality Control?! Sometimes your cheese holes line up. 🧀 🤷♀️
Staying up late to read a book about sleeping? Also, there are surprisingly a large amount of holds on this book at my library. Back off, patrons!
“Have you ever found yourself wondering what we might have in common with stars, or why the moon never leaves us? Thinking about the precise dancing of planets, the passage of time, or the nature of natural things?”
My current read is very interesting and Matt Parker does a great job of taking the math out of the math talk. Every few pages are packed with real world examples of humans mistakenly applying math (or maybe math getting the last laugh?). Fun read. I‘ll pick it up later though because Teddy needs the lumbar support for right now. #catcuddles
An Instagram star with a body by Reformer Pilates has a stalker.
Has anyone actually read this? Any good?
A “synthetic woman” obeys her Husband‘s every command according to the Hierarchy rules. Barely tolerated by his wife and unbeknownst to his child, the A.I. starts to keeps diary and starts to find a sense of self.
I‘ve never read a book by her but I tell everyone I love her books?!
Young, beautiful sister murders men. Older sister is a bit more reserved (also a nurse!) & helps the younger one clean up the mess. Set in Lagos, Nigeria.
We don‘t get all the WHYs, but there‘s enough there to guess. The author does a great job of showing and not telling in terms of the sisters‘ dynamic, police corruption, women/men & power, etc. The chapters are short and punchy, the book moves fast.
