Chelsea.Poole
The Echo Chamber | John Boyne
post image
Pickpick

This satire is a blazing takedown of cancel culture and our collective obsession with social media and being chronically online. I love John Boyne‘s books but have read about his own recent situation which he was “cancelled”. Knowing his personal views and in light of recent events, I read this through a lens of “this is how the author feels” when outrageous and over the top “woke” characters were skewered. An absurd #dysfunctionalfamily.⬇️

Chelsea.Poole ⬆️ After reading this I just know John Boyne is seething mad about his current situation. Though it was hard to read knowing he has spoken out about against those he should be welcoming in his own community, it was a good read, hilarious and biting. 6d
AmyG Very interesting. I still want to read this, perhaps more now. 6d
Bookwomble He unintentional (I assume) wrote a transphobic novel, acknowledging that he didn't speak to any trans people when doing his 'research', and then refused to take on board the reasonable criticism from the trans community when issues were brought to his attention. The arrogance of writing somebody else's story about which you know little is rather startling. I haven't "cancelled" him, but I do exercise my freedom to not read any of his books ? 6d

BarbaraBB Interesting! I want to read it too. 5d
Jas16 @Bookwomble He has labeled himself a TERF and come out in support of Rowling. The Polari Prize was cancelled this year due to the uproar over his inclusion. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/clyvme385e6o.amp 5d
Prairiegirl_reading I really liked this one too and I was so excited for the elements that just came out here in Canada but I won‘t be buying that one or any others by him. To support jk Rowling and actually call himself a terf! No thanks. 5d
Bookwomble @Jas16 So sad that my assumption was wrong 😕 Thanks for the info - that just confirms my decision not to bother with him. 5d
Chelsea.Poole I was so surprised at the content of this novel. If I didn‘t know his thoughts when reading this, I would have assumed he was supportive of the trans community but knowing he wasn‘t definitely changed the way I read it. I will say it is a very well-observed take on the way social media is used as a weapon, and looking at motivations of people and the duplicitous nature of some. 5d

Yes! I have finally made it to 300 reviews on NetGalley and, seen as you don't get a badge for 300 and it might be a looooong old while before I get to 500, I will have to blow my own trumpet 🎺🎺🎺

Please disregard the fact that my feedback ratio is a disgrace ... disgraceful 😳

vlwelser 80% is fine 2w
EKonrad You don‘t even want to know my Feedback Ratio then. 🫣 2w
readingjedi @EKonrad It's the recommended level...unfortunately my level is the much lower figure 🫣 2w

#haikuhive
#haikuaday

This book (#futureshock) came out 55 years ago and is based on an article that came out in the summer of 1965, 60 years ago. Toffler's known for coining the phrase “INFORMATION OVERLOAD.“ Hence this haiku.

Information floods––
overloads us 'til we're shocked
into submission.

lil1inblue Oof! So timely. Excellent construction! 🤩 3mo

julieclair You have managed to write a dystopian novel in 9 words. Wow. Well done. And you found a perfect picture to accompany it. 👏🏆🐝🖤 3mo

dabbe @julieclair Wow. Thank you!!! 😍 I google-imaged the words “future shock“, and this was a picture that popped up. Very fitting, isn't it? 🖤🐝🖤 3mo
CBee Super cool haiku and picture 😊 (edited) 3mo
julieclair @dabbe So fitting. Did you teach this book? 3mo
JenlovesJT47 It does look like a dystopian novel. Reminds me of 1984 for some reason. Would make a great first sentence for your novel! 🖤🤍🩶🤍🖤 3mo
dabbe @julieclair Nope. I read it in high school for AP English; plus, I saw the movie narrated by Orson Welles. I came across an article yesterday referring to it, and hence this haiku! 😍 3mo
dabbe @JenlovesJT47 Now you'll know how old I am. I read that novel in English 101 in the year 1984. Because, well, y'know. 😂 And I wish I were that good! 3mo
JenlovesJT47 I was born in 1984 😳 3mo
dabbe @JenlovesJT47 Well, that's an eye-opener, isn't it? 😳😂🤣 3mo

dabbe @kelli7990 It's an oldie, but a goodie. 3mo
julieclair I didn‘t know there was a movie! 3mo
dabbe @julieclair It's a 1972 documentary narrated by Orson Welles! Here's a link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fkUwXenBokU 3mo
julieclair Oohhh… it‘s a documentary! Love! I‘m thinking I should read the book first?? Stacked. 3mo

UTOPIA FOR REALISTS. | RUTGER. BREGMAN
post image
Pickpick

Honestly, a much easier and more straightforward read than I thought to was going to be.
It definitely brings the facts and the stats, and not all of them are encouraging, but in proposing better ideas for the future it helps to present, and properly frame, the mistakes and misconceptions of the past.
An overwhelming proportion of this book is about money and work, but that makes a great deal of sense, from at the very least a subjective 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? view, because those are definitely the main factors affecting my happiness on the regular. 💁🏼‍♂️ And Bregman makes a compelling case for how these factors can overhaul society.
I appreciate the book ending in a kick in the pants aimed at the Left/'underdog socialists', the man knows his mostly likely audience and is eager to ensure action by again pointing out what hasn't worked, and in inspirational fashion, what could.

Robotswithpersonality 3/3 This book is ten years old, so the repeated references to obesity in the context of problems society could be tackling better is perhaps unsurprising. I would hope that if a revised edition is issued this gets replaced with 'negative health outcomes', or similar more accurate, relevant phrasing.
