Jamaica Inn | Daphne Du Maurier
"A fine romantic tale...rich in suspense and surprise." --New York Times Book ReviewOn a bitter November evening, young Mary Yellan journeys across the rainswept moors to Jamaica Inn in honor of her mother's dying request. When she arrives, the warning of the coachman begins to echo in her memory, for her aunt Patience cowers before hulking Uncle Joss Merlyn. Terrified of the inn's brooding power, Mary gradually finds herself ensnared in the dark schemes being enacted behind its crumbling walls -- and tempted to love a man she dares not trust.

Great, real page-turner, atmospheric descriptions both of Cornwall and of time period. Though sometimes wasn‘t sure if author‘s habit of using simple colour adjectives was pithy or boring - brown cow, green fields, grey tor - one page had loads in close succession and it felt like overkill. Gothic and with a feisty heroine. I wonder if the ending was a bit sudden but intriguing to speculate how that would play out (avoiding spoiler!). Liked it.

Don‘t you hate it when you can see what‘s coming (at least, 99.8% sure) and the heroine can‘t? It‘s killing me!

Only a mini spoiler. Just thinking that I‘m glad that near the beginning of the book the male villain tells the female protagonist he‘s no interest in sexually assaulting her, and we believe him. I feel like it‘s come to be a common theme in thrillers / mysteries with female leads, either in the narrative or as back story, and it‘s a relief knowing it‘s not going to be a feature of this story. There‘s enough else that‘s horrible about villain #1!

I ♡ it. I love these 19th century novels. Not because of the love stories but for this silent atmosphere. With people who love and apreciate nature. I admire their strenth, they had simple desires: food, a home, a family. Nowadays everybody complaints about everything and wants to be the best.

A great adventure novel with a great storyteller.

Anxiety inducing, gothic, atmospheric suspense. I felt like it dragged in many places but I kept reading because I needed to know what happened to the characters I began to root for—and what happened to the ones I disliked. If you are going into this expecting something similar to REBECCA then you will be disappointed. I enjoyed it but REBECCA is still #1.

After her mother‘s death, Mary stays with her aunt and uncle in a remote place at the moor, near the rainswept Cornish coast. There she encounters sinister activities at night which endangers her life. With shipwreck and murder, it‘s a Gothic romance which I‘ve enjoyed reading.

I really disliked the dramatics of the audio narration, but overall the story was odd and the end was so drawn out.

Loved it! Written in the early 20th century but set in the 19th, this is essentially a love story but with real grit including loss, emotional upheaval, illegal goings-on and subterfuge. I admire Du Maurier‘s style and even though I guessed how the story would end, it didn‘t detract from the overall enjoyment of this book. The narration by British thespian Tony Britton is impeccable ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #Audible

I‘m very glad I did pick it up this is one of my best reads this year. The main character Mary Yellan is engaging, you really invest in her life. The story is well paced and the writing is beautiful. I have to admit to working out the ending some 3/4 of the way through, but this didn‘t stop my enjoyment.

This is a brilliant read and I will definitely be picking more up from this author. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Meh...
I was really enjoying this. Du Maurier really showed mastery of suspense in this, even if it was yet another girl orphaned to the moors.
And then she had a ridiculously long chapter on selling a stolen pony to someone, & she lost me.
The outcome - at this point in time; who knows what readers thought in 1936? - was predictable, so the selling points were characterization & plotting. So when she lost me there, I should have just stopped.

Sweettartlaura Note: it was a chapter on selling a pony, not a paragraph 🤣 1y

Audiobook so no photo I‘m afraid! It took less than a day to listen to so I‘m counting it as my #quickread for #readingresolutions

I normally have so much to say about books but this one I just kind of... don‘t. I liked it but don‘t know how much I‘ll remember it really. I did enjoy it but it was very melodramatic, which I like sometimes but maybe I just wasn‘t in the mood for

thebluestocking Hmmm. I didn‘t know this one was so quick. I‘ve been meaning to read another by Du Maurier. 2y
Bklover I‘ve read Rebecca a few times and always enjoyed it but I have never been able to get in to this one. 2y

See All 7 Comments
Emilymdxn @Wanderingwithwords I‘ve got my cousin Rachel on my tbr and I loved the movie of that, and I loved Rebecca, so I‘m optimistic! Maybe I just didn‘t like the audiobook tbh, I hate when male narrators use silly shrill voices for female characters 2y
Sophoclessweetheart Ugh. I don‘t use audiobooks but I can imagine that to be extremely annoying and quite bigoted of the narrator. 🙄 I‘m glad you‘re enjoying her other work though. Most people prefer Rebecca so it‘s her most popular book but Jamaica Inn just has that Wuthering Heights vibe to it and I can‘t resist. Xxx 2y
Emilymdxn @Wanderingwithwords I guess a lot of the reason I found it too-silly melodramatic rather than immersive-Gothic melodramatic was because of the voices and accents which were... interesting 2y

I fell deeply in love with REBECCA last year and had high hopes for more of du Maurier's work, but I've gotta put this one aside. At 70 pages in, I haven't found the urgency or sense of place I expected, and I can't muster up the enthusiasm to keep with it.

It's probably me, not JAMAICA INN. I'll try again in a couple of years.

Tamra Might want to try listening to My Cousin Rachel. I actually preferred it to Rebecca. 2y
xicanti @Tamra that's quite the rec given how much I loved Rebecca! (I enjoyed it the first time, but last year's reread blew me away.) My library doesn't have MCR on audio, but I'll keep an eye out for a print copy. 2y
