Cinnamon and Gunpowder
Cinnamon and Gunpowder: A Novel | Eli Brown
102 posts | 67 read | 1 reading | 122 to read
A gripping adventure, a seaborne romance, and a twist on the tale of Scheherazadewith the best food ever served aboard a pirate's shipThe year is 1819, and the renowned chef Owen Wedgwood has been kidnapped by the ruthless pirate Mad Hannah Mabbot. He will be spared, she tells him, as long as he puts exquisite food in front of her every Sunday without fail. To appease the red-haired captain, Wedgwood gets cracking with the meager supplies on board. His first triumph at sea is actual bread, made from a sourdough starter that he leavens in a tin under his shirt throughout a roaring battle, as men are cutlassed all around him. Soon he's making tea-smoked eel and brewing pineapple-banana cider. But Mabbotwho exerts a curious draw on the chefis under siege. Hunted by a deadly privateer and plagued by a saboteur hidden on her ship, she pushes her crew past exhaustion in her search for the notorious Brass Fox. As Wedgwood begins to sense a method to Mabbot's madness, he must rely on the bizarre crewmembers he once feared: Mr. Apples, the fearsome giant who loves to knit; Feng and Bai, martial arts masters sworn to defend their captain; and Joshua, the deaf cabin boy who becomes the son Wedgwood never had. Cinnamon and Gunpowder is a swashbuckling epicure's adventure simmered over a surprisingly touching love storywith a dash of the strangest, most delightful cookbook never written. Eli Brown has crafted a uniquely entertaining novel full of adventure: the Scheherazade story turned on its head, at sea, with food. An NPR Best Book of 2013

This book was FUN. The culinary descriptions were utterly delightful, and the uniqueness of the story was engaging. The gore and violence was a touch outside of my comfort zone, but not too much for me. While I didn‘t agree with everything, it was thought-provoking and the characters were still appealing.

I can't imagine how much research (culinary and otherwise) went into this book. It's a vibrant read. Characters are 10/10. TW: piratical punishment, battle, and gore, plus frank discussion of human sex trafficking (one character is a victim).

Spent yesterday day evening in front of the fireplace. I think I have new favourite reading place.

I've done my morning yoga and am pretty proud of myself, that's three days in a row. 😉

Now breakfast and books.

14 hours 27 minutes, so far.

#24B4Monday #readathon @TheReadingMermaid @Andrew65

Sarah83 Is it a real fireplace? Or only a show? 😊 9mo
Kaye Good times , and also good for you on the Yoga. It‘s really hard to get into an exercise routine of any kind and stick with it. I think if you include it as just another routine part of your day, like getting a bath, eating, etc, it‘s easier to just do it . At least for me it is because I don‘t enjoy exercise. If I make it part of my daily things needing done, then I‘m better at sticking with it. Good luck 🍀 9mo

Finished yesterday.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This wasn‘t anything like I thought it would be, but I enjoyed it even more because of it. The descriptions of Wedgewood‘s meals for Captain Mabbot are sumptuous and mouth watering, but what I really enjoyed was watching their relationship develop. It‘s not an in your face romance. @monalyisha has so many excellent choices on her #freakyfriday list I had a hard time narrowing it down, including several I hadn‘t heard of. These are the ones I‘m hoping to get to. I think I‘m most excited for the tagged book! It has pirates!! 🗡🍽
Practical Magic and The Raven Boys I already own copies of but haven‘t read yet. The Neil Gaiman, White Oleander and The Interestings were already on my TBR list thanks to litsy posts. 👇🏻

MeganAnn @monalyisha I might also sneak in Tuck Everlasting or Bridge to Terabithia by reading one to my son for his bedtime book if he‘ll allow it or as a family audio book for our trip to Minneapolis towards the end of the month. 😊 1y
Maike Cinnamon and Gunpowder is so wonderful! 1y
monalyisha “Tuck Everlasting” might be a better family read/listen. I LOVE “Bridge to Terabithia” (to the point where it inspired my only tattoo!) but it‘s so heartbreaking. I‘m excited that you‘re interested in so many of my choices! 1y
monalyisha I will say that “Weathering” is a little slow (which is intentional/fits the story); it‘s all about the writing/individual sentences, not so much about stuff *happening.* That‘s not always everyone‘s cup of tea, but I obviously loved it. 1y
ferskner You got a great list! 1y

Pickpick

"The year is 1819, and the renowned chef Owen Wedgwood has been kidnapped by a beautiful yet ruthless pirate." Lady Pirates, Food, Adventure, and Great Writing. There's a love story too, but it's more subtle, not sickly sweet or sexy. A thourougly enjoyable read.
