Okay, so they think all of this is most likely cancer instead of a side effect of the radiation she had a year ago. She‘s going to have a radiation treatment tomorrow. In about a week, she could start getting the strength back in her legs, but the neurological symptoms could stay like they are now. The goal is to get her to where she can come back home. It‘s not the best news, but there is some hope. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

GingerAntics Don‘t even get me started on how horribly Frankenstein treated his “monster.” I know the joke about Frankenstein not being the name of the monster, but I honestly think he was a monster to his creature. Had he treated this creature he had the hubris to make in the first place with a modicum of humanity, it wouldn‘t have been a monster at all and the book would have been so much shorter. #MaryShelley #Frankenstein #audiobook #Wednesday 1w
Prairiegirl_reading I read with a number of years ago with my book club and also didn‘t enjoy it. One thing I remember about our discussion was one woman complaining about the doctor and “he had the vapours every five minutes.” I just always imagine him on a fainting couch. 🤣 1w
GingerAntics @Prairiegirl_reading 🤣😂🤣 I love that! He really did have the vapours constantly! Like, dude, buck up! You get all these like dead body parts and you‘re fine, but then this thing you‘ve made expects you to show him some humanity and QUEUE THE VAPOURS!!! 🙄🤣😂🤣 1w
IriDas Sorrý about the dx. I hope she can come home soon. And, yes, Dr Frankenstein is the real monster, which was the point of both versions. Bad parenting, bad science, they all lead to bad ends, I guess. :) 1w
GingerAntics @IriDas I think that makes the confusion between Frankenstein and Frankenstein‘s monster funnier. 6d

I have just discovered the joys of the Netflix show Wednesday this week… so now I am reading books that remind me of Wednesday!
#MaryShelley #Frankenstein #audiobook #Wednesday

GingerAntics I read this back in 2016 for a seminar on antiheroes… but these first few chapters… I don‘t remember them at all. 2w
IriDas Is this the same version you read? There are two. She changed quite a bit of the first part with the second version. 2w
GingerAntics @IriDas I genuinely don‘t remember this beginning part. I mostly remember the dog sled and the monster running along side, maybe chasing him. I just have this very vivid mental image of that part. 2w
See All 9 Comments
IriDas Oh, you mean the letters to the sister? 2w
IriDas Here‘s a good article about the two versions: https://stanforddaily.com/2018/11/29/frankenstein-and-its-transformations/ But if it‘s about remembering the sledge, it might just be what stuck in your mind the most. I‘ve read it multiple times, both versions, and I can see that being something a person would keep over the letters. 😊 2w
GingerAntics @IriDas I remember painting this very vivid imagine in my mind of it, and over time that‘s all that has remained. It does seem like he‘s writing letters to his sister… I think. This is the first time I‘ve listened this on audio, so I‘m thinking it hits a little different. 2w
AnnCrystal Wednesday 👏🏼🤩👍🏼 the first season was too good! Hope to one day catch the second season 📺💝. The first season was filmed in Romania and the second was filmed in Ireland. Don't know why, but I found this to be interesting. 2w
GingerAntics @AnnCrystal I did not know any of that! They released season 2 in two parts. 🙄 The second half drops 9/3, so I‘m trying SO HARD to hold off until then to watch any of season 2. 🫰🏻🫰🏻 (edited) 2w

This might be a good book to read for some people. If you‘ve never thought about these things before or never thought about the other side of these issues, then this could be a good book. As far as this being a philosophy book, it‘s mostly her thoughts on the issues with a little philosophy sprinkled in here and there. It‘s just not a philosophy book in and of itself.
👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

GingerAntics The people who need to read it, that would actually get something out of it, won‘t read it. The people who will read it have already had these thoughts and will likely find that she‘s coming at the issues from a level of privilege that may be normal for the UK (though I doubt it), but is far above the average in the US. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 2w
GingerAntics It‘s not a bad book, it just wasn‘t what I was expecting from a philosophy book, and not what my philosophy group was expecting or looking for. #ArianneShahvisi #ArguingForABetterWorld #Philosophy #AdventuresInPhilosophy #DeadPhilosophersSociety 2w

AlaSkaat I‘m way behind, just finished this yesterday. I‘ve been lost somewhere inside my days, trying to climb back up to life now. The book was alright… I agree it was mostly her thoughts… she seemed to tell us how SHE sees the world rather than building actual sound arguments. She did talk through important issues but it felt more like a ‘listen to me!‘ than a proper exploration of the issues… 2d
GingerAntics @AlaSkaat 100%! I get that feeling. I hope you‘re coming back to the surface now. 2d

This is a wonderful introduction to Tunisian Crochet. Her videos on YouTube complement it perfectly. When in doubt, she‘s also made a video so you can see exactly how to do it. If you like crochet, but want to try something a little different, this is the book for you. Also, check out TL Yarn Crafts on YouTube. Her videos are so relaxing and encouraging, plus she‘s well caffeinated!

