Everyone you look to nowadays has no time to enjoy the things they loved to do at leisure. With the everyday hustle and bustle of the world, we've all learnt to multi-task or leave some tasks out of our daily routine. While it may not entail a lot for some, many people often end up cutting out their hobbies such as reading books. However, nowadays, many people also like to cram their free time with other tasks which are more important for them. One of the main reasons why Kindle and e-books have been so popular is because they gave books a mobility which has never been available. People could forgo having to tote around the bulk of a heavy book and the extra space was saved up by a sleek device which was capable of storing enough books to fill a mini-library. Pushing the genre of the mobility of e-books that new technology allows, Amazon.com has now introduced Audible Audio Books which give a new spin to the more common cassette books which were famously popular in their day and age. However, once the cassette player became obsolete, these books had faded out of sight. With their re-resurgence Audio books now give you a revamped version of cassette books which can be accessed through your smart phone. With many bestsellers easily available, you can find out with the help of this e-book how you can access Audible Audio Books whether you're an Amazon member or not.

Emily92Bibliophile @Joseph5 Scribd is a good app. Not free ( in audiobook world you can‘t get a good free app that has recent audio books). Scribd is $8 a month but definitely worth it. Audiobooks and eBooks. Your local library would be a good option for free audiobooks. 1mo

I really loved this #AudibleOriginal. I put it off because I thought it would be fashion advice or something from Tan France (whom I adore but more cuz he‘s awesome rather than an interest in fashion). This is hilarious. Laugh out loud hilarious. Bonus points awarded for featuring my favorite drag queen, Shangela. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Okay. I have yet to read/listen to a book on Audible. I love having the tangible item while I read, I don‘t even think I will enjoy a kindle since I like to hold the book. But audible sparks my attention, as I see y‘all on walks and different activities while getting to “read” too! I just wanted opinions, and if you listen to audible but still read when you have the chance too. Just opinions and thoughts on it, thinking about starting. Thanks!

britt_brooke I read all formats and love them all for different reasons. When I started listening to audio a couple of years ago, I was so skeptical, but I really love them for multitasking. I had to train my brain to listen and retain so I started with author-narrated memoirs (because they‘re usually great) and rereads. I think those are good starting places. (edited) 2mo
britt_brooke I have an Audible account, but I also listen to a ton of books through my library via the Libby app. 2mo
Macker11 @britt_brooke thanks for the input ! I figure it‘s a 30 day free trial, why not? But I was trying to read up on it, I didn‘t understand, is it $15 and you get 1 credit ? So one book a month? 2mo
See All 17 Comments
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego I mainly read but I recently started listening to books to be more active. I'm enjoying it so far. 2mo
britt_brooke @Macker11 Yes, that‘s correct. And you also get access to sales when they occur and there are usually some good books for $5 (which is super cheap for audio). You can also return a book if you didn‘t like it and get your credit back. 2mo
Macker11 @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego @britt_brooke so it‘s $15 a book, don‘t you breeze through them? 2mo
IndoorDame I read all 3 formats. The more I read audio the more I like it. Some come from Audible, but some from Libby (which let's me borrow them from my local library for free). If you're just trying to see if you like the format I'd try that. 2mo
britt_brooke @Macker11 Yes, sometimes, but regular price is usually $20-30. I usually go only for new releases on Audible. Never use your credit for a book that‘s less than $15. You may also want to look into Scribd. You pay a monthly membership but you don‘t own the books. It‘s like a library with no wait. I think you can borrow multiple books a month just not at the same time. @booksnchill can tell you more about it, if you‘re interested? She uses it a lot. 2mo
Macker11 @britt_brooke hmm. I have a good used bookstore by me and I can get books super cheap, so that makes me scared to spend that much on an audio. I love the idea of being active while still reading, just not worth that extra $ maybe. It would be cool if you paid x a month and could read unlimited. I go through a book a day, and normally don‘t pay over $3 for a hardcover 😔 2mo
britt_brooke @Macker11 I totally hear ya. I am usually pretty thrifty with my books, too. I could never get all of my audiobooks from Audible. It‘s just too expensive. The library is where I get most of mine .... and they‘re free! I cannot recommend Libby enough. 2mo
Macker11 @britt_brooke thanks for the info! I will check it out! 2mo
LibrarianRyan if you don't know yet if you like audiobooks, you might try your local library download service first. And if you want to get away from Amazon, Libro.fm is similar, supper fun, and supports indy book stores. 2mo
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego Depends how long the book is. Most good books cost more than that, but you get 1 credit a month with your subscription. I use that to get the longer and more expensive books. They had a Canada Day sale where some books were on sale, but I'm not sure how often that sort of thing happens... If you think you'll go thru a lot then maybe just borrow from the library. 2mo
Booksnchill Thanks for the tag @britt_brooke - I like Scribd. It is 8.99 monthly. You don‘t “borrow” any set number and it is books and audiobooks. You don‘t own them and they can only be accessed while your membership is active. I love it but be aware that the newest releases sometimes get “embargoed” and they tell you the date they will once again be available. I am not a member of audible but I do buy audiobooks there occasionally. Libby and Hoopla also👍 2mo
Macker11 @Booksnchill thank you! I appreciate your input ! 2mo
JoyBlue I love reading w/my ears! I binge audio from my library via Overdrive/Libby.

