The House in the Cerulean Sea
The House in the Cerulean Sea | Tj Klune
Lambda Literary Award-winning author TJ Klunes breakout contemporary fantasy Linus Baker is a by-the-book case worker in the Department in Charge of Magical Youth. He's tasked with determining whether six dangerous magical children are likely to bring about the end of the world. Arthur Parnassus is the master of the orphanage. He would do anything to keep the children safe, even if it means the world will burn. And his secrets will come to light. The House in the Cerulean Sea is an enchanting love story, masterfully told, about the profound experience of discovering an unlikely family in an unexpected placeand realizing that family is yours. "1984 meets The Umbrella Academy with a pinch of Douglas Adams thrown in." This was a delightful look at prejudice, personal growth, good intentions that don't look at the larger picture, and what family really means.

The people who are othered are magical beings, giving a clear focus for othering (they have scary magic powers!) and yet that's still very clearly not a valid reason. This illustrates the difficulty in making local changes, vs systematic changes. And all the kids are SO CUTE.

1. I'm always doing an audiobook when I'm at the gym. If I'm reading a super heavy/intense book, I also have a light read on standby for when I can't sleep at night. So I'm usually reading 2-3 books at one time.

This man, right here, has to have the best energy of anyone I have ever met. I didn't want to take too many pictures but he was always up and moving and laughing. He told some great stories and we got a lot of "secret" information that I'm super pumped about!!! I can't remember the last time I had so much fun just listening to a person. I had such a great time. If you ever get the chance to meet him....DO IT!!

This wonderfully endearing fantasy novel made my heart explode. Klune creates a setting and characters that are irresistibly lovable, and his virtuous message that it is ok to be different is beautifully rendered here. The additional themes of belonging, chosen family, and the inherent value of children as people are especially poignant. By the novel‘s end, I found myself guffawing through happy tears. Thank you, Mr. Klune, for all this color. 5⭐️

My reading goals for #superseptember! This is a mix of #LMPBC, #bookspin, #camplitsy catch up, and library books. I love making lofty goals for the readathons and challenging myself to read instead of stare at a screen (an exception for the new season of GBBO, though! 😋). Other goals are to get organized for #scarathlon2022 (my first one) and get my early bird points! Happy Reading all!

This was such a cute story! It definitely gave me Mrs. Peregrine vibes. Such likable characters, and a beautiful ending!

The only downfall, for me, was that it felt a little juvenile at times. However, a truly lovely book! I would recommend to anyone.

I do agree with most reviews that this is a wonderful read! It‘s light, nicely paced with interesting little characters. It is a mix of Harry Potter and Peculiar Children in my opinion 😅 Though LGBTQ, the author didn‘t over do the romance. In fact it was with good taste and I liked the way it slowly evolved. Such a memorable read! #roll100 @PuddleJumper

A touch of sci-fi, a bit of a love story, dystopia vs almost utopia, and magical beings all wrapped up in a great story. So many things about acceptance of differences and learning to open up to love. Really enjoyed this book and I will offer it as a choice book for my students (high school age).

A tale to swoon over. Utterly delightful in every way. The House in the Cerulean Sea is like a warm embrace or a cozy blanket on a chilly day. A feel-good novel, set on a whimsical island inhabited by an array of eccentric orphans with rather splendid gifts. Klune strikes again with a marvellous tale of finding a place to belong. Absolute must read! These characters carve themselves a home in your heart! And it's delightfully romantic too ♡ Xx

This is between a pick and a so-so for me. I‘ll admit I wasn‘t too thrilled with this book for some reason. I was struggling to get through the ebook at one point, but then I switched to the audiobook and I was able to finish. Daniel Hemming does a fantastic job at voicing the characters.

I don‘t think I‘ll be reading any of his other books. I heard mixed reviews on UTWD, so I don‘t think this author is for me.
