A bittersweet coming-of-age story full of Bradbury-esque nostalgia! Jake's twelfth summer is spent investigating local ghost stories but the truth he finds is more haunting than he could ever suspect. A powerful look at the mysteries of childhood and memory.

Another sharp little novella from Tor.com, most of the book focuses on the premise that some people die before their time, those people become ghosts, and those ghosts can take years off a human's age, add it to their own, and cross over when they reach the age they were destined to die. But this exchange can go both ways, and ghosts can be trapped and forced to take years against their will. It's a pretty cool idea, but I would have liked more.

JazzFeathers I agree. The idea was awesome, still the story didn't satisfy me. 13h

I‘ve been camping since Saturday. No service, no phone. I finished 3 books (2 were already in progress). I watched a little green caterpillar eat a blade of grass for at least half of an hour. It was lovely. Here‘s some Humanure to convey how lovely it was. 😆🤷‍♀️

RachelO That sounds lovely! Mostly! 🐛 1d

3.5 stars. Even the cover of this one scared me as a kid, but a children's literature class afforded me an opportunity to revisit it. This is surprisingly creepy for a children's book, and I related to Molly and her frustrations and feelings of not being heard. Heather is pretty messed-up, but she's a kid. Continued in comments.

Krisjericho What I can't forgive is the parents. Seriously. Get it together, supposed adults. Stop pawning your kids off on your other kids and then being upset when a 12-year old doesn't raise your child as well as you would like. Stop not standing up for your kids when your new husband is a jerk to them. Don't remarry if you can't be a decent human to your new stepkids, Heather's dad. 3d
Krisjericho MAYBE LISTEN WHEN SOMEONE TRIES TO TELL YOU YOUR KID IS TALKING TO A GHOST.

Scary, with enough realistic touches to make it even scarier.

xicanti Is this the one where the ghost rips up all the kids‘ possessions? I loved that book when I was little but I‘ve never been able to remember the name. 3d

sprainedbrain This book scared the heck out of little me! 3d
ravenlee I hated the parents in this one! My book club had a long discussion about the parents (I missed this meeting though). I feel like the parents and their neglect of the kids is what really dates this story, and I wonder if kids reading it now get hung up on the impossibility of having a summer completely void of adult supervision. 2d

My two oldest kids read this book and told me I had to read it too. It was a nice quick read, not the usual scary “ghost story”.

#litsyneighborhood @MrBook

Here is a collage of various scenes around my house. The only exception is the lower right corner picture. That was taken on the Blue Ridge Parkway which runs through Asheville. I live on the west side and it is kind of rural. So not much neighborhood to look at. Just my pasture.

tracey38 I love going up to Ashville and the surrounding area. Just beautiful. 2w

An interesting read about a haunted house in Brooklyn in the 80s. Elaine, a registered nurse, along with her two daughters start expiring weird phenomena. The feeling of being watched, different smells, light orbs, shadows, amorphous shapes, laughter, whispers, etc. I won't give too much detail but she claims all of it is true. A quick and interesting read.

BiblioLitten Cujo wasn‘t good? It‘s on my TBR and I have high hopes😬 2w
BookwormAHN @BiblioLitten The story itself was good, but I didn't connect with any of the characters and the little kid Tad, got on my nerves. The insights into Cujo's head was both fascinating and sad. 2w
