I think the hype monster might have ruined this for me. It‘s not a fantasy book but a sentimental, Hallmark style Rom-com. Which is fine but not what I expected!! 😬

Caroline2 @squirrelbrain Thank you so much for getting this for my birthday! I‘m sorry I didn‘t love it but it was a nice, easy read which is just what my brain needed right now! ☺️ 2d
TrishB I thought it was going to be sentimental so enjoyed as that. Sometimes hype and expectation do spoil it! 2d

Found and decorated our tree today with all four kids. This might be our last year with a full nest, so it was really special that work schedules, etc. didn‘t interfere this year. Had a delicious family dinner. We aren‘t finished decorating the rest of the house, so there are bins everywhere, but now I‘m snuggled with the pups (one at my feet and one behind my head), in front of the tree, with this enchanting book. ❤️📚🎄🥰

I didn‘t know anything about this book before diving in, besides that so many readers seem to love it. Now I can understand why it‘s so special! It‘s a whimsical, colorful, heartwarming tale of acceptance, belonging, and found family. Read this one when you need a hopeful reminder of the good in humanity. (I thought the audiobook narration was also amazing!) 🎧

I write this review through tears. I was so touched by this story. So much magic, yet equal amounts of reality and true life lessons. I absolutely loved almost every character, and want so badly to visit this magical land (or one like it). I hope to make some positive changes in my life due to the lessons I learned in this book. I am a better person for having read it…..

Such a sweet story about finding where you belong. My favorite part was when all the children went into town for an outing. I love how Linus has so little self worth yet always seems to say the right thing. This book made me feel happy.

What a wonderful book filled with magical children and a magical island. I fell in love with the children in this book. Tallia and Luci are my fave. The story within a story in this book about finding yourself and accepting people for who they are and not what they look like is the real gem. I give this book 10 out of 10 for its exquisite story telling.

This is easily one of my new favorite books. The story is funny, heart-breaking, heart-mending, romantic, and just all-around beautifully written. The characters are delightful, unique, and magical in every sense of the word. I recommend that absolutely everyone read this book, and I'm going to spend the next few months figuring out how to fit it into my freshman English curriculum.

@Chrissyreadit I am very excited about your #NewYearWhoDis list & I can‘t make up my mind where to start. Possibly the tagged book, which I have been wanting to read so badly but don‘t own yet (the same with Jane Fairfax & Ophie‘s Ghosts). The other 5 books pictured here I do own but have not gotten around to reading yet, so I think you‘ll give me the push I need. The remaining 8 books on your list look great too! 📚📚🤗📚📚📚

I am so stinkin‘ excited to dive into my match‘s list for #NYWD22. @MeganAnn and I both included the tagged book on our lists and I read - and loved - The Outsiders earlier this year, so I already know we‘re in good company. The titles pictured here are my goals…and I cannot wait. 🤗💜📚

monalyisha I love the one Sarah Gailey book I‘ve read (Magic for Liars) & want to read more by them! I tried to get my Book Club to read the tagged this coming year but they didn‘t vote for it. I‘ll have to read it by my lonesome, I suppose! I‘ve got a feeling they‘re totally missing out. (edited) 3w
MeganAnn I love that we both have an extra overlap book we‘ve already read. The Outsiders I originally read in 8th grade for class and loved it. It‘s one of those books that‘s stayed with me. This summer, I read it again with my son who is a 7th grader and he loved it as well. We had so much fun discussing it together. 😊 These are all Excellent choices! I‘m so excited to see your thoughts on them. 🎉 3w
MeganAnn @monalyisha Magic for Liars almost made it on my list too, but I enjoyed Upright Women Wanted a teensy bit better (it‘s like gold medal and silver medal reads… both amazing but I decided only one for each author could win). I really want to read River for Teeth as well. I‘m fact, those two books made me want to read ALL of their work. 3w

MeganAnn Almost all of these books are #blameitonlitsy reads for me! How Long Til Black Future Month was on @BarbaraJean ‘s #newyearwhodis list last year. She also included Magic for Liars which I loved & it prompt me to pick up Upright Women Wanted when I saw it at the library. Last Night at the Telegraph Club was my choice for an #lmpbc round of queer reads & Today I Am a Boy was @Reggie ‘s choice for the same round. 3w
MeganAnn And A Memory Called Empire was a #bbbbc read and it was also the first book I finished in 2021, even though I started it last December. 3w

The entire time I was reading this book I was expecting a sad ending for all the reviews I have seen said it made the readers cry. I am so glad it wasn‘t a sad book. This was a middle grade plot with YA humor. I loved the children and all their dark jokes, and Chauncey especially because who just randomly comes up with an amorphous green blob who wants to be a bellhop? 5🌟

I may not live near a cerulean sea, but I certainly have access to a mossy tree ?

