The Kaiju Preservation Society
The Kaiju Preservation Society | John Scalzi
John Scalzi is the most entertaining, accessible writer working in SF today Joe Hill In New York City, Jamie Gray is a driver for food delivery apps. That is, until Jamie makes a delivery to an old acquaintance, Tom, who works at what he calls an animal rights organization. Toms team needs a last-minute grunt to handle things on their next field visit. Jamie, eager to do anything, immediately signs on. What Tom doesnt tell Jamie is that the animals his team cares for are not here on Earth. Not our Earth, at least. In an alternate dimension, massive dinosaur-like creatures named Kaiju roam a warm and human-free world. Theyre the universes largest and most dangerous animal and theyre in trouble. Its not just the Kaiju Preservation Society whose found their way to the alternate world. Others have, too. And their carelessness could cause millions back on our Earth to die. The Kaiju Preservation Society by John Scalzi is a thrilling, fast-paced adventure set on an alternate Earth perfect for fans of Adrian Tchaikovsky and Charles Stross.

This was the book I did not know I needed. I picked it as the car travel book because I was sure both my mom and son would love it! And we all did. It reminded me a little of Eureka and Jurassic park. I just know it was fun and funny and entertaining. And Wil Wheaton narrates- also fun.

BethM I wonder if the library would have the audio 🤔 I gave up audible years ago bc I outpace it 😂 2w

This was a fun time! Scalzi‘s characters are always a fun source of banter. I love that this book doesn‘t try to take itself too seriously, but also has its own merits beyond just being a parody.

If you liked Red Shirts, this is pretty much in the same vein - snappy, sarcastic characters doing their best in weird situations.

Scalzi wrote this fun, short, sci-fi workplace comedy after being blocked for much of 2020 (as he outlines in the author's note) & it is both an acknowledgement of the strangeness & derangement of the pandemic & the election, & a nice bit of competence escapism in the face of those (these?) troubled times.

A fun but predictable read. This is a good book if you need something easy to break up a reading slump or you just crave something like Jurassic Park.

shanaqui I think it's Scalzi's own afterword that refers to it as being like a pop song, and that's just right as a descriptor! 1mo

I cancelled my library hold on this one for the physical book when I saw that Wil Wheaton narrates Scalzi‘s latest novel. Already I‘m laughing… at a story that opens in New York City at the beginning of the pandemic. I just love John Scalzi, and I love his stories even more when Wil Wheaton reads them to me. Geek heaven over here🤓

I just noticed that the main character of this story basically goes from being a delivery boy to an otherwordly... delivery boy. I wonder if it's a hat tip to “Futurama.“

This was such an enjoyable, fun read. I often can tell how much I‘m enjoying an ebook by how often I check the page number and I was a third of the way in before I even looked at how long the book was. A lovely cast of diverse and funny characters, and I enjoyed the ending, even if parts were predictable (in a comforting way, not a boring way). I would definitely accept a job with the KPS 🦖.

shanaqui Ha, I'm just like that with checking the page count. Even sometimes when something seems like it's right up my alley... still checking the page count constantly. Always interesting to see other people's habits like this! 1mo

This was the book I so perfectly needed. As Scalzi himself says in the afterword, it‘s not high literature, it‘s a pop song of a book, but sometimes a really catchy pop song is exactly the thing you want.

That was an adventure! I am always impressed how Sci Fi authors come up with this stuff. Im not a big Sci Fi reader but enjoyed the storyline that brings in current events and witty- sarcastic banter. MC Jamie lands a job protecting unusual creatures in a different dimension. Lots of science discussions that were not too over my head. It was fun. 4 🌟

I got myself a Paperwhite reader, and it is so much easier to read while eating and such. I've never been much for ebooks because looking at a screen caused eye strain, felt too much like work (I'm an editor), and I didn't seem to retain what I read as well. But I decided to try again (I had a Nook back in the day), and I haven't had any of those troubles with this reader. I'll always be a lover of physical books, but I love this too.

I don‘t read a lot of sci-fi but when I do I prefer something that is cleverly written with a touch of humor. Think: Hank Green, John Marrs, Blake Crouch, Douglas Adams, etc. This was quite a story about giant beings on an alternate earth. The audio is great read by Wil Wheaton.

48/150 This was a low pick for me, I didn't enjoy it as much as other Scalzi novels. I've read enough of his books to get how his sense of humor works, and I found most of this lighthearted fun, but I found the MC and several of the other characters rather annoying. They never seemed to take anything seriously, so the constant wise cracking and pop culture jokes began to get tiresome. 3.75/5

This one certainly had it's moments and I loved the idea of these huge interdimensional beasts but this is more like a short story with a lot of padding.

The author knows how to write dialogue pretty well, but so much of the dialog content is just so trite and uninteresting.

I'd love to see an adaptation of this short book that feels underdeveloped.

⭐️⭐️⭐️☆☆

Fr3NcHtOaSt I liked it for what it was and the whole book didn‘t peak till the last 20% but the climax was only maybe 5-10% of that at most. 3mo

John Scalzi is a treasure! Just started his newest book last night and am absolutely in love so far! He makes sci-fi FUN! He takes a great story and just injects it with a whole lot of hilarity and emotion! Some sci-fi books get bogged down with the science-y elements (I'm looking at you, The Martian! I love you but you were tricky at times!) but Scalzi gives you just as much info as you need without making you get lost in the concepts/lingo! 📚💕

This is a quick, fun science fiction adventure. The author uses pop culture to bring lightness to a solid story. As Scalzi says "We all need a pop song from time to time, particularly after such a stretch of darkness." This was just a fun, quick zany and crazy read with a lot of modern references and some actual science thrown in for good measure. It builds up the story till the last 20% of the book where the real action happens, but that‘s not a bad thing. Overall a book you just gotta read if you‘re looking for something to fill the gap between longer books.

Finished this totally fun, quick read last night. Scalzi did not disappoint. New readers & long time fans alike will find lots to love in this book—it has his trademark wit, pop culture references (we have Ewoks people), people behaving badly/heroically & just trying to survive, alternate universes, big panda-like kaiju (just go with it), & a gig worker who goes on the adventure of a lifetime. This is the pandemic book you‘ve been waiting for!
