John Dies at the End
John Dies at the End | David Wong
David Wong has updated the Lovecraft tradition and infused it with humor that rather than lessening the horror, increases it dramatically. Every time I set the book down down, I was wary that something really was afoot, that there were creatures I couldn't see, and that because I suspected this, I was next. Engaging, comic, and terrifying.-- Joe Garden, Features Editor, The Onion"Wong is like a mash-up of Douglass Adams and Stephen King... 'page-turner' is an understatement."--Don Coscarelli, director, Phantasm I-V, Bubba Ho-tep"That rarest of things--a genuinely scary story."--David Wellington, author of Monster Island, Vampire Zero"JOHN DIES AT THE END has a cult following for a reason: it's horrific, thought-provoking, and hilarious all at once. This is one of the most entertaining and addictive novels I've ever read."--Jacob Kier, Publisher, Permuted Press STOP. You should not have touched this flyer with your bare hands. NO, don't put it down. It's too late. They're watching you. My name is David Wong. My best friend is John. Those names are fake. You might want to change yours. You may not want to know about the things you'll read on these pages, about the sauce, about Korrok, about the invasion, and the future. But it's too late. You touched the book. You're in the game. You're under the eye. The only defense is knowledge. You need to read this book, to the end. Even the part with the bratwurst. Why? You just have to trust me.The important thing is this: The drug is called Soy Sauce and it gives users a window into another dimension. John and I never had the chance to say no. You still do. I'm sorry to have involved you in this, I really am. But as you read about these terrible events and the very dark epoch the world is about to enter as a result, it is crucial you keep one thing in mind: None of this was my fault.

What a fun story to go through. It's both terrifying and hilarious. After finishing this one I just had to start the next in the series.

If you like horror (and probably a few penis jokes) give this a read!

The image on the bottom right corner of the cover accurately reflects how I feel about this book. It was not for me. I can see its appeal for others and maybe it would have been better in print rather than audio. I listened to the second half at 1.5X speed, so maybe I would have bailed in print. I was just annoyed by the “drunk guy” humor and mad I bought the whole series. 🤦🏻‍♀️ At least it counts for MountTBR and #Screamathon.

4thhouseontheleft Doesn‘t sound like one I would like either. Too bad it was a bust. 1mo
DGRachel @4thhouseontheleft I was disappointed, but at least it managed to take three books off my TBR. I know I don‘t want to bother with the other two in the series. 1mo

julesG @Birdsong28 So annoying. If it's that Wind-guy you're talking about 😁😁, he's probably feeding ducks. 4mo
Birdsong28 @julesg Wind guy? Mine is Mayandree Michel she did the tagged book and Sacrifice which was planned to be a trilogy and it left it open to be another one. It's about a girl who discovers she is a Greek god and has to gain her powers and work with the other gods. It was really good. 4mo

I started this book around midnight last night, then read today for an hour in a really hot bath with a sinus headache and a beer. I watched the movie a while back and I can‘t tell if I‘m remembering that or if I‘ve actually read this before, and it‘s kind of unsettling because it‘s a weird book. I really I shouldn‘t read it when I‘m not quite with it. Pictured with my unfiltered real life messy weird living room situation.

So I have mixed feelings about this. I don‘t read a lot of horror, but I really liked this for the wackiness and the humor. However, the plot was ALL over the place (you can tell it was self published), and all the offensive language kinda ruined it for me a bit. In context, maybe it makes sense to have it, but I didn‘t feel like it added anything.

My favorite October read of all time! If you want something both incredibly funny and disturbing, this book is the one.

I first read this back in 2006 when it was a web serial. It's still great.

GypsyKat I still need to read this one. Is it October or Halloween themed? (edited) 14mo
LummoxJR Nope, just some soul-shivering horror... with dick jokes and chair puns. You know I'm no horror fan but this book delivers the goods. 14mo
LummoxJR Basic premise: two losers in a dead-end town are exposed to a substance that opens their perception across dimensions and likewise makes evil entities aware of them. 14mo

Spoilers! Geez! A very well written, insane journey of messing with eldritch powers beyond our mortal ken all while maintaining a hilarious tone and sense of humor. Still at times dark without pulling too much mood whiplash and a very clever twist that will have you going back to read and see if you missed the signs along the way. Squidapus found this book had just enough tentacles to keep him satisfied and was solidly consistent beginning to end.

TobeyTheScavengerMonk Squidapus should keep going with this series. Each one is a bit more polished than the last and they all balance dark and funny well. 1y

This book, to date, is easily the most out there, bizarre story I‘ve ever read. But ... it‘s well written and *very* comical. Somewhere in the middle it got so outlandish my attention waned a bit, but it pulled itself together. I listened to this one on audiobook and it was great fun. The narrator conveyed the humor and character personalities quite well. If you‘re open to something weird, give this one a go.

It‘s like the television show “Supernatural” had a baby with “ Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” . I laughed out loud at this book and when I‘d read it in public, people would come up to me and say “ wow what a spoiler, does he really die at the end?” Such a good read and I plan to read it again and again until I die.......... at the end 😅

I'm not a big fan of Sci-fi books. However, I loved John Dies at the End. Its such a bizzare, humorous, exciting read. Every twist and turn had me questioning myself. I didn't get my answers until the very end and even then, I was wrong. The characters were flawed but still likeable (unless you have a problem with sass).

For me, I would highly recommend this book. And since now I know it's a series, I'm on the hunt for book 2.
