The Hellbound Heart
The Hellbound Heart | Clive Barker
Frank Cotton's insatiable appetite for the dark pleasures of pain led him to the puzzle of Lemarchand's box, and from there, to a death only a sick-minded soul could invent. But his brother's love-crazed wife, Julia, has discovered a way to bring Frank backthough the price will be bloody and terrible . . . and there will certainly be hell to pay.

A quick, sometimes beautifully written novella that contains a vast mythology. Barker‘s work is fascinating, and it is now difficult to separate it from the movie franchise it spawned. The movie varies only in a few places from the book, so it was impossible for me not to picture the actors as we read. I want to read more Barker!

TrishB Wrote some amazing books 👍🏻 11mo
Michael_Gee @TrishB I have the 3 volumes of Books of Blood as well as the Damnation Game on my shelf. What would you recommend (of those or others)? 11mo
TrishB Those are the strictly horror ones- after those he goes off more into fantasy horror- I would go with Weaveworld then The Great and Secret Show and Everville. 11mo

Reggie I 2nd @TrishB. One of my favorite books ever is The Great and Secret Show. Later in life Clive goes to a dentist and gets toxic shock. He spends the next 3 months in a coma and has I think 2 heart attacks. On a podcast he describes having this crazy nightmare and I thought to myself, that‘s straight out of The Great and Secret Show. 11mo
TrishB @Reggie it definitely is! 11mo

Short, thrilling, exciting and filthy. One of my favorite horror stories that started a movie franchise with 9 nonsense sequels with another one coming out just recently. Check out the Mind books podcast ep. 21 where we had a lot of fun discussing this book as well as ALL the movies that I unfortunately watched: https://bit.ly/3BpeXFg

💁Husband: We should watch the new Hellraiser movie, here, watch this trailer.
💁🏻‍♀️Me: Sure, want to read the book first?
🙎Husband: That sounds fun!
Us, one week later: 😳😵😵‍💫

@Blueberry

ShyBookOwl 😂😂😂 I had a very similar experience a couple years ago. My husband and I realized we weren't sure we'd ever actually seen Hellraiser but I wanted to read the book first. When I was done I had no words, and was like, ummm yeah... we can watch it I guess maybe if u still want 😅 Afterwards, he was like, WHY?! And I was like, at least you didn't read the book!! 2y
NataliePatalie @ShyBookOwl I'm usually really into horror but all the sexual stuff in this book really turned me off! I guess if I'd done any research beforehand I would've figured this out sooner, buuuttt...🤷🏻‍♀️ 2y

I reread this in honor of the new Hellraiser movie that came out today. It‘s funny how they say that in Silence of the Lambs, Anthony Hopkins is only in the movie for 15 minutes. But he‘s basically the face of that movie. In this book, there is a Pinhead character but the meat of this story is the human drama of a man bored with the world reaching for more and finding all the horror that comes with that. A woman who craves passion and danger👇🏼

Reggie but not from the man she married, who she does not love. There is a husband who is realizing that his wife may not love him. So much going on and then add the horror and it‘s fantastic. Barker is a wonderful writer. I still love him🖤 2y
vivastory I read Books of Blood volume 1 the end of April & it remains a favorite of the yr. 2y

The first thing I opened was the pack of pens and I literally squealed and ran to find batteries!!! I blinded myself but I'm excited! I have been meaning to order non crappy diamond art pens for so long and I can't wait to try these out. I'm dying to use the bath salts and am digging into the pull n peels (my favourite!) As we speak. Laura Secord makes the best chocolate so I might try that instead of my coffee tomorrow. And the socks....awesome!

FantasyChick Can't wait to read the Barker. I've actually wanted to get my hands on that for a while. Thank you SO much @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego You amaze as always. I know this year is tough but I do hope you had a good holiday regardless. Much love to you 😘😘😘 #poutinepenpals 2y

🎧📚 I listened to the audiobook and it is eerily similar to Hellraiser the movie! I loved it!! It‘s so dated but still so fun to hear it versus reading it! I can‘t find the book! 😭

Frank is a sick sick man and is obsessed with some really dark stuff. He finds a puzzle box (yes that one) and Yeahp HE‘S DEAD!

I still love it!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 👇🏻

Twainy Julia, such a bad example. SHES got it bad for her dead brother in law. She finds a way to bring Frank back!! How could that go wrong LOL she is so bad! Blood, death, torture, hell, PINHEAD! It‘s been a long time since I‘ve picked up this book. 3y

BookReader01 How do I go about getting g to read a book title life at the end of a throttle cable daredevil Ken Mackow how do you read books on here 5y
Reggie @BookReader01 Litsy is more a site for reviewing and talking about a book. But if you wanna read a book for free online just go to your library and sign up for a card and I think most libraries have an online app they subscribe to that lets you read e-books for free like the apps Hoopla or Libby, I think. Help me out here @LibrarianRyan @Librarybelle @Christy2318 I don‘t use the library. (I Know, shame) these three are librarians. 😊 5y
Librarybelle @Reggie You are correct! @BookReader01 , if you would like to read the book you mentioned, you may want to check out your local library. Most libraries now offer an e-platform that you can download ebooks or eaudiobooks. If the library doesn‘t have that title, they may offer a service that allows you to request a purchase. Good luck! 5y
Reggie @Librarybelle Thanks!!! 5y
LibrarianRyan @BookReader01 @Reggie is correct. Every once in a while people will give away books or galleys. But for the most part about the only free legal place to read free books is from the library. 5y
Reggie @LibrarianRyan Thank you! 5y
Librarybelle @Reggie You‘re welcome! Happy to help! 🙂 5y
Christy2318 @BookReader01 @Reggie I‘m not a librarian just an obsessive library patron with multiple library cards. I access Libby with 2 of my library cards & Hoopla with one. My 3rd library uses RB Digital which is mostly audio books. OpenLibrary.org has scans of a lot of out of print books. Since it‘s mostly scans of mass market paperbacks, it reads better on a tablet than a phone. 5y
Reggie @Christy2318 my bad I just assumed after your post about your library the other day, however, they‘re lucky to have such a passionate library patron. Thanks for the info!!!! 5y

This book‘s undercurrent is exactly what draws me to horror. It touches on human flaws in a tragic and horrific ways. Though it isn‘t scary, it made me cringe at its vivid descriptions. The flowing language and precise word choice made each sentence beautiful in its own right, adding to the creepiness. It‘s a bit older, so there were some techniques that he used that I had to get used to, (head-hopping especially) but it worked!

Barker may be one of the greatest contemporary writers period from an artistic standpoint. Nobody quite has the flare for words that he possesses. Having read all of his work short of Coldheart Canyon, this book was so influential on concept alone that one can scarcely discount it, whether you like it or not. A great story of gluttony, desire, and the darkness that comes with it.

Reggie I still remember reading this for the first time a couple of years ago and telling a guy at work about how one of the Cennobites appears on a chair fashioned of severed tongues. My favorite of his is The Great and Secret Show and Everville, followed closely by Weaveworld. 5y

My husband has not read an entire book in over 13 years, so I was so excited the other day when he said he ordered a book and was going to read it. Then he went and did this! 😫 Oh the horror! I might need to get him his own bookmark if he keeps reading!

#17booklove Day 24: Heart in the title. This book didn't quite scare me, but it did unnerve me, and now whenever I hear church bells I get uneasy.

Found this UK copy at a garage sale a while back, and finally got around to reading it. The Cenobites were so much cooler before all the mystery got wrung out of them, so there's nothing like going back to the source.

The inspiration for Hellraiser. Creepy, violent, disturbing. Fab late night read.
