Bird Box: A Novel | Josh Malerman
Something is out there . . .Something terrifying that must not be seen. One glimpse and a person is driven to deadly violence. No one knows what it is or where it came from.Five years after it began, a handful of scattered survivors remain, including Malorie and her two young children. Living in an abandoned house near the river, Malorie has long dreamed of fleeing to a place where her family might be safe. But the journey ahead will be terrifying: twenty miles downriver in a rowboat—blindfolded—with nothing to rely on but Malorie's wits and the children's trained ears. One wrong choice and they will die. And something is following them. But is it man, animal, or monster?Engulfed in darkness, surrounded by sounds both familiar and frightening, Malorie embarks on a harrowing odyssey—a trip that takes her into an unseen world and back into the past, to the companions who once saved her. Under the guidance of the stalwart Tom, a motley group of strangers banded together against the unseen terror, creating order from the chaos. But when supplies ran low, they were forced to venture outside—and confront the ultimate question: in a world gone mad, who can really be trusted?Interweaving past and present, Josh Malerman's breathtaking debut is a horrific and gripping snapshot of a world unraveled that will have you racing to the final page.

This was definitely a case of #litsymademedoit or #blameitonlitsy since I'm not sure if I would have picked it up otherwise. Or known it was a book since people talk about the movie.
I really liked it even though it was really creepy and not what I consider to be my cup of tea. This was a really disturbing read to be honest, but if you're up for something that will give you the chills give it a go. Malory is a hero!
Now I need to watch that movie.

I‘ve spent the past 2 days hiding from the world and devouring this book. Thrilling and dark, I truly enjoyed it. Slightly different from the movie but in all the best ways.

marleed The kids in the book had me deciding the script writers missed a beat (saw the movie first). Since in the book the kids having never seen daylight negotiate their world better than their mother. 2w
teainthelibrary @marleed I definitely agree! I really enjoyed that aspect of their relationship (relying on their senses versus her own) and her feelings of guilt over raising them to be that way. It was a great dynamic! I‘m going to rewatch the movie tonight so I‘m hoping to pick up on more differences. 2w

I thought this was awesome. Super suspenseful and downright scary at times. Your imagination really runs wild when you can't see and have no idea what could be out there, what could be right next to you. Kept me on the edge of my seat. A very fast read.

marleed I watched the movie then read the book. Liked both. One thing I think the book did well but the movie missed... The kids never saw daylight. In the book they could negotiate space and sound much better than their mother. After reading the book that miss in the movie still bugs me. 2w

Really liked the idea/concept behind the book. Maybe I made the mistake of watching the movie version first but I didn't enjoy the book as much as I thought I might. There are a lot of differences between the book and the movie. Somethings I preferred in the movie and others the book. Was still enjoyable and creepy lol

This was really something. I didn‘t expect much but I did race through this book, I couldn‘t put it down and it was really scary without getting cheesy or cheap.

Afterwards I watched the movie with my daughter but compared to the book it‘s so much less psychological and I realize that‘s what makes the book so good.

Librarybelle I have this on my to read stack...not my usual type of book, but @Chrissyreadit listed it as a good one for the #NewYearWhoDis , so I‘m game for it! (edited) 3w
BarbaraBB @Librarybelle I started it just to tackle another #ReadingUSA2019 state, but then it was unexpectedly very good, so I should give it a try if I were you! 3w
Cathythoughts I‘m still afraid to read it 🤷🏻‍♀️ 3w
Billypar I strongly preferred the book to the movie, in spite of the fact that I thought the characters were stronger in the movie. But I didn't find the movie scary: the book did a much better job building suspense. 3w

I've not seen the film but I really enjoyed the book. The premise is very unique and leads to extremely tense scenes where there might be nothing going on or there might actually be extreme danger... You can't tell blind. I like how the characters have no actual idea what is going on rather than everything being spelt out. Keeps with the theme of the fear of the unknown. Also horribly violent at times but not in a cheap way.

rohit-sawant Loved this one! 3w

This was an amazing ride. I love the back and forth. Needless to say the book is better than the movie. I enjoyed noting the differences, though. I usually read the book then movie but I did not realize there was a book when I watched the movie. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

aroc Does the book give you more explanation of what is happening to the people? My hubby and I watched the movie and I need answers! 😊 2mo
Slajaunie @aroc Not really. There are a few details that the movie did not show though. Birds and dogs are affected, possibly other animals as well. The creatures are solid. One holds Mallory‘s boat and pulls on her blindfold. I think that is it. 2mo

Wow, this is amazing!!
Not what I expected (I somehow thought it was about a family held captive by a violent man) but SO much better.
Post-apocalyptic dystopian future is completely my thing, and this one was so well done!
I did have a bit of a panic attack in the scene where Mallorie and Victor are in the bar. No thank you!
But one of my favourite reads of 2019 so far!

I haven't seen the Netflix film and probably won't- this was too good.

Took me all of 2 1/2 days to read this. It was a great read and kept me on the edge the entire time.

I love Malerman's writing style, this is the first book of his I've read (probably wont be the last).

I'm interested to see how Netflix did in bringing this one to life.

Now for the real truth - I HATED the ending!!!!! No spoilers here, but what a complete let down, for me at least.

4 out of 5 stars, definitely recommend, despite the ending

So I drive a lot for my job and I rely heavily on audiobooks from my local library. This one, however, is killing me. No disrespect to audiobook readers but this one is a little slow. Maybe the narrator is trying to add to the intensity. The book itself is interesting. I have not seen the movie and when I first saw the trailers, I thought it sounded silly but the book has changed my views so far.

Hovers between a pick and so-so. I was actually expecting more tension and build-up, and just didn‘t feel it. Which by itself, wouldn‘t be a problem, but I also felt the character development of Malorie‘s roommates fell flat.

Could this possibly be one of the rare instances that I enjoy the movie more than the book? I‘ll let you know after I watch it this weekend!

Very tense book. I‘m curious to see how the film adapts the story, since I am sure there are things it cannot translate.
There are characters I want to hug, characters I want to punch, and situations I want to mourn. I‘d say more but I don‘t want to spoil anything. 🤭

Interested to watch the film; I can't imagine how they could manage to create that kind of tension through a visual media. Bit disappointed with the end though. I guess this is gonna be an unpopular opinion but I didn‘t love it. First off, why don‘t those kids have names? I didn‘t feel sympathy for Malorie at all, maybe I was reading her voice wrong but she seemed too harsh to me. I didn‘t feel any suspense, and the one part that should have been scary just seemed chaotic and confusing. Oh, and Gary is the worst. The picture is how I feel after staying up too late to finish this book!

Happy to say that I ended up really enjoying this, though it was a bit overhyped. It took me until the last 3rd to care about the main character's fate but I did like the overall story, other characters, and the intensity of the situation.

The atmosphere was creepy and the last 3rd was difficult to put down. However, the ending was disappointing and I still had questions about the creatures. Short chapters were good paced.