Sace I‘ve tried Tunisian crochet and it always curls so badly. I think my tension is too tight. 😢 3w
julesG You've mentioned this book at the right time, I just bought some Tunisian crochet hooks to get started. 2w
See All 9 Comments
GingerAntics @Sace she actually talks about that in some of her videos. It‘s actually how it naturally is. Blocking and/or adding a crochet border stops the curl. It‘s because the simple stitch is always pulling from the front. It‘s natural and no big deal. 2w
GingerAntics @julesG wow! I highly recommend her YouTube videos, too. You will be making amazing things in no time. 2w

Tia Levings is an amazing, strong, powerful, courageous woman who went down a very dark road, all in the name of doing the right thing and being a good person. I could not stop listening, I was just so compelled. I first heard about this case from the show How I Escaped My Cult. The author was one of the people interviewed for the show. This is much more of a deep dive into not just the case, but the church, and the Leonard family.
👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

GingerAntics It is very well written, and I really enjoyed the discussion of how Lucas‘s and Christopher‘s father deconstructed from the cult and started to realise the truth about his former church. I feel like the true perpetrator of every atrocity that ever happened in that church, Tiffanie, got off with one of the lightest sentences. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 3w

I finished this yesterday, but I needed some time to process before I could write down my thoughts.

This book is intense. It‘s a quick read, but there is so much to take in. Racism, antisemitism, sexism, eugenics, high control religious groups - the roots of our obsession with thinness are multifaceted, but none of them are good.
👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

GingerAntics When valid, well done research shows that body size isn‘t the health predictor it‘s made out to be, a woman with decades in the field is taken down by a man from a completely different field, and our doctors just keep telling us we all need to lose weight. Some doctors are asking questions, but far too many of them are not. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 3w
GingerAntics This is such an important read for everyone, but if you are trying to deconstruct your own past with diet culture and/or disordered eating, this book is absolutely vital. GingerAntics @TheBookHippie 100% agree… we need to be aware of the system issues, we need to uphold our own personal ethics in doing what we can, and support/encourage the people in a position to chip away at the system. 3w
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie the thing about how much meat Americans eat? Ouch! The “we‘re so manly all we eat is meat” sect of toxic masculinity come to mind as massive offenders! This memoir is heartbreaking and beautiful. This is such an important book for all Americans right now. It offers food for thought and important truths we all need to spend time wrestling with. We must witness the abuse, coercion, and harm in the past in order to prevent building the cults of the future. The only ones against this are the world-be leaders of those cults, so start reading and never stop.

This is on the longer side and it does seem to float along, but it is worth hanging in there. I read reviews that seemed to think of this as a history surrounding the satanic verses, or that it would be better to read the Bible instead. This has nothing to do with either of those things. This is literally a satire, painting in vivid color and detail the dangers of closed minded, absolute belief systems.
👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

GingerAntics If that offends you, you‘re probably close minded and hold absolutist beliefs. This magical realism at its finest. Please stop taking it so seriously. I beg of you.

GingerAntics @TheBookHippie so did I. It took me a minute to get everything straight because there are A LOT of characters and it‘s not necessarily in chronological order, but once I figured it out, I loved what he did here. 1mo

Goethe's Faust | Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe

This was so enthralling and wonderful to listen to. I highly recommend it. It has the weight and feel and Shakespeare, but the language is far more modern. The translator did an amazing job of keeping the rhythm of the original German poetry in the English.

Bookwomble And Samuel West and Toby Jones are both such great actors. I bet they were good in their roles! 2mo
GingerAntics @Bookwomble absolutely brilliant! They really brought it to life. I adored every minute of it. 2mo

I don‘t know why, but this stuck out to me. I keep saying it in my head now… especially when the word London pops up in the story.

So this is the evangelical answer to the poor. Not “what you do to the least of these…” just this. Oh my god the rage is strong within me! Hobby Lobby and The Signatry must be so proud. I would love to be a fly on the wall when they find out either their sky daddy isn‘t real, or they are on his 💩 list.