I hope it‘s not just me, but the choices for the free Audible Originals this month seem particularly uninteresting. Not sure I‘m even going partake this month...if I have to chose I guess it will be Dinosaurs and NASA, which is unfortunate because nonfiction is my least favorite genre. ☹️

Prairiegirl_reading It‘s not just you. They are particularly bad this month. 4mo
rretzler @Prairiegirl_reading So glad to know I‘m not the only one. The couple that I have taken the time to listen to already have not been great. First the credit debacle, now this. 4mo
Prairiegirl_reading @rretzler it definitely isn‘t the selling feature they thought it would be. 😕 4mo

rretzler @Bookwormjillk The only month that ever really thrilled me was when they offered The Dispatcher by John Scalzi, but I already owned it. 4mo

julesG And, my #GuiltyPleasure, sizzling romances by Lauren Blakely. 😁 6mo
Aimeesue The Number One Ladies Détective Agency series, read by Lissette Lecat. Anything read by Stephen Fry or Tim Curry - velvet voices! 6mo
AmyG Insomnia by Stephen King.....brilliantly read by Eli Wallach. 6mo
Bookies Should support indie bookstores. Libro.fm has digital audio that does. 6mo
baes I listen to the Outlander series while I read physical copies of the books. She‘s so good at the different accents and gives each character their own voice. Really brings the books to life. (edited) 6mo
Sharpeipup Anything read by Jim Dale such as 6mo
Susanita I really enjoyed this on audio: 6mo
riversong153 Omg...The Night Circus was excellent on audio! 6mo
Cathythoughts I really like this one on Audible 6mo
youneverarrived Born a Crime, The Choice, Blackout & In Order to Live are all brilliant non-fiction on audio. 6mo
marleed The full cast of Daisy Jones and the Six is the only time I‘ve ever recommended that if someone read the book they also give the audiobook a listen. 6mo
marleed @Sharpeipup I recently listened to the Night Circus read by Jim Dale and had to keep reminding myself I wasn‘t inside a Harry Potter book. I have Jim Dale stereotyped - in a good way! 6mo
Birdsong28 This is really good on audiobook 6mo
Cinfhen Kevin Hart is probably hilarious @Birdsong28 I‘m definitely going to look out for that one ☝🏾 thanks for the suggestion 6mo
Cinfhen I picked up Yes, Please on Hoopla @Susanita and People of the Book is one of my favorite actual books 📖 6mo
Cinfhen I could see Daisy Jones being excellent as an audio choice @marleed 6mo
Birdsong28 @Cinfhen It is such a good book, it's just like listening to him do stand up. I only got it for 99p as it was in Audible's Christmas daily deals one of the best audiobook I have heard. 📚📖 6mo
BarbaraBB I don‘t know if it is available but if so, please get Cassandra at the Wedding. I am soooo sure you‘ll love it (and I can‘t send you my copy as it is part of my NYRB collection) 😃 6mo
Cinfhen You‘re so sweet!! It‘s not available but I‘ll keep my eyes open @BarbaraBB 😘😘 6mo
toofondofbooks Ready Player One narrated by Will Wheaton, The Kingkiller Chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss, Anything by Neil Gaiman bc he usually does his own narration, The Gentleman Bastard Series, most Stephen King is excellent, anything narrated by Bronson Pinchot, Bernard Cornwell's Saxon Tales, Swan Song by Robert McCammon, Chaos Walking Trilogy by Patrick Ness 6mo
Cinfhen Thanks so much @toofondofbooks I‘ve been eyeing a few of these books 🤩🤩 6mo
Centique @Bookies not available in my country unfortunately. Many of us on Litsy aren‘t North American. 6mo
LeticiaToraci I usually look for new releases that are cheaper to get for the Audible monthly fee than the current book price and listen the probe. One I liked was a series by Jessica Cluess. 6mo
LeticiaToraci The name of the trilogy was Kingdom on Fire, YA with fantasy and very well written. 6mo
LeticiaToraci Another was a retelling of Frankenstein, The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein. 6mo
Bookies @Centique I bet there‘s a smaller option besides audible though. Hummingbird digital media? Anything? 4mo
Centique @Bookies nope. The biggest of our independent bookstores has a link to Kobo but there‘s a very small selection of audiobooks available. Libby is a good alternative but bookstores don‘t get any benefit of course. 4mo

