Rosaline Palmer Takes the Cake
Rosaline Palmer Takes the Cake | Alexis Hall
40 posts | 41 read | 30 to read
Fans of Casey McQuiston, Christina Lauren, and Abby Jimenez will love this scrumptious and sweet romantic comedy from the "dizzyingly talented writer" of Boyfriend Material (Entertainment Weekly)! Following the recipe is the key to a successful bake. Rosaline Palmer has always lived by those ruleswell, except for when she dropped out of college to raise her daughter, Amelie. Now, with a paycheck as useful as greaseproof paper and a house crumbling faster than biscuits in tea, shes teetering on the edge of financial disaster. But where theres a whisk theres a way . . . and Rosaline has just landed a spot on the nations most beloved baking show. Winning the prize money would give her daughter the life she deservesand Rosaline is determined to stick to the instructions. However, more than collapsing trifles stand between Rosaline and sweet, sweet victory. Suave, well-educated, and parent-approved Alain Pope knows all the right moves to sweep her off her feet, but its shy electrician Harry Dobson who makes Rosaline question her long-held beliefsabout herself, her family, and her desires. Rosaline fears falling for Harry is a guaranteed recipe for disaster. Yet as the competitionand the ovensheat up, Rosaline starts to realize the most delicious bakes come from the heart.

Witty banter, a love triangle, lots of cakes, quirky characters and Alexis Hall's unputdownable writing.

BennettBookworm Did you have a fave between this and Boyfriend Material? 1mo
julesG @BennettBookworm Since I also already read Husband Material, I'd have to say Husband Material. 😉 It's hard to pick between Boyfriend Material and Rosaline Palmer. I might have liked Rosaline Palmer a bit more, but that's because I had read BM and HM beforehand. 1mo

Currently listening to this.

Lots of swearing and a primary school child that knows exactly which four-letter words she shouldn't say in school.

First book in Winner Bakes it All series. Second book is out in October.

It took me a few chapters to settle in, but I really liked it. I am a huge bakeoff nerd and I loved all of the references. The cast of characters is true to the bakeoff vibe and generally really likable, except the antagonist. It does a great job of having a bi main character in a straight-presenting relationship without erasing her queerness. I‘ve marked my calendar for the sequel this fall, and will be reading more Alexis hall in between!

Ran to the bookstore tonight to get a stack of cozy mysteries for my Grandma‘s birthday and oops I found the pride display. Don‘t worry, I got books for her too 😆 I can‘t decide what to start first! Fortunately it is a bojillion degrees in the midwest right now, so there should be plenty of time to read tomorrow. #queerbooks

I completed this book for December's #BookSpinBingo just in the knick of time! I enjoyed this one, Rosaline took charge and the love interest was so cute. I absolutely love The Great British Baking Show which this book did a fictional take on so I really liked that aspect as well, although wish there was a bit more to it.
Glad to knock this one off of my TBR!

@Andrew65 Loving looking back and finding my #12Booksof2021 photos! #May

Not just Romance but also a story of personal growth and learning to stand up for yourself. I'm Childfree by Choice. Stories featuring Single Mum's and Children aren't usually my thing but I LOVED Amelie! Smart and funny. She taught me the meaning of sesquipedalian.
Also loved:
Baking Show Contestants weren't cutthroat but everyone trying their best. And Recipes!

A fun British rom-com, especially if you like Great British Bake-Off. The way one situation played out felt cringey and I wish it had been written differently, but otherwise I found myself laughing a bit and really liking it. Photo because I was picturing Candace as Rosaline the whole time.

I really liked this book: authentic #bisexual rep, quirky characters, witty British dialogue, baking (yum!), and a sweet love story with a working class hero and single mom heroine. The way Rosaline's bisexuality is an important part despite the love interests being cis men resonated. This book is marketed as a romance, which it doesn't fit as Rosaline spends 80% of the book dating a "wanker". I want much less Alain (wanker) and more Harry (hero)!

CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian Also forgot to mention the setting of this book is a Great British Bake Off like reality show. So great! 10mo

Another enjoyable rom-com! If you're a fan of The Great British Bake Off, you'll love this. It felt a bit long to me and I thought the competition took up a bit too much time, but I loved the variety of characters with different personalities. Rosaline's daughter was my favorite character, both precocious and childish in equal measure. Without giving too much away, I hated the audiobook voice for one character, but perhaps that was intentional.

BookNAround Saw your name in yesterday‘s Shelf Awareness. Congrats! A good friend of mine is a sales rep there. 🙂 10mo

Mixed feelings. Loved the writing style and voice. Despised several key characters (as I was intended to) which made it an unpleasant reading experience for many pages. The trigger warning on page 1, while understandable, made me tense for the entire book, just waiting for the inevitable. I also felt it took too long to get to the good parts..

