Frankenstein, or, The Modern Prometheus
Frankenstein, or, The Modern Prometheus | Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley
Frankenstein was published in 1818, the work of a 21-year-old genius named Mary Shelley. Hundreds of movies, adaptations, and monster masks later, its reputation remains so lively that the title has become its own word in the English language. Victor Frankenstein, a scientist, discovers the secret of reanimating the dead. After he rejects his hideous creation, not even the farthest poles of the earth will keep his bitter monster from seeking an inhuman revenge. Inspired by a uniquely Romantic view of sciences possibilities, Shelleys masterpiece ultimately wrestles with the hidden shadows of the human mind.

I'm really glad to have finally read this classic. It wasn't as spooky as I expected. I thought the creation scene would be more dramatic at least but a lot of the story is anticlimactic and Frankenstein doing nothing productive, only complaining how hard his life has become

This was a reread for me, and while I always love reading along with the #HashtagBrigade , ol' Victor got on my nerves even more this time around. He's just so useless! If he spent half the time actually doing something productive as he does sitting around and bemoaning his fate, the creature wouldn't have had the opportunities for destruction that he had. In the end, I think both Frankenstein and the creature are both monsters. This book ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) definitely deserves its status as a classic and is completely worth the read, but I get too aggravated with literally everyone to really love it. Soft pick.

Took my daughter to the movies on Halloween to see Frankenstein, by Guillermo Del Toro. It veers from the book but it was a beautiful adaptation, Elizabeth has far more of a role and the Creature‘s initial innocence is so well done. Daughter wept - I nearly did - really moving. Also a bit gory in places. I saw a great meme titling the movie “Frankenstein - or how to DIY Jacob Elordi in your basement” 😂

GingerAntics 🤣😂🤣 2d
vivastory Lolol I'm glad you & your daughter enjoyed it. It's definitely in my top 5 of the year. 2d
Centique @vivastory yes me too! And my daughter (the real film aficionado in our house) says its one of her top ten ever 🙌 She was rushing home to write about it on Letterboxd. Do you use that? 2d

vivastory @Centique I log my movies, but I don't write reviews on them (with the one time exception of Brandon Cronenberg's Possessor, when I wrote something along the lines of: I don't think I've ever muttered WTF so frequently in the final 5 minutes of a movie. Lolol). I actually love that movie, but to say it's shocking is putting it mildly lolol 2d

In honor of Halloween and the finishing of this brilliant novel by the #hashtagbrigade. This one never gets old. 🖤💚🖤

AnnCrystal Wow, incredible capturing. Powerful 👏🏼🐝🥺🐝💝.

I was reading Guillermo del Toro's comments about his new take on Frankenstein.

Never read the book, nor have I watched any of the movies...I tried when I was a kid, but I just couldn't because it was just too sad.

Yet, I found Guillermo's remarks on the storyline very interesting.

🥲🎬💝.

AnnCrystal Qoute “I did want it to have the arrogance of Victor [Frankenstein] be similar in some ways to the tech bros. He's kind of blind, creating something without considering the consequences.“ - Guillermo del Toro

Guillermo del Toro later clarified that the film is not a metaphor for AI, stating, “I'm not afraid of artificial intelligence. I'm afraid of natural stupidity.“

💫🎬💫💝.

Frankenstein was enjoyable enough. As usual it wasn‘t at all what I thought it would be, but that‘s not a bad thing. My favorite chapters were the ones where they were on the boat. My least favorites were when Frank would just faint for months at a time.

Picture is of the pumpkin I bought today because the lady at the register said it looked like Frankenstein. (I didn‘t tell her she meant the creature.)

I noticed some mixed reactions as I left the sold out nighttime showing of Del Toro's latest. Personally? I loved it. I think that if you have read the, & enjoyed, the book you will be pleased. I think that otherwise it might seem too slow. Although there are a few liberties here & there it is a very faithful version & it is undoubtedly one of Del Toro's most visually stunning works.

LeahBergen I‘ll probably like it then! 👍 1w

vivastory @Billypar Totally agree re: Devil's Backbone. 1w
Bookwomble @vivastory I really liked Cabinet of Curiosities, especially the Lovecraft adaptations (despite the liberties!). I'd guessed they weren't doing a second series after this time - so many good shows don't seem to get the traction they need 🫤 1w
vivastory @Bookwomble This is true. I read recently in Filterworld that around 70 percent of the NF content are series. That's why I'm so cautious of starting any of them. I mean Stranger Things is wrapping up a decade after it aired, but this is the new norm for streaming 1w
vivastory @Bookwomble I still need to watch season 4 of Stranger Things. I plan on doing so before season 5, but I read an article about the planned release dates for season 5 and it is wild. I have never seen anything like it 1w