I just need to vent a little about something that Audible is doing. A couple of days ago, a message appeared on their website claiming that they were changing the way credits worked to give members more flexibility. Today I received an email stating that they were improving my Audible Credits experience. This is indeed NOT the truth. I am on the Annual Platinum plan and have been for over 14 years. This means that each year...(cont.)

rretzler ...I pay an annual fee to receive 24 credits which I can use at any time. Prior to this change, I had the ability to rollover up to 12 of those credits to be used in the next year. Which means that in years I didn‘t listen a lot, I wasn‘t forced to use my credits on books that I may not have wanted. And in years where I listened more, I usually had some rollover credits that I could use. That‘s flexibility, IMO. (cont.) 7mo
rretzler ...Now Audible is telling me that the credits I receive on the first day of my membership will expire one year later on the first day of the next years membership. So I have to use all of my credits within the one year period or I lose them. How is this giving me more flexibility and improving my experience? They also say that now I will receive a monthly email showing how many credits I have. I can already see how many credits...(cont.) 7mo
rretzler ...by looking on the website or app. Why would I need an additional email to tell me what I can see just by logging in. Not to mention that the web or app will have updated information. Ugh-I am so mad that Audible is trying to take a benefit away from me and trying to tell me it is a good thing. I want to let everyone know how terrible I think this is, especially those who are also affected by it. 7mo
See All 17 Comments
EadieB @rretzler You as an already member should keep the same benefits that you started with. These so called new advantages should be for people just signing up. You should ask them what gives them the right to change your benefits mid-stream! Not right at all! 7mo
rretzler I would agree, but just to play devil‘s advocate, the “contract” is only a one year contract, and I become a member again each year when I renew, so I suppose they have the right to change terms and I have the right to decide whether or not I want those terms each year. What galls me is that they‘re trying to insult my intelligence by taking away a benefit and telling me it gives me flexibility and improves my experience. NOT! 7mo
SleepyDragon It sounds to me like they are going to lose a lot of long time subscribers like yourself. It doesn't improve your experience; it pads their profit margin. It is insulting that they don't think subscribers are smart enough to realize that. 7mo
rretzler @SleepyDragon I‘m a retired CPA and that was my initial thought, but upon thinking about it, I‘m not sure that they gain that much of an advantage financially from it. If someone doesn‘t use their credits, Audible doesn‘t get any additional revenue, but I guess they save by not having to pay a royalty to an author. I can‘t think of any other fixed costs that they would be saving and it‘s not like they get more money plus according to most... 7mo
rretzler ...authors, royalties are next to nothing. On the other hand, with the change, they have to reprogram their accounting system for not only the new way credits are accounted for but also how revenue is recognized. And then there is the cost of programming and sending out monthly emails about credits. I‘m not sure what the change is getting them. 7mo
Angeles I really dislike Amazon. My husband uses audible but I buy and rent my audiobooks through downpour. They have a smaller selection but I like them better 😁 7mo
tpixie @rretzler oh wow. I haven‘t read my email yet. I also am a platinum member since forever. I really like being able to roll over my credits. My membership is coming up here also. But I still think it‘s cheaper than buying audiobooks through Apple or other sites. How disappointing 7mo
rretzler @Angeles I‘ll have to check out downpour. I am a big Amazon and Audible fan, so this will be a hard decision for me. Amazon has saved me a lot of money over the years and made my life easier in many ways. Perhaps if Audible had presented it differently it wouldn‘t have made me quite so angry. 7mo
rretzler @tpixie Rolling over credit does take the pressure off, I think. My younger son is mildly dyslexic and prefers audiobooks to print, so I always keep a few credits in reserve for his school reading. Since I never know when or what, it will make trying to plan for using credits more difficult. I agree Audible is cheaper and I really like the Whispersync feature, which i would totally miss if I switched. I‘m sending them an email to share my thoughts 7mo
tpixie @rretzler my 4 kids have dyslexia too, so audiobooks definitely are important! I will email them, too. I also use apps from my library to download audio and ebooks. But I also like to have access to a book when I really want to read it (edited) 7mo
rretzler @tpixie Have you heard of Bookshare and Learning Ally? If you have a qualifying print disability, like poor sight or dyslexia, you can sign up and borrow audiobooks for free. I haven‘t pursued getting my son signed up yet, but I think it‘s time after this Audible credit debacle! 7mo
tpixie We us learning ally ( I sometimes use it too on my last students account- she has used it for nursing school ). The tough part is the readers are not near as good as Audible. But they read text books and novels if you can plan ahead even a semester/ summer ahead and let them know what books you need in theory they will get somebody to tape it for you but it takes a while so you have to plan ahead. I‘ve never tried bookshare. (edited) 7mo
tpixie I just got a email yesterday about a class action suit with Audible did you get one? 7mo
rretzler @tpixie I did get the email. So that explains a lot - someone who didn‘t know how to figure out what was going on with their credits lost some and sued. ☹️ so we have to lose our rollover because of that. In the entire time I was a member, I always knew how many credits I had and when they expired and never lost a credit. So why punish the thousands like me who were also able to figure out the credits. 😠 (edited) 7mo

