Bird Box: A Novel | Josh Malerman
Something is out there . . .Something terrifying that must not be seen. One glimpse and a person is driven to deadly violence. No one knows what it is or where it came from.Five years after it began, a handful of scattered survivors remain, including Malorie and her two young children. Living in an abandoned house near the river, Malorie has long dreamed of fleeing to a place where her family might be safe. But the journey ahead will be terrifying: twenty miles downriver in a rowboatblindfoldedwith nothing to rely on but Malorie's wits and the children's trained ears. One wrong choice and they will die. And something is following them. But is it man, animal, or monster?Engulfed in darkness, surrounded by sounds both familiar and frightening, Malorie embarks on a harrowing odysseya trip that takes her into an unseen world and back into the past, to the companions who once saved her. Under the guidance of the stalwart Tom, a motley group of strangers banded together against the unseen terror, creating order from the chaos. But when supplies ran low, they were forced to venture outsideand confront the ultimate question: in a world gone mad, who can really be trusted?Interweaving past and present, Josh Malerman's breathtaking debut is a horrific and gripping snapshot of a world unraveled that will have you racing to the final page.

This was a great read, the story really grows on you towards the end as the story wraps up and the pieces fall into place. I don't think I'll be reading the second book that follows this one, this was a book that can stand on its own. Enjoyable, had some dystopian elements. Had an unknown creature aspect that kept my interest. #BookSpin #BookBingo #TeamSlaughter #Scarathlon2021 #Readathon One Book Complete

I'll.tally the pts later tonight.

marleed I didn‘t realize there was a book 2. I agree that it stands on its own. Have you seen the movie yet? I liked both. I saw the movie and then tracked down the book. 2mo
rsteve388 @marleed I am such a scarry cat I probably won't watch the movie. Give me a horror novel and I am game but a movie wem now that's too much. 2mo
marleed @rsteve388 haha. It‘s an interesting watch - esp since you know how it ends now! The wisdom of the kids living a life blindfolded is missing in the movie, but Sandra Bullock badassness as their mom - I actually liked better in the movie. So a win for both! 2mo

I couldn't put this down! It had all the thrills, chills, horror & suspense I was looking for! From the premise to the execution, this story had me hooked!
Different enough from the movie to feel fresh. The situation is absolutely terrifying & you can't help cheering for the MC despite her prickly personality. This is horror done right! Seriously, I lost sleep over this one (because I stayed up too late reading)! Must. Read. Sequel. Immediately.

Wow! 5 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯 This was a deep dive rollercoaster ride. Make sure you have your safety blanket all cuddle up in, when you read this novel. Excellent suspense, and horror. The world goes bonkers mysteriously killing themselves and others. Malory finds a safe house with others and they all must find away to survive. #Horror #Suspense #20in4

I'm not any kind of horror expert. But I've read my share. I've read Stoker, Poe, Jackson. When I was in high school and college, Dean Koontz, Peter Straub, Anne Rice (does she count as horror?). I've read probably more than half of Stephen King.

Bird Box is the scariest book I've ever read. I'd put this one in the freezer if it weren't on my Kindle.

Soubhiville I thought this was pretty scary too, but I loved it! 4mo

Ok, what is up with the movie adaption of this making so many changes?! Strange. Book was better/more realistic. I liked the switching timelines and it wasn't hard to follow. I do tend to think authors stretch imagination when there is that one moment when all the pivotal things happen. Coincidental, no? Lol then again life can be/feel like that.
Not a read if you're still feeling covid isolated, altho maybe like for me, it helps silver line it.

marleed I liked both but saw the movie first. I really did like the badassness of Sandra Bullock in the movie more than the book portrayal. But I thought the movie missed what was really important to the book - the kids lived their lives blindfolded and in visceral ways were prepared for real world (well, real in this dystopia!) situations in ways adults could not. 5mo
Andrea4 @marleed I liked both too. I thought it was strange how much they changed the characters and their dynamics though. And yes, so much effort is put into describing how she trained them and that gets overshadowed in the movie. 5mo

A #pageturner like no other. Propelled through the story of Malorie and her two children, I finished this book in less than 24 hours. Even though I knew the ending, having watched the movie, the story was still enjoyable. It‘s always interesting to see how a text has been adapted onto the screen. I have to say, the novel is darker than the movie but I couldn‘t put it down.

I finished Bird Box yesterday and really enjoyed it. I had previously seen the movie so I knew the basic story. After reading this I think the movie did the book justice. One big difference though is the book is written using different times jumping between past and present. I'm not always a big fan of that but for this book I think it worked out really well.

Our resident magpie came down to say hello while I was outside reading this afternoon. She was a baby in the gumtree behind our yard a few years ago, now she comes back every spring to nest in the same tree. We‘ve almost gotten her taking food from our hands. Most magpies are swooping everyone right now, but Maggie just comes down to say hi & get a feed before going back to her nest. It‘s a privilege to befriend a wild animal.🦅

Seems like maybe I‘m not good with audiobooks. I enjoyed what I listened to before Libby yanked it back, so I‘m going to call it a pick. The suspense is there, the main character isn‘t annoying like they can sometimes be in this genre, and the concept of being blindfolded is really interesting. Hope I run across a copy of this at a thrift store 🤞

I wanted to read this book as soon as the movie came out. The author well conveyed the atmosphere of the post-Apocalypse, as well as the attitude and reaction of people to what is happening! I read the book in two days, because it's small. So I didn't get tired of it and read it with pleasure. After reading it, I immediately watched the movie. The plot doesn't exactly match the book, but I liked it! I guess it's because I like Sandra Bullock! 🐦

Simplykellyk Watched the movie first because of all the hype. I liked it. It freaked me out. But I liked it. The book 💯 better than the movie. Totes could have been because I liked Sandra bullock too though. 🤷🏽‍♀️ 1y

Yes, this is the basis for the Netflix movie. A world where if you see the monsters, you go crazy, killing yourself and everyone around you, so the only way to survive is not to look at the outside world. Melanie, a young mother, is trying to canoe down a river with her two young children, everyone blindfolded, in search of other survivors.