KAO @TheAromaofBooks I take it back! The description of mysterious, misty paths in the mountains of Switzerland in this chapter seems ideal for the setting here! Bookwormjillk @KAO that‘s what I thought too! I didn‘t expect such an eloquent creature! 3w
dabbe The creature is highly intelligent and longs for companionship. Victor (the “father) shuns his creation JUST BECAUSE he is hideous on the outside. The creature then becomes hideous on the inside because of his abandonment by Victor. One just has to ask: which is more important to one's development as a human being? Nature or nurture? The easy answer is both are important, but the case for “nurture“ is about to be made by the creature in his tale. 3w

KAO Meanwhile, ever since the beginning of this book, I‘ve been amazed that this takes place in Switzerland, of all places! So are these characters British transplants—and I missed that somehow? Or are they really speaking German, French, Italian, or Romansh (official languages of Switzerland), and we‘re just getting an English translation?? Just seems odd to me! 3w
KAO Okay—I had forgotten about the letters at the beginning! Robert Walton wrote to his family members from Russia and then later from his sea voyage about meeting this very sad fellow traveller (Victor, I assume), who spoke “in English, although with a foreign accent” and who later shared his tragic tale. I know he needed to be from a mysterious place, but Switzerland? 3w
Clare-Dragonfly Victor continues to be incredibly self-centered, insisting that he is the most tormented! 3w

ElizaMarie You'd think (even if sick) he would tell someone like “guys, there is this monster out there, we might want to track him down” like he wasn't death bed sick- also nobody in his family checks on him? 3w

Clare-Dragonfly So… what does he think the creature is doing?! And Elizabeth apparently thinks Victor is an idiot, since she assumes he doesn‘t remember how a girl described as a great favorite of his came to join the household 😂 4w
ElizaMarie @dabbe yeah he is very #OutOfSightOutIOfMind about this creature 4w
KAO It‘s unbelievable how the creature is simply not a concern! I kept waiting for comments indicating Victor‘s worry—or at least curiosity!! 4w
Bklover What creature?? Ohhhhh, that one!! 4w
Sparklemn @Clare-Dragonfly Honestly, I had to read this section multiple times because I assumed I missed something. 🤔 3w

I love this production…Dan Stevens does a great job narrating! This is one of my favorites and I like to reread it this time of year.

dabbe Victor, Victor ... you had to know that reattaching parts from corpses and then sewing them back together was not going to produce a handsome creature. You ran away because he's ugly? Or did you run away from yourself and the fact that you just tried to play God over the universe? You literally have messed with Mother Nature, and she's gonna get ugly on your ass. #mytwocents 4w
BarkingMadRead @dabbe 💯💯💯 4w
KAO @Bookwormjillk 😂Yes! What could possibly go well after abandoning this new life form?!?! 4w
Bklover @dabbe It‘s not nice to fool Mother Nature!😉 4w
ElizaMarie Frankie - OH NO!!! Must run!!! 4w
Sparklemn Is it odd that I feel very, very sad for the creature? 😦 3w

Seabreeze_Reader 😂😂😂 to the posted meme above. After the creepy descriptions via Victor, the online persona sounds like a less gruesome option. 1mo

BarkingMadRead @Bookwormjillk the poor moms! They never stand a chance! 1mo

dabbe Maybe the moms die to spur the children to grow up and go on their quest. Victor's mom definitely did that for him. I find it interesting, too, that Victor ignores the warnings of his first professor, Krempe, just as Walton seems to ignore Victor: both are blinded by their ambition to gain glory. Walton wants to find the northwest passage, and Victor wants to aid society through science. As @BarkingMadRead knowingly said, #whatcouldgowrong? 1mo
Clare-Dragonfly And the mom‘s dying wish is for Victor and Elizabeth to get married 😬 1mo

dabbe #mytwocents Two versions of FRANKENSTEIN were published: one in 1818, and one in 1831. The more popular one is the 1831 version. In that one, Elizabeth is “adopted“, but in the 1818 version, she was Alphonse's niece and Victor's real cousin. By 1831, Shelley had experienced the death of two children and her husband, which gave her a more pessimistic view on the story and made her more morally cautious. She also softened Victor's character. 1mo
Clare-Dragonfly @dabbe I wondered which version I had—Project Gutenberg wasn‘t clear! Now I know I have the 1831 text. What an interesting change. Thank you! 1mo
dabbe @Clare-Dragonfly I hoped the Elizabeth distinction would help! Not a lot of issues list the publication date! No idea why. 😍 1mo
Bklover @dabbe- thanks for the info!🩵. I didn‘t know there were two versions. Victor is going to be an interesting character 🤨 1mo
