Dead Poets Society
Dead Poets Society | N. H. Kleinbaum
37 posts | 23 read | 28 to read
Todd Anderson and his friends at Welton Academy can hardly believe how different life is since their new English professor, the flamboyant John Keating, has challenged them to "make your lives extraordinary! Inspired by Keating, the boys resurrect the Dead Poets Society--a secret club where, free from the constraints and expectations of school and parents, they let their passions run wild. As Keating turns the boys on to the great words of Byron, Shelley, and Keats, they discover not only the beauty of language, but the importance of making each moment count. But the Dead Poets pledges soon realize that their newfound freedom can have tragic consequences. Can the club and the individuality it inspires survive the pressure from authorities determined to destroy their dreams?

We don't read and write poetry because it's cute. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race, and the human race is filled with passion. Medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for." - John Keating, Dead Poets Society.

#QuotsyApril18 | April 24: pursuit

This quote came to mind for today‘s prompt, although it was a movie first that was later adapted into a novel.

But I love the movie, which always makes me cry. Who doesn‘t love Robin Williams portrayal of John Keating?! ❤️ Plus, poetry! #NationalPoetryMonth

The story itself is of course great, but a book which is written after a movie isn't a good idea.

I really love the movie, but the book leaves many episodes of the movie, which are very important in my opinion.

Some thoughts aren't expressed good enough in this short (160 pages) book, it could have been better.

I will watch the movie again in a few days. 😊

readinginthedark Was it written after the movie? 😯I thought the movie was based on the book! I don‘t usually like the ones based on movies; they always leave some background to be desired. 2y
Sarah83 @readinginthedark In the German edition is written, 'the book to the movie'. In most cases this shows, that the book was written after the movie. 2y
readinginthedark That‘s too bad. Maybe I won‘t read it then and just enjoy my beautiful movie version. 2y
Sarah83 @readinginthedark I wouldn't read it. The movie is so much better. 2y

@jdtchicago favorite poet: I must say i think objectively Shaeskpeare is the more important poet but I must admit his sonnets don't do much for me.😙
In truth, I only like Frost and Dickinson as English language poets. They remind me of Machado and the best of Lorca

So avoid using the word ‘very‘ because it‘s lazy. A man is not very tired, he is exhausted. Don‘t use very sad, use morose. Language was invented for one reason, boys - to woo women - and, in that endeavor, laziness will not do. It also won‘t do in your essays.

Definitely didn't capture the story in full. Such a lame attempt — it was basically just a description of the movie, and it does no justice to the characters or even the location. Beautiful story, nevertheless — just kind of a half-assed attempt to novelize it IMO. ⭐️⭐️💫
