The Kaiju Preservation Society
The Kaiju Preservation Society | John Scalzi
111 posts | 89 read | 2 reading | 60 to read
John Scalzi is the most entertaining, accessible writer working in SF today Joe Hill In New York City, Jamie Gray is a driver for food delivery apps. That is, until Jamie makes a delivery to an old acquaintance, Tom, who works at what he calls an animal rights organization. Toms team needs a last-minute grunt to handle things on their next field visit. Jamie, eager to do anything, immediately signs on. What Tom doesnt tell Jamie is that the animals his team cares for are not here on Earth. Not our Earth, at least. In an alternate dimension, massive dinosaur-like creatures named Kaiju roam a warm and human-free world. Theyre the universes largest and most dangerous animal and theyre in trouble. Its not just the Kaiju Preservation Society whose found their way to the alternate world. Others have, too. And their carelessness could cause millions back on our Earth to die. The Kaiju Preservation Society by John Scalzi is a thrilling, fast-paced adventure set on an alternate Earth perfect for fans of Adrian Tchaikovsky and Charles Stross.

Off and racing on Wicked Words for 2024.

And VERY much enjoying this pacey novel about a multiverse scientific expedition to study and preserve kaiju on an alternate Earth - with the wackiest biology you've ever read.

I was at an SF con where Scalzi did an audience-prompted world-building exercise in which we ended up with octogoats. These Kaiju are far stranger. But no spoilers.

In my mind, Scalzi is the spiritual heir to Ron Goulart and with every book I read is creating a as strong on hold on my aged heart as Goulart ever did on my young one. This rollicking tale of a kaiju NGO (think Save the Monsters instead of Save the Whales) packs more humor, wit, adventure, and pathos in its relatively short length than it has a right to.

Fun! Started strong but had a predictable end. To me, very much Jurassic Park for the current age, with better science than the JP movie and less developed bad guys than the JP book.
Jamie takes a job where she‘s told her advanced degree in Science Fiction literature will be an asset. She travels to an earth with nuclear powered Kaiju and works as a grunt. The Real Monster Question plays out and chaos must be averted.
3.5/5 fun and easy SciFi

A fun SciFi adventure romp with Kaiju. Because who doesn‘t love Godzilla-like creatures and multiverses.

This is why John Scalzi is one of my fave authors.

I also recommend reading the author‘s note. He explains how the story came about.

This was such a fun book! Set during the pandemic, Jamie is stuck working as a delivery driver until he runs into an old friend who offers him a job at an 'animal rights organization' which turns out to be a secret organization that cares for kaiju on an alt-Earth. This was packed full of adventure and Scalzi's brand of humor. The narration by Wil Wheaton was icing on the cake

This is a low pick from me.
The story was quite fun, and I did enjoy it, but I‘m not sure I get on with the authors writing style 😂

After losing his job during the pandemic, Jamie is offered a job at the KPS lifting things. All he knows is that it is secretive and involves working with large animals. These turn out to be Kaiju. Overall it was an enjoyable and quick read ☺️

Quirky, fun sci-fi story about a man down on his luck when covid and quarantine starts, who is recruited to work for an organization dedicated to the study and preservation of a mysterious creature. The tone and sarcastic humor was entertaining, light hearted, a bit corny at times, and it appeared the the author had a good time writing this, poking fun at the situation and society in general. Jurassic Park/Godzilla fans will really enjoy it.

A fun romp through an alternate world full of Godzillas. The author wrote this as a quick fun change of pace after the pandemic. And it reads that way. It‘s a bit corny and predictable but a lot of fun.

Jamie loses his job right as the pandemic starts and ends up delivering food, the only gig he can find. He runs into someone who offers him a different opportunity that ends up being pretty extraordinary. This was a fun book. The plot points were obvious way in advance, but that didn‘t diminish my enjoyment.

Loved this book. They create a world that sounds amazing and makes me wish I could go there. There is a bad guy who is really evil and a great main character. Jamie is so likable, and his friends are wonderful. Everyone in this book is so smart. It's very fast paced and I was never bored. I felt I learned some science but it wasn't forced on me.

I had no idea what ‘kaiju‘ stood for, so went into this clueless. I think my ignorance made the reveal more fun. I love Scalzi‘s humorous writing and Wil Wheaton‘s reading style should have been a good fit, but it didn‘t work for me. I switched to print midway through and enjoyed it more. Oh, and don‘t let the book blurb disuade you. The pandemic is just the initial backdrop and is barely mentioned after the first few chapters.

This was a fun Sci-fi adventure for fans of classic kaiju films (think Godzilla). It takes place at the beginning of the pandemic and our main character has been down graded from engineer to food delivery driver. Through a random happening he falls into a very unique job studying and preserving very very big creatures. A very fun read that I could totally see as a movie! 4⭐️

This book has been my husband‘s and my road trip book for awhile; we finished it today. It was just fun and light sci-fi. At the end, Scalzi explains that he‘d been writing a deep and mostly depressing novel, but he couldn‘t handle that in the middle of a pandemic, so he scrapped that and went with this. Wil Wheaton is the perfect narrator.

TheSpineView I agree! 1y
shanaqui I can't hear any of John Scalzi's narrators as anyone *but* Wil Wheaton, hahaha. I've been listening to Lock In/Head On with my wife and that's Wil Wheaton too, and also perfect. 1y

I loved this, it was hilarious. This is the perfect covid book for anyone who needs a laugh. A food delivery driver during lockdown gets offered a mysterious job. Travel to another dimension to help preserve the kaiju (Japanese godzilla monsters). Will Wheton is a fantastic narrator for this self depreciating, sarcastic MC. Scalzi's authors note explained why he wrote this novel and he accomplished his goals. It takes Jurassic Park to a new level!

shanaqui Oof, I thought Will Wheaton was perfect for Lock In/Head On, but yeah, this might be even more perfect for him as a narrator! 2y

Scalzi describes this book well in his author‘s note at the end- it‘s like a pop song, fun to sing along to, kind of predictable, might get stuck in your head a little.

🌟🌟🌟3.5 actually. I needed a fun Godzilla monster story with lots of action and fun for the soul. Oh and don‘t forget the alternate world which is another favorite genre. Only gripe was that it threw lots of 2020 horrors in the mix which takes me out of the story and puts me in the funk I don‘t want to relive. I feel the same way as Scalzi about 2020 and perhaps writing about it in cathartic as a writer, but I need to escape this world.

SUCH A GOOD TIME!!! If you hold any nostalgia for 90s sci-fi/action/adventure movies, but would prefer something a little more enlightened in terms of representation and sense of humour, I cannot overstate how enjoyable a read this is. The author's note in the back says it all. Love the non-binary rep, and interweaving current concerns into the narrative somehow without making it anxiety-inducing.🤷🏼‍♂️