Question for Audible users: can more than one device be used to access an account? For example can both my husband and I use the account on our respective devices?

intothehallofbooks So far we‘re up to 5 devices on one account with the permission of Audible! My kids and husband and I all use it on our individual devices-we were advised to do this after I chatted with their customer service to see if I could get some sort of family plan package. 😊 7mo
Tamra @intothehallofbooks that is awesome! What are the 2 “originals” that are free a month mean? 7mo
AlaMich My wife and I each have an Audible account but we can “share” all our books. I‘m not sure if that‘s different from what the other commenters are describing. 7mo
saresmoore I‘m glad that the question has already been answered for you! My husband and I share and I love it. As a member, you can also return any book for any reason, even if you listened to the whole thing. 7mo
Dogearedcopy @tamra Audible originals are exclusively produced content for Audible. At the beginning of the month, they offer 6 (?) to chose from and you can pick 2 as part of your subscription for free 🙂 7mo

sprainedbrain For fantasy, try this one... or any book narrated by Steve West 😍 9mo
JeansBookshelf For fantasy try the Iron Druid Chronicles by Kevin Hearne. I love it. Hounded is book one 9mo
Birdsong28 I loved the tagged book as it felt like he was just doing a stand up set rather than reading his book 9mo
Whimsical.Curiosity @sprainedbrain I've heard great things about that book! 9mo
Birdsong28 Also Davina Porter makes the Outlander series 📚📖 9mo
Whimsical.Curiosity @Birdsong28 that sounds right up my alley, thank you! 9mo
Whimsical.Curiosity @JeanMartin_82 I love anyone by the name Atticus. 9mo
Whimsical.Curiosity @Birdsong28 I have to be carful with Outlander. There are some scenes I just can't stomach. 9mo
Erinreadsthebooks The Poet X was an excellent audiobook experience! 9mo
Whimsical.Curiosity @Erinreadsthebooks Thanks! I'll add it to my list. 9mo
Kaye Memoirs. : When We Were the Kennedys , I‘m Down, Freak Show Without a Tent , Kookooland , Southern Education of a Jersey Girl, Girl Named Zippy , Crapalachia , Driving Miss Norma , Jackie‘s Girl , The Ride of Our Lives , Wildflower by Mark Seal. 9mo
Soubhiville I‘d second The Poet X. I love Robin Hobb on audio- she‘s got a ton of chunkster fantasy books. Ready Player One is great with Wil Wheaten Reading it. Patrick Rothfuss‘ books are also incredible on audio. Don‘t miss Born a Crime! 9mo
cherinium Definitely Born a Crime. @Soubhiville is right about that and Ready Player One. Also, I recently listened to To Kill a Mockingbird with Sissy Spacek and loved her interpretation of Scout. The Martian and Artemis both have fantastic narration, as does It. I also recently loved the narrator for Beartown. 9mo
Victoriahoperose I really liked The Woman in the Window by AJ Finn on audio. A discovery of witches by Deborah hardness was great. I liked After Anna by Lisa Scottoline, A life in parts by Bryan Cranston and with love from the inside by Angela pessl! 9mo
Whimsical.Curiosity @Soubhiville @cherinium I love Ready Player One and had no idea Will Wheaten did the audio narration. That makes it even more tempting. 9mo
Whimsical.Curiosity @Victoriahoperose I've heard great things about Angela Pessl! I've read Woman in the Window and it was fantastic. 9mo
Susannah I totally agree with @Birdsong28 regarding Davina Porter‘s narration of Outlander. I only listened to the first book, but she was phenomenal. She also narrates The Mists of Avalon. 9mo
TheSpineView I loved the Illuminae series on audio. It was a full cast which I love. If you like Will Wheaton he narrates other books. Especially for John Scalzi of which I loved Lock In 9mo
Soubhiville Oh @TheSpineView I didn‘t know Wheaten did any Scalzi books! Obsessively going to reserve all of them now! Thank you! 9mo
Whimsical.Curiosity @TheSpineView @Soubhiville well now I have to jump on the party wagon and listen to them too! I love Will's voice. 9mo
Whimsical.Curiosity @TheSpineView I love the thought of a full cast narration 9mo
TheSpineView @Soubhiville You're welcome! 😊 9mo
TheSpineView @Whimsical.Curiosity 😊 9mo
TheSpineView @Whimsical.Curiosity I love the different voices. It is much better than the narrator just doing voices. 9mo
Whimsical.Curiosity @TheSpineView although I haven't listened to my first book yet, I can see this being much more enjoyable. 9mo
ReadingRover The best audiobook ever!!! It‘s hysterical. 9mo
DannyHattan The whole wheel of time series is great on audible 👌🏻🙌🏻😊 9mo
WhatThePuck The Book of Lost Things has by far been my favorite. If you want weeks long listens definitely give Outlander and A Discovery of Witches a try. Maybe you should start the Grishaverse with Six of Crows! I can probably lend you the first 3. I don't have Six of Crows. I do have Shadow and Bone. 9mo