My apple pie, on the other hand..🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻

In any case, I still want to try Boyfriend Material now.

I read this book as I sat next to my dad in the ICU during his last few days. It was exactly what I needed. Pure escapism and good book therapy. I love the GBBO and I loved the lgbtq+ theme/characters. I had moments with frustration regarding (spoiler alert, but this is a romcom so you will have seen this coming) her initial love interest and was so happy it ended up the way it did.

Smrloomis So sorry for your loss 😔 but glad the book helped during that time 9mo

Had a fabulous Sunday afternoon. Read while my hubby did patio work.

This is a so-so because Rosaline annoyed the crap out of me. If this wasn‘t set up as a season of GBBO, I probably would have bailed.

I don‘t want to say too much since it‘s our #LMPBC read. If you want to see some of my thoughts, you can check out my goodreads review.

Hall‘s humor is a bit dry, & your eyes may be a bit moist by the time you reach the end…but this book‘s neither over nor underbaked. It‘s just right.

I laughed out loud at some of the witty banter. I raised a sympathetic fist in response to some of the sexual & political views expressed. I nodded in satisfaction at a smattering of sexy details.

I will say that the protagonist‘s daughter is almost *unbelievably* precocious. 👇🏻

monalyisha 1/1: I know smart 8 yr olds but she‘s intense. I think her verbal recall could‘ve been dialed back a scotch. BUT her character was totally adorable. The many layered messages (Hall 100% laminated that sh*t) about bisexuality felt heavy-handed at times…but I think your typical GBBO fan *might* just be learning about some of these views (esp with any nuance) for the first time, so I‘m willing to forgive since it seems to be for the greater good. PLEASE GIVE ME ALL THE FOOD COMPETITION ROMANCES TO DEVOUR WHILE I SIT BY THE PUBLIC POOL!

This plot point seems to be everywhere recently and I am here for it. The characters were as sweet as the baked goods they made for their show and I would ABSOLUTELY read a sequel, whether it followed the same characters or just the same show. 🧁❤️🧁

Okay, I was already an Alexis Hall fan, but this story combines so many of the things I love about his writing, examination of class, and Britishness, and well, all with the background of a baking reality show. For Ripped Bodice Bingo can work for friends to lovers, and reality show.

This is not a romance in the traditional sense. It‘s more a story of Rosaline learning and growing into the person she is without worrying about what everyone else thinks.

This book was fantastic. I loved the Bake Expectations scenes because they hilariously aligned with the Great British Bake-off, a show I love watching.

Lauren_reading The last 30% of this book was amazing. We really got to know Harry (who is so good!) and see Rosaline get past the toolbag Alain. I hated that guy so much! It started off slow and with me annoyed with Rosaline (until I thought back on all the dumb decisions I‘ve made), but I grew to really adore this book. 1y
Prairiegirl_reading Definitely more of a rom-com, which is probably why I loved it! It was hilarious! 1y

Well, that was truly delightful. Alexis Hall perfectly captures the Carry On like cheerfully smutty humour of Bake-Off without ever once mentioning soggy bottoms ? The word "innuendar" is a triumph. I liked that the host and judges were reminiscent of, without ever being copies of, the real ones and I loved the gloriously domineering and foul mouthed producer. It's a great romance too, with characters I really cared about ?

CarolynM ☝️At the end there are questions for book club discussion which are by turns serious and silly, as well as recipes written in the voices of the contestant characters. A joy to read from start to finish. 1y

monalyisha Good on you for commenting on the fantastic producer character! I love how she was an asshole but *also* believed Rosaline & stood behind her in AN INSTANT when it mattered most. Not that the villain of the piece was punished accordingly. But that‘s realistic, too, isn‘t it? I like how Hall refused to sacrifice complexity & integrity, showing that the genre‘s got both. 💪🏻 14mo
CarolynM @monalyisha I love Alexis Hall. As well as being a great writer, he's a really decent person who is concerned about things like representation, consent and the individual's right to decide for themselves what is right for them. What could be sweeter than a romance that takes place during a baking competition? Rosaline's life needs a story arc every bit as much as a reality show baking competition does. The first chapter made me nervous that this would be a book where all the conflict rose out of unnecessary miscommunication, but it's absolutely not. The relationships both romantic and otherwise grow so beautifully throughout the novel. It's a wonderful read.

Prairiegirl_reading We‘ve just finished watching all 10 seasons of great British bake off, 4 seasons of great Canadian bake off and all of Nadiya‘s shows and now I‘m having a bit of a bake off hangover. This sounds like it just might fit the bill! 😄 1y
