The Night Circus
The Night Circus | Erin Morgenstern
The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des Rves, and it is only open at night. But behind the scenes, a fierce competition is underwaya duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their mercurial instructors. Unbeknownst to them, this is a game in which only one can be left standing, and the circus is but the stage for a remarkable battle of imagination and will. Despite themselves, however, Celia and Marco tumble headfirst into lovea deep, magical love that makes the lights flicker and the room grow warm whenever they so much as brush hands. True love or not, the game must play out, and the fates of everyone involved, from the cast of extraordinary circus performers to the patrons, hang in the balance, suspended as precariously as the daring acrobats overhead. Written in rich, seductive prose, this spell-casting novel is a feast for the senses and the heart.

After 50%, it got more interesting and easier to read. But, I'm not going to pretend to like the prose. Because in the end, I don't think I understood anything.

jlhammar You are not alone! This book didn't really work for me either. 2w
lumbricuslibri @jlhammar yeah, the majority seems to like it so I read through the end but was just disappointed. 2w
lumbricuslibri I wanted to like it but it wasn't for me. And there were some good quotes, too! 2w

sarahbellum I wasn‘t a fan either when I read it a few months ago. Too much flash and not enough substance. And waaaay too much whining about not knowing the mechanics of the competition 😩 2w
lumbricuslibri @sarahbellum yes! Exactly! 😞 2w
Linear I audio listened to this at night laying in bed. It was one of those books that makes me think of a story teller speaking. If that makes sense. When I was little my mom would read Hans Christian Anderson fairytales at night like this. And it reminded me of that. So it was soothing and I figured it out as its read like an old fairy tale. 1w
Linear The story is also circular. It ends at the beginning... it ends at the start of the story being told. I happened to also love this tagged book for how it's written like an old fairy tale. And a lot of people couldn't get into that one either lol. 1w
lumbricuslibri @Linear thanks for sharing! I did get that and it makes sense to me that there's a storyteller. I guess, ultimately, I just didn't like the story being told—not for me. Still interested in checking out Vassa in the Night, though. Thanks again! 😄 1w

I'm enjoying this book but I've been reading it for 4 days now and I just got past 50%. It's not readable for me.

I suppose I just contradicted myself. Sigh.

Prairiegirl_reading I thought slow, slow, slow. I didn‘t get much further than you and gave up. 2w
lumbricuslibri @Prairiegirl_reading it picked up for me after this mark but I still didn't really like it in the end. 2w
Prairiegirl_reading @lumbricuslibri lots of people love it but I just couldn‘t get through it. 2w

Esquire has curated a list of the 50 best fantasy books, and I was surprised by how few I've finished (6) and how many I've DNFed (more than 6, and three in the cover photo alone). So, what are your thoughts on this list? Anything that didn't make the cut that you think should have? And should I give Night Circus a third (4th?) try?

https://www.esquire.com/entertainment/books/g39385874/best-fantasy-books/

Soubhiville Huh, I don‘t love this list. There are a few on there I agree with, but lots I don‘t. Probably everyone would write this list differently for their own tastes, but I would have expected to have liked several more. 2mo
Traci1 @Soubhiville it's funny cause I thought oh this will be a great list to pad my tbr (not that it needs it), but then I was like, huh... if they love so many that I couldn't get through then maybe I shouldn't be taking tbr notes from them. I feel like there were several notable author omissions, but I guess it's just all subjective. 2mo
Laughterhp I‘ve read 12 or 13 of these, bailed on a few others and A LOT I‘ve never heard of! I feel like I always see these best fantasy lists and some always have the same books and others are very different. 2mo
TracyReadsBooks I have read, and liked, many of the books on this list but don‘t necessarily agree with everything the author picked. Adam Morgan is a great reviewer, he has founded several review sites including the Chicago Review of Books, but definitely comes at genre, which he generally likes, from more of a literary point of view. No argument with his top two though, that‘s for sure. 2mo
Traci1 @TracyReadsBooks I haven't read The Fifth Season, but it's on my tbr. I agree with LotR, too. 2mo

This was a really interesting idea and story, but it just wasn‘t for me. It was fantasy which isn‘t really my style. It was about two magicians that were forced to compete and ended up falling in love.

I really wanted to like this one. And I did like it, for the first third or so of the book. Beautiful world building and compelling set up. The incessant questioning of, “What are the rules?! When does the game end?! Why are we doing this?!” had me begging “when does this BOOK end?!” It was all flash and no substance for me. Way too long and hand wavy.

Ruthiella I agree. It was pretty but there really was no story...just oodles and oodles of description. 3mo

I really wanted to like this book, the setting was amazing. I thought it had such great potential, but I wanted more to it. There were mysteries, but not much depth to them. The characters didn't have much behind them. I never really got to know them. The concept was interesting, but I felt it could have been done better. The writing style itself was good. The way the story was arranged and put together was unique, I actually really liked that.

I really liked this. It's slow paced but sometimes I like that. The language got a little flowery at times but as a whole was beautiful and imaginative. I especially loved how the two timelines finally meet and you fully understand what's happening. The plot unfolds SLOWLY. It's full of mysteries and begs of the reader to take your time, digest what you've read.

It's one of my last lazy days - school starts Monday! I think this book is kind of perfect for me right now; I'm about 200 pages in and it's mostly been set-up but INTERESTING set-up. It's taking its time and I'm enjoying that, in this liminal space between holidays and classes.

Also, Minerva has become part of our holiday decor.

CBee Love that wreath! I almost made one this year but didn‘t have all the stuff 🤷‍♀️ 4mo
TheatreSpaz @CBee I had SO much trouble finding a wreath I liked, then I walked in the front door of a store and saw this hanging across from me and was like "THAT ONE". I really want to make my own! There's a Michael's nearby that I frequent, might hit them up for supplies. 4mo
Soubhiville What a great photo! 4mo
CBee @TheatreSpaz I found pom pom makers on Amazon and a wreath frame too, but I also have this problem where I start things and never finish 😂😂 There‘s always next year! Or heck, maybe I‘ll just get the stuff and make it anyway. Doesn‘t have to just be for Christmas! 4mo

Beautifully written and creative!! I have had this book for a while but did not read it until now. Don‘t know why I held it off probably because of those praises and of this kind of genre not being my usual type.
