Are you more afraid of a shadowy beast or real racial violence? Rust belt myth intertwines with America‘s refusal to see the violence perpetrated on many generations of black women in this compelling tale of kidnapped girls & facing evil in the woods. Vivid, twisty, thought-provoking & damn scary! Highly recommend. #horror #racism #strongfemalecharacters #5stars

I talked myself into doing a photo reading challenge thing - and obviously we start with the TBR...

I lowkey don‘t particularly believe in setting them because I hardly ever follow through but these ones are also on my #BookSpin list... so maybe some will get read?! TBD!

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I like your shelves. 3y

Have you ever tried to spell your name with book titles?

I got a little stuck on the letter N but found one eventually ☺️

The first book in middle-grade girl detective series, and it was fun. I loved the deadpan narration throughout and the blink and you'll miss it humour. Very understated but will appeal to the sarcastic oddball tween (or adult). Friday's personality doesn't quite come through as vividly as, say, Flavia's in the Flavia de Luce series, but I'm looking forward to reading the rest and getting to know her better.

sisilia This sounds fun! 4y
batsy @sisilia It is. Such a nice break from the heavy reads :) 4y
batsy @thegirlwiththelibrarybag I scrolled down the book page and remembered that it was you who brought this to my attention! I really enjoyed it :) 4y

thegirlwiththelibrarybag I‘m glad! Also recommend the authors podcast - she reads one of her stories a week. Mostly standalone stories but some chapters from the Friday Barnes and Nanny Piggins series. I especially enjoy her retelling of the 3 little pigs. 4y
Abailliekaras My daughter likes this series so I‘m going to look up Flavia de Luce. 4y
ravenlee I really enjoy this series. Unfortunately my libraries only have the first four so I stalled there. 4y
erzascarletbookgasm Looks like a series I would have enjoyed if I‘ve discovered it when young 👍🔍 4y
batsy @thegirlwiththelibrarybag Oh, nice! Thank you! 4y
batsy @Abailliekaras I really enjoy the Flavia series :) 4y
batsy @ravenlee Oh, that's too bad... It's really an enjoyable read and I hope the others in the series are as good! 4y
batsy @erzascarletbookgasm Yes, I think I'll always be drawn to girl detectives 😁 4y
cherylmorton My son reads these books over and over. I‘ll have to check out the authors podcast 4y
rubyslippersreads Looks like fun. 😊 4y
batsy @cherylmorton Oh that's so cute! I would have done the same if these books were around when I was younger :) 4y
rubyslippersreads @batsy I just started this; after Lucy Gayheart, I need something much less intense. (edited) 4y
batsy @rubyslippersreads I hope it does the job :) 4y
rubyslippersreads @batsy Actually, it‘s a very nice break from real life in general right now. 4y
batsy @rubyslippersreads 100%. That's probably why I enjoyed it so much. 4y

Originally this story was an award winning short film. It was eventually turned into a picture book. The book is a biography of Lily Todd, the first woman to design and fly an airplane. It shows how difficult it was for a woman to be recognized in that business. However, it also shows how perseverance and believing in yourself can take you far. It is a good pick for a read aloud to clarify some vocab and main ideas for students. #ucflae3414sp20

ShardaeP ESOL: Provide biographies of significant men and women from different countries (Lily Todd is an important american figure, but this book can be the start of learning about other important figures from different cultures).
UDL: 1.3 offer alternatives for visual information (play the award winning short film that preceded this book). It can be found on https://www.kristinayee.com/films.html

DrSpalding Yes! You‘ve selected English learner strategy 28. Universal design principle 1.3 works well! How exciting to have an award winning short film to complement this text. 4y
DrSpalding The animated short is fantastic! What a wonderful addition to this post. Thank you! I watched the whole thing and I am fascinated by stop motion animation. Beautiful! 4y
ShardaeP @DrSpalding I thought the short film was very creative too 😃 It was interesting to learn about Lily Todd, as I do not recall ever learning about her before. 4y
DrSpalding Same. I had not heard of her either. I learned something and loved the animated short film! I can see why it won. There is an excellent app called Stop Motion animation that you can create more simplistic versions of movies like this. 4y