Sace Wait. Wut? And how does this square with prosperity gospel? 2mo
GingerAntics @Prairiegirl_reading it‘s from the “He Gets Us” commercials. 2mo
GingerAntics @Deblovestoread right? Absolutely disgusting. 2mo
GingerAntics @Sace I think they‘re saying poor people need to stop being upset that they are poor because of injustice and iniquity, because Jesus was poor too… and probably if we prayed more and voted republican more we could be rich too! 2mo
Bookwomble Rich religious people usually gloss over the whole "camel through the eye of a needle" thing ? 2mo
DrSabrinaMoldenReads I know about Jesus helping the poor but not about Him struggling. They just make things up to justify their actions. 2mo
GingerAntics @Bookwomble of course! They cherry pick what they like about the Bible and ignore the rest. 2mo
GingerAntics @DrSabrinaMoldenReads it would probably change their tune REALLY quick to tell them that Jesus being poor is very much a Catholic idea. The Catholic Church still teaches that Jesus‘s family was really poor, despite nothing in the Bible saying anything to suggest that. They were just an average Jewish family of the time. These are the same morons who want to start another sectarian war, so telling them might actually shut them up. 2mo
Prairiegirl_reading @GingerAntics sorry. Canadian here. I don‘t know what that means. Who gets us? Jesus? Who is putting out these commercials? Or should I say propaganda? 2mo
GingerAntics @Prairiegirl_reading yeah, Jesus gets us. It‘s this whole campaign paid for by a bunch of anonymous evangelical organisations, but mainly “The Servant Foundation” which is more ominously known as The Signatry and the lunatics behind hobby lobby. 2mo
GingerAntics @Prairiegirl_reading it is 100% propaganda 2mo

DrSabrinaMoldenReads @GingerAntics I‘m Catholic. But that‘s Ok! I‘ve only known Catholics to stress what I said about Him helping the poor and that is in the Bible. Following Jesus‘ teachings, this is why Catholicism is the largest religious charitable organization in the world. (edited) 2mo

This has been on my TBR since 2019. I started it after finishing Herod while donating plasma today. I‘m already 77% of the way through. It‘s fast paced. It‘s compelling. It has the feeling of Shakespeare, with far more modern English. This translation has done a marvellous job of keeping the rhythm of the original German poetry. 100% recommend so far. Would love to do this as a group read at some point. I just wanted to share this brilliance.

GingerAntics Thanks Dr. Quinn for putting this book on my radar! #Goethe #Faust #DrQuinnReadingList #poetry #play #classicliterature 2mo

julesG Had to read and dissect/interpret it in school. Both parts. And, if course, we had to look at other works where a character struck a bargain with the devil. 2mo
GingerAntics @julesG he is a German author, so that makes sense. Yeah, we get Shakespeare and if you were lucky, you MIGHT have been introduced to a little Mark Twain. That‘s about it. Everything else was modern. Then again, this is America. No one would stand for a man striking a bargain with the devil. It might corrupt the children. 🙄 (edited) 2mo
julesG 🤣🤣 2mo
julesG I think we read some Marlow too. Apart from Shakespeare. 2mo
GingerAntics @julesG oooh I read some Marlow in grad school. I‘m trying to remember which ones now… 🤔 🧐 2mo

Life of Herod the Great | Zora Neale Hurston, Deborah G Plant

Pickpick

I have mixed feelings about this book. My favourite parts were the introduction and the commentary. For some reason I expected this to be nonfiction. Once we got to the fiction part, it took about half the book for me to really get into it. I just wanted more of that intro. I was into that from the jump. Still, a good book and certainly a different way to look at the character of King Herod from the Bible.

GingerAntics Taking so long to get into it very well could have been a me thing. Take this book for a spin and see what you think. #ZoraNealeHurston #TheLifeOfHerodTheGreat

GingerAntics This chapter has just confirmed for me that we need to stop believing white men - the richer, the less creditable… also, himpathy is my new favourite word!!! 2mo
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics I feel himpathy is a. brilliant word …… ALSO white men- They know they cannot be in power unless they take everyone else‘s power away. So that‘s their daily task. 2mo
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie right?! And they assume everyone else is going to treat them as crappy as they‘ve treated everyone else all this time. It‘s a confession. They know how crappy they‘ve been. 2mo

I‘m a bit late on this. My June reading was pretty sad, seeing that this was a reread (and my audiobook has the book twice, which is why I read it twice. Seeing that this is already on my reading bracket, I‘m not even going to add it again. 💁🏼‍♀️ Sorry reading bracket.

RosePressedPages I had a bummer June for reading too! Hopefully July brings better reads 2mo
GingerAntics @RosePressedPages fingers crossed. I‘ve had a hard time getting into books lately. The stress of the real world certainly isn‘t helping. I‘ve also had multiple epic reads that have each put a successively bigger hiccup in my reading habits. 2mo