I am not a fan of the fantasy genre, but this story about a bearded girl, forest sprites, a boy who has always been called a monster, and the son of the devil himself drew me in and didn't seem all that far "out there."

It takes a talented writer to pull that off!

There's so much cuteness in this book, but it doesn't get annoying! Great characters, with a lot of very nice development. The themes and issues are very recognizable / relatable, but are told in quitte a refreshing or interesting way. I really liked how there was some romance in the story, without having the story be completely about it.
This book touched me and I completely loved it!

Any suggestions for 7-9 year old girls for a Christmas gift book?

Bookzombie I‘m not sure about this age group. Tagging a couple of Littens that might have suggestions. @LibrarianRyan @4thhouseontheleft I know your daughter is older, but thought you might have some suggestions. 🙂 1mo
LibrarianRyan Oh boy can I make you a list. But some standards questions first. What type of girl is she: girly girl, sporty etc. what is her fav movie or show. Fav toy. And current fave book. Don‘t need all of those answered but at least one. And reading level. I know Covid put some students like my nephew behind. 4w
Jennaree3 @LibrarianRyan she is kind of sporty...she's in scouts and likes riding horses. Not sure what her fav show or movie is! I've never asked. Reading level is probably advanced for her age shes 9. If it's an adult book, her parents could always read it to her, also. Thanks! 3w
See All 11 Comments
LibrarianRyan @Jennaree3 hates girl. This I can do. Start with Misty if Chincotegea it‘s an older series but it‘s a classic based in real horses. I don‘t like this book but kids love it. It‘s short and easier to get into than standard horse classics like Black stallion or Black Beauty. 3w
LibrarianRyan Then you might try the Guardian of the Heard or Riders of the realm series. Pegasus. Oh yeah. Now to get away from horses try the Track series by Jason Reynolds. The first book is about a boy but it doesn‘t matter. It‘s excellent. Sticking with sports try Roller Girl. Think the movie Whip it foe a younger audience. Plus I‘m pretty sure it‘s a graphic novel. Then there is the winter born home books by ally carter. Ally carter write some of my 3w
LibrarianRyan Fav you g YA books. The Gallagher girl books are awesome and while “clean” (at least I think they are) they are YA. Star fish by Lisa dips is told in verse and is on all the lists. I have not read my copy yet but I hear great things. Wanna try mythology but not ready for Percy Jackson try Thunder Girls. Norse mythology (there is also Godess girls but I find kids know little about Norse mythology). 3w
LibrarianRyan You can‘t go wrong with Raina Telgemier but she does show up on banned books lists because some of her books have LGBTQ characters. Smile is a nice place to start. A modern classic is True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle by Avi. Still one of my fave books. 3w
LibrarianRyan Want a little fantasy try the troubled girls of dragon more academy. Or unwritten. Eickriordan is known for his series but he just published a standalone retelling of 20000 leagues under the sea called Daughter of the deep. 3w
LibrarianRyan Now for some diverse books (sorry I didn‘t ask about that ahead of time). The first rule of punk. One crazy summer, this one is actually a series. From the desk of Zoe Washington. Ghost squad, Melissa (George). The author has asked for the title change. Efren divided. front desk. Class act (is the sequel and I am trying a blank on book 1. Tide song just came out. I loved this graphic novel. And to end, espically ISL you want historical 3w
LibrarianRyan Anything by Alan gate, or Jennifer a. Nielsen. Sorry for the overload but I wanted you to have options because you never know why the bookstore will have. If none of these sound right, tell me more and I‘ll hit it again. 3w
Jennaree3 @LibrarianRyan thank you so much!! 3w

Charming. High expectations and it did not disappoint. #audiobook narrator was good but would have been helped by 1-2 others given the number of characters and need for variety of voices. Disappointed that he chose to go with a countrified “hick” accent for the fellow who held prejudices against those different from him. Using that accent played into a stereotype when not stereotyping was a major message of the story.
