Really cannot recommend this book enough 🥰🥰
Definitely worth reading
It provides the real life events happened in Ireland for 60 years, including dark and bright, pleasant and disturbing events. Sometimes, I laughed sometimes I shed tears. More often I needed to pause a bit to let the unsettled feeling to be settled then continued.
Like a person, Ireland also has different faces beyond the Troubles because this was real life they lived in.

jlhammar I agree, this was fantastic! 2w
SamAnne Started this one and agree it‘s good! 2w

Reading has been slow this year until this book! Wow, I enjoyed it very much😍😍
Hesitant to open this book as disappointed by Malibu.
But it turned out very very good.
It probably is better than Dasiy.

Highly recommend 😃😃

Eggs Agree - Malibu was meh but Soto worked!! 1mo
BittersweetBooks I‘ve been hesitant to read it too because I was so disappointed by Malibu Rising. But just requested it from the library, thanks for sharing! 1mo

I expected nothing before reading this book. Surprisingly, this is an interesting and serious book. The author‘s writing makes people, conversations and activists in this book vivid. I like this book despite it being a bit ……strange to me….

SamAnne Yeah, I wasn't a big fan either. The writing and the story felt tired to me. 3mo

I know this book has good ratings and is beautifully written but is also dragging too long and really not my type….🥲

Emily John Mándela may have just become one of my favorite authors. Recommend Station Eleven and recommend this book as well. I am not a sci-fic fan but the author has her way to draw my attention and make me to enjoy her books. Would not say that the basic ideas of the story itself is something no one ever had but the author indeed beautifully make the story unique. ?

Yes, another book about the history of the Trouble in Northern Ireland.
Given that I have become obsessed with Northern Ireland history and bought many books related Northern Ireland after reading “Say Nothing”, I have myself read one of them each month to learn more and forget less.
The tone of this book is quite neutral and the author offers concise and clear history!

Such a wonderful coincidence that I read two books about the history of Northern Ireland in a row and in such a perfect order (previous one is The Yellow House). I Love this book very much.
Now I learn the history related to the Cause, partition of the Ireland, the Trouble and the Good Friday Agreement and become a bit obsessive of the history thereof and want to know more about all that!!
Highly recommend!!

Such a enjoyable, beautiful and informative book. This may be the first book I have read about Ireland. Like the description about Ireland from this book “She‘s beautiful on the outside but troubled deep down.”
Also, have to admit the Peaky Blinders” may be one of the factors that I enjoyed this book so much.

Like what the author says “There is nothing inherently wrong with specialization. We all specialize to one degree or another.” However, we should also stay curious and keep learning to expand our knowledge of different fields.

Like the author‘s advice: “don‘t feel behind; “Compare yourself to yourself yesterday, not to younger people who are not you.”; and
Everyone progresses at a different rate, so don‘t let anyone else make you feel behind.”

Thought about quitting this book after the Oscar event but then voted against it so I finished this book but did not enjoy it very much.
This is a good lesson that don‘t easily believe in what people say (and write) and don‘t blindly worship someone because of what he/she said because what matters is what they do. Especially no one is flawless. That said thank this book for introducing me the poet “I'd rather see a sermon than hear one any day”.

This book gives me something to reflect on and provides goods points as to our communication and the way we view others and ourself. My big take from this book is trying not being judgmental to others and myself!!
l always have mixed feeling about manual books, like this one(my own definition)because they can sometimes put me to sleep but sometimes also provide useful and positive advice. That said, I do find this book worth reading!!😛😛

I love surfing although not good at and just a two-hour-once-a-week-surfer so this book had my attention for a while. I relate to those surfing life as described in this book a lot but feel those barbarian days as described in this book unimaginable. I wished I had such surfing life but not sure if I could handle the barbarian days. Maybe I am bias but I like and recommend this book. 🤟🤟😂

This book indeed offers some useful tips to form a good habit and would definitely benefit readers having such need. That said, I would not say that I enjoy reading this book which, I think, is not really a negative comment on this kind of book. 😅😂

Beautifully written and creative!! I have had this book for a while but did not read it until now. Don‘t know why I held it off probably because of those praises and of this kind of genre not being my usual type.
It turns out this book indeed lives up to the hype and I like it!! Hopefully there would be a movie.

I am aware that this book won Goodreads award in the memoir category which is the reason I looked forward to it. However, this is just not for me, just not. Being an Asian I can relate to the strict discipline of an Asian mother and to some of Asian culture and my country was mentioned in the book, but I just can‘t get into it.
But it is the interesting part of reading books. Everyone has different thoughts on a same book.

I like “A gentleman in Moscow” and I like this book more. So impressed by the author‘s elegant writing style and his way to revive every character. However, this book is not perfect. For example, the last few chapters are not as good as previous and the narrative of the eight year old boy is too matured. That‘s said, over all I still like this book!!🤪🤣