Audible members *.
Your free originals are out. I‘ve picked my 2 already. Here are all 6.

https://www.audible.com/ep/audible-originals-member-benefit?ref=a_ep_audibl_c9_b...

BlameJennyJane Yay! I love it that the first of the month and their *first Friday* release rule are the same this month! 9mo
Kaye Yea pretty neat ! @BlameJennyJane 9mo
Traci1 I turned off Audible during the government shutdown just to have one less bill to worry about. I'm trying to decide now if I want to re-subscribe or wait. The originals this month may push me to do it. 🤔 9mo
See All 6 Comments
Kaye @Traci1 Well, it‘s up to you. I thought this month‘s selection was better than the first few. I wouldn‘t want you to do it if finances are tight. Audible is the thing I eliminate when we have other huge bills to pay. I chose Dodge and Twist. And Folsom Untold . If you‘ve never gotten the free OneBook , I‘d be happy to send you either for free. No problem. 9mo
Traci1 @kaye oh we're fine now. Honestly we never really had any issues, other than being ticked about the whole mess. It was just the worry of it going on long term. 3 or 4 months of no pay would definitely have been an issue. Audible was the only thing I cut off just because it seemed unnecessary and easy to re-up. 9mo
Kaye Yes I understand. It‘s scary when you face no job. My husband worked the same job for 38 years, then the boss decided to get rid of all the Older Guys. So he was 56 and in the unemployment line. Scary ! Thank goodness he found another job, but it took a couple months. Not very many people want to hire old folks. I‘m glad things are better for you now. 9mo

I told myself I had a FREE library membership where I could get my audiobooks. And that line of thought worked....until it didn‘t. I caved. 🤦🏻‍♀️

KathyWheeler I use both. Sometimes the library doesn‘t have the audiobook I‘m in the mood to listen to. That said, because of the library, I‘m not always buying extra Audible credits. 9mo
Cspen113 @KathyWheeler I was wondering about how expensive this would end up being for me. Are there good deals on Audible? Most I saw looked like they were just below the cost of a hardback. 9mo
KathyWheeler @Cspen113 There are good deals; they have daily deals and they have sales. You can also purchase extra credits if you don‘t want to wait until your next credit rolls around. It‘s generally $30something to get 3 credits; last month though it was $20something. 9mo
Cspen113 @KathyWheeler Thank you for the information!! 9mo

Am I the only one who signs up for audible whenever there's a deal going on? I just don't listen to audiobooks enough to justify paying $14.95 every month for a regular membership.

To get this deal, check out the link: https://www.audible.com/ep/audiobook-deals

Melismatic You should look into the Libby app - it goes thru your library and has tons of audiobooks for free. 11mo

Has anyone else tried this series? Well, it was free so the worst thing that can happen is I don't like it, right?

In other news, I really think audiobooks have kickstarted my reading again. I'm not declaring the almost year-long slump over, but perhaps I'm recovering.

Ashley_Nicoletto Congrats on your maybe recovery! I‘ll keep my fingers crossed for you. 🤞🏼 13mo
