I have had a run of DNF books this one the latest. I did not like Insomnia by Sarah Pinborough or The Lioness by Chris Bohjalian or Breathless by Amy McColloch. I am sure these are all great books evidently not my cup of tea. Still looking for something…

The Rumor: A Novel | Lesley Kara
Panpan

The MC overhears some gossip at her son‘s school and repeats it, setting in motion a sequence of events. TBH I thought the plot was preposterous. For one, without giving anything away, the MC moves back to the town where she lived as a teenager and seems to know no one who lives there. Also, not to be indelicate, but too many mentions of excrement that seemed gratuitous. Again, you can find tons of books that are better

This is an old-fashioned story about two rival mob factions in Rhode Island, the Italians and the Irish. Lots of crosses and double-crosses makes for an exciting read in The Godfather style although not as epic. (Providence, I just read, is the most bookstore-friendly city in the US, followed by my native Hartford). The author‘s style is very easy and while the book is a bit cliched, I enjoyed the story.

EvieBee This sounds great! Is it part of a series or a standalone? 3w
LKK526 @EvieBee I believe it‘s the first of a trilogy. I saw him interviewed and he said he was retiring but had already completed the 2 following books. He‘s written a number of books but came to my attention because of that interview 3w
EvieBee Okay good to know! He‘s an author I wanted to try because a friend recommended a series. Can‘t remember the name but seemed like a Western? But this theme is right up my alley. 3w

I teetered between so-so and pan. You can see my decision. I thought the plot was convoluted and the author switched the POV without warning. Sometimes I was half-way thru a paragraph before I realized it was a different character so similar were the voices. Also no time frame was given but cell phones and the internet are not mentioned. If that reflects on my intelligence so be it, but again, there are better books.

WJCintron They changed POVs halfway through a chapter? That must be so confusing! 3w
LKK526 @wjcintron Sometimes the next paragraph would be someone else speaking 3w

I stumbled on this book on my Kindle for$3.99. I‘ve read others that were inexpensive and could see why. This was a surprise. Paul, the MC and narrator is not above lying to make himself look better. Without stumbling into spoilers, he gets involved with a family that may just be his match

The Caretakers | Amanda Bestor-Siegal
Mehso-so

An American au pair in Paris is accused in the death of her seven-year-old charge. Did she do it or not? Six women tell their stories, which all intersect at some point with the accused. Misunderstandings and missed connections abound. I don‘t know what to make of this book. I liked but also felt “meh”. This is the first time TBH that I have a hard time writing a review since I started posting.

I hated this book. An older professor and his grad student girlfriend go to the Maryland shore for a romantic weekend. Each has a secret agenda. What happens is so drawn out, almost bordering on the comical, at least for me, if I didn‘t know better I would call it satire. It‘s not, so take a hard pass. However, respect to the #MeToo movement

Devastated by her mother‘s death and not sure she wants to stay married, Katy goes to Positano, Italy - the trip intended for both her and her mother - alone. This is a lovely story with an undercurrent of sadness. I couldn‘t put it down. I wanted to buy a ticket for Italy immediately!

Through a series of ridiculous occurrences, Claire, or Cece as she becomes known, winds up in Marrakech at the palace home of Paul and Talitha Getty. She crosses paths with some of the biggest icons of the day. Cece is like the Zelig of the hippie era. She seemed awfully unaware of the times even for someone from a small English town and it seemed like the author put her in contrived situations just to name drop. Almost a pan

The Lifeguards: A Novel | Amanda Eyre Ward
Mehso-so

Three women each has a 15-year-old who is a lifeguard. One night the boys find a girl‘s body in the so-called green space where this upper middle class neighborhood can enjoy the cool pools as escape from the Austin, Texas heat. The plot centers around who might have something to do with the death. I give this a so-so because the women seem like stock characters that we‘ve all known before. It‘s an entertaining read for just a fairly written book

The assassination of JFK is the backdrop to this excellent novel. Frank Giudry works for the most powerful mob boss in New Orleans. Frank knows too much about the mob‘s involvement in the assassination and is running from his boss. Charlotte Roy, with her 2 children, decides on the spur of the moment to leave her dull life in Oklahoma for California. Their fates collide. This is not a conspiracy theory book just a nail biting story.

It‘s not a spoiler to say that a murder occurs in the very first line of this book. It‘s not a thriller. Two teenage girls are in love with one boy. It‘s a character study of people adrift. The story is told from several female points of view. I think the reader will have a hard time liking any of these individuals and I thought the ending was a little too pat. This is a book you can probably read in a day.

bthegood Thanks for the review - put on my TBR - like the idea of a character study and quick read - 🙂 2mo

I wanted to like this book but I was pretty ambivalent about it. The characters, while individually portrayed, not cookie-cutter, just didn‘t interest me. I don‘t want to say too much about what I didn‘t like so as not to spoil it for others. It centers around murders committed in the ‘70s and a rich girl who may have been involved. She‘s in her ‘60s now and decides to tell her story to a true crime vlogger who has her own issues.

I wavered between giving this a thumbs up and a so-so. It wasn‘t what I expected -not sure what I did expect- but in the end I decided I liked it . The story centers around an old folded map you could get at any gas station maybe 70+ years ago. The map is very rare. There is a mystery and a little magic and you just have to know what is so special about this map.

I really liked this book and not just because it takes place partly in West Hartford, Connecticut where I am from. It‘s a twist on Christie‘s “And Then There Were None”. I am always nervous about inadvertently spilling spoilers (alliteration, please…) so I‘ll just say it was a fun read.

The censorship of books is disconcerting. If you don‘t want to read something don‘t, but don‘t abrogate my right to so so. No earth shattering observations here but needs to be said. The only way a book can hurt me is if you hit me over the head with it. Apologies to those I didn‘t tag
