Kindred | Octavia E. Butler
A whole new look for the classic novel that has sold over 450,000 copies Dana, a modern black woman, is celebrating her twenty-sixth birthday with her new husband when she is snatched abruptly from her home in California and transported to the antebellum South. Rufus, the white son of a plantation owner, is drowning, and Dana has been summoned to save him. Dana is drawn back repeatedly through time to the slave quarters, and each time the stay grows longer, more arduous, and more dangerous until it is uncertain whether or not Dana's life will end, long before it has a chance to begin.

I devoured Kindred, and then I cleaned the porch this weekend. Yes, this porch is clean. I even sprayed down, soaped up, rinsed, repeated, and then dried this area rug in the sun. I feel like I have so much to write about my experience with the book! #lmpbc #round5 #groupQ

I was practically holding my breath and in an adrenaline rush throughout this whole book. It was uncomfortable but great. What would you do if you were suddenly pulled through time to ante bellum Maryland? How would you survive? How would it change you? Recommended.

Reggie I never would have found this book without Litsy and it‘s one of my new all time favorites. After reading this I felt my high school really let me down in history. 2w
Leniverse @Reggie This is my first Octavia Butler. She's been on my TBR for a couple of years now, but I can't believe I didn't hear about her until a couple of years ago. I'm a sci-fi reader and it took me almost 40 years to come across her!? Fortunately I am starting to see her mentioned now, so perhaps her books will see a revival. 2w

Squeezing in #lmpbc reading when and wherever I can. 53 pages already today. It‘s a release from reading about genealogy, but it‘s also all about genealogy and navigating the past, so I‘m reading it *as* a genealogist... #round5 #groupQ

ValerieAndBooks I love genealogy! Hoping to get more active with it when I become an empty nester in the fall! I‘ve had this book stacked for a long time btw. 3w
mrsmarch @ValerieAndBooks I am in the DAR and I looooove lineage research! One morning I was having trouble getting out of bed and my husband said “Today‘s the day you get dead people” i.e. I had arranged daycare for my youngest so I could go to the library and read tax rolls on microfilm and I nearly leapt out of bed in excitement. 2w
ValerieAndBooks @mrsmarch awesome !! My grandmother was in the DAR and I have been meaning for years to join but life always got in the way — have actually been in touch with the local registrar and need to schedule a meeting with her to show her the info I have and then go from there. 2w
mrsmarch @ValerieAndBooks If your grandmother was a member, your path should be well-paved. I wish you luck. What‘s the chapter or the town? 2w
ValerieAndBooks Hopefully!! Her chapter was one she joined in Northern California back in the 70s when requirements might have been different. But she did a lot of on the ground genealogy And passed away before the internet really took off. The chapter I‘m currently in contact with is in West Chester PA. What about you? 2w
mrsmarch @ValerieAndBooks Boston MA. Boston Tea Party Chapter 1-009 MA. I‘m starting my second three-year stint as Registrar! You might have to fill in some blanks because yes, some things might be needed to bring an application up to today‘s requirements, but it shouldn‘t be onerous. Good luck!🍀 (edited) 2w
ValerieAndBooks That is really cool! My oldest graduated from Berklee College of Music last year (now in Nashville) - Boston is so full of history that I still haven‘t seen all of it! Now I know who on Litsy to discuss DAR stuff with 😊 2w
mrsmarch @ValerieAndBooks Oh yes, I‘m always here for DAR talk. 🌟 2w

Finished Kindred at my favorite neighborhood Chinese restaurant. This book was so well done and a great intro to sci-fi for those that aren‘t fans of the genre. Some very powerful and emotional moments but I was slightly disappointed with what seemed an abrupt ending to me. I‘m not quite sure what more I wanted from it but it felt just a tiny bit lacking. Still highly recommended though!

This is a time travel book that is not concerned or bogged down with the mechanics OF time travel because that is sort of besides the point. Octavia E Butler hit this out of the park! I‘ve watched interviews with her and she‘s a kindred spirit to me. Highly recommend this book. Set in the 70s and during slavery in early-mid 1800s. Her writing is right up my alley...”Butler‘s literary craftsmanship is superb” I couldn‘t say it better than the Washington Post. I would say this is a time travel historical fiction/slave narrative. It‘s hard hitting and gripping. 5⭐️

I have so many thoughts about this book - more than I can fit here. Overall I‘d call it a pick though - it‘s definitely an interesting read. It‘s more historical fiction that uses science fiction as a vehicle - and telling the story in the way Butler did was powerful at times. Witnessing slavery through 20th century eyes gives it our own perspective, puts us into the story and makes us think- who would we be, how would we react?

Such a unique exploration of slavery. An African-American woman in the 1970s travels back in time to the Antebellum South in 1815 to the plantation of her slave owning ancestor. What follows is a story both fascinating and disturbing (there are some gruesome scenes I wasn't prepared for) told in a writing style easy to slip into. Complex, thought provoking, and unputdownable. Everyone should read this. A new favorite.

So I'm late to the party by about four decades, but this is SO GOOD! I was immediately captured by the story and just didn't want to put it down. It's such an insightful look at racism and sexism, and is still relevant today. It's not perfect but I can easily overlook the plot holes for something this entertaining.

Since February is black history month, I decided to read the first ever sf book published by a black woman.
I wouldn‘t call it sci-fi but more a dark historical fantasy. A black woman from 1976 time travels to a plantation in 1815 Maryland.
I could barely put the book down, it‘s very well written, terrifying account about slavery and how easy it is to ‘get used to it‘. I‘ll never understand the horror men do to others for the shallowest reasons.

Liatrek I‘ve been in love with Keanu since Bill and Ted 😊 And omg yes why hasn‘t Kindred been made into a movie! I honestly would love to see any of her books adapted especially Parable of the Sower. 4mo
EchoLogical @Liatrek I wonder if we could start a petition and get Lupita to star as Dana! 4mo
Liatrek @EchoLogical Omg that would be perfect casting! 4mo

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
My first Octavia Butler book was a book of short stories I read last year, and one of the things I loved about it was how thought-provoking all the stories were. I really loved that about this book too. There‘s a lot to think about, and I like how time travel was used to set up some of those questions.

I see why this book would be an important one to read, but it was also gut-wrenching and altogether difficult to get through. The author does an impressive job taking you with the character back to her own personal hell and the hell of so many who suffered at the hands of slavery. Definitely left me outside my comfort zone.

ProfReader I can‘t wait to read this novel!!! 4mo
jasreadsquiteabit It was amazing! Please let me know what you think once you‘ve finished! 4mo

In the wake of news stories like yesterday‘s, I think KINDRED should be required reading for every high schooler. I really can‘t stop thinking about it. #howjessreadsin2019
