A #BucketList is a list of all the things you want to do before you die. Like reading this selection of 1001 books, perhaps.

jillrhudy I liked the original version of this. Every update seems forced and arbitrary. I think they decided there was too much Western culture and too many men, and some of the replacement books were bizarre, as were the books axed. 1w

#1001books #readaroundtheworld So I did a thing. I mostly cleaned up the nationalities from the complete GR list of authors in the tagged book. Then I got a complete list of countries/sovereign states. Then I combined the two. It should be viewable here: https://bit.ly/30y0xg7. Might add column for #readwomen later.

Read harder AND smarter, Littens. I don't know if I'll ever real all 1200+ books, but I want to read as diversely as possible.

It is an absolutely gorgeous day today, and thanks to @ValerieAndBooks , I found the Goodreads Google spreadsheet for the tagged book. Sorted it by books that haven't been deleted over the multiple editions, then started tagging those I've already read. 37 of over 1200 😬 but a lot of them are on my TBR anyway, so I think it'll be a fun long-range goal to chip away at! #1001books

Emilymdxn I feel the same! I‘ve been working away at the list for years and feel like I‘ll never get there but it‘s fun either way. What are you thinking of starting with? 3mo
jchawkins @Emilymdxn probably adichie. Calvino, Murakami, and Oz are already favs of mine so those will probably be hit pretty early too. Where are you at right now? 3mo
squirrelbrain I was just gifted this book! I‘ve found the spreadsheet (thank you!) so I‘ll have a look at that after my hols... 3mo
See All 19 Comments
llwheeler I didn't know there was a spreadsheet, thanks for the tip! I have this list as a long term, no pressure goal too. 3mo
jchawkins @squirrelbrain @squirrelbrain sure thing! So much easier than making the sheet manually... 😅 3mo
Emilymdxn @jchawkins I‘ve been working on it about ten years and I‘m hoping to climb from 19% to 20% total this year - slow but rewarding progress! Ahhh Calvino is my fave too 3mo
jchawkins @Emilymdxn geez, that's dedication! Good for you!! And yay Calvino ♥️ 3mo
Sarahreadstoomuch I‘m working on it too... not sure where I‘m at right now, but it‘s a great list! 3mo
TheEllieMo I have a phone app for these! It has every book that‘s featured in any edition of 1001 Books you must read before you die, 1315 in total. So far I‘ve read 38. Only a few more, then...... 3mo
ValerieAndBooks Welcome to the club 😊🤓!! It‘s fun trying even though I know I probably won‘t get to them all (so far, only 12.7% of all 1315 — the phone app calculates that too) 3mo
Sunraven Goshdarnit, now I want to find the spreadsheet, too. Must ... do ... bookish ... things... 3mo
jchawkins @ValerieAndBooks yeah, idk about you but I'm not aiming to finish them all. I'll read at least every author if I can, but I'll only read an author more than once if I like them, and I've got no qualms bailing if the book isnt my thing. That app sounds great tho... 3mo
jchawkins @Sunraven this is a community of enablers of overcommitting to books! ?(This emoji popped up when I searched "muahaha!"! ?) 3mo
Sunraven It looks like your emoji is truly villainous, since from here it‘s just a question mark. 😆 It‘s made its daring escape! 3mo
ValerieAndBooks Trust me, I bail too 😂! And so many of these books are chunksters, too ! 3mo
Lynnsoprano @Sunraven Litsy is a rabbit hole you fell down, like the rest of us 😂 3mo
Sunraven @Lynnsoprano: Took me a while, though ... I failed to get the hang of it late last year when I first joined, but I‘m glad I felt compelled to blather publicly about books again recently. I like this rabbit hole. 😆 3mo
Lynnsoprano @sunraven Welcome to the club 😂 3mo

About last night...I became so enthralled with this “big ole book” that I skimmed it from cover to cover. I learned a lot of different things including: I definitely will not and do not want to read all of these particular books; I even decided against some classics I thought I was gonna read; found books I had not heard of that I can‘t wait to read; reading 1 page book reviews is fun. It‘s really worth going through it, I think. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

vivastory There are a few people on here who are reading their way through the list. I have a couple of the editions. I love it. 4mo
Joyfulmimi Some things I cannot read about and enjoy because triggers. I was happy to find lots of new books that I did not know about @vivastory 4mo
BarbaraBB I am working my way through this list but are definitely not going to read all of them. It has led me to some great discoveries though, books I never would have learned about otherwise! 4mo

(Continued) Here are my other 5-star reads.

The GR Reading 1001 group, our #1001Discoveries PBC, and several Litsy friends who are also attempting the list all helped me make stay motivated and make progress.

If I have to pick an absolute favorite from 2018... I can‘t. 🤷🏻‍♀️

The Breast by Roth was easily the worst. Seriously...wtf is it doing on the list? 😂

I‘m up to 154 books read from the list, so I have a loooong way to go!

RealBooks4ever Fantastic! Heh, “Roth” 😆 9mo

I‘m working on finishing 3 more books before the new year, but none of them are #1001books... so, I‘m doing a wrap up of my progress for 2018.

My goal was to read at least 25 books from the list this year, and I read 72! 😯

Of these, a whopping 22 were 5-star reads for me, and I don‘t think I‘m overly free with 5-star ratings. Listed are half of them. All so good!

I guess I have a lot to say, so my musings are continued in my next post! 😂

I found the #1001books hashtag here and the #Reading1001 group on Goodreads near the end of 2017 and made reading more of these books a goal for 2018. I'm happy to say that I have read and/or listened to 40 books from the list this year. A couple of these were rereads of books I did not have dates for in Goodreads, but most were new to me. They include a few I disliked, but I appreciated something about almost all and truly enjoyed many.

Today I spent a considerable amount of time comparing the combined Boxall list with the Guardian 1000 list. I discovered that there is an overlap of 470 books. In addition the lists have a lot of authors in common, but disagree on which of their books are list worthy.
The Guardian has a much more extensive SFF section than Boxall, although some of them I would not call SFF at all.
Clearly a good day‘s work. Important info for organising my TBR. 🧐

saresmoore Very important! You make me want to do the same thing! 12mo
BarbaraBB Interesting! I made that comparison once too but it was years ago and I don‘t know whether the Guardian list changes over time like the Boxall does? 12mo
Leniverse @BarbaraBB I don't think they've updated it. The website says it was edited this February, but only to correct spelling. Not really sure when the Guardian list was made. 🤔 12mo
See All 13 Comments
Leniverse @saresmoore It's a good way of getting to know the lists. I have a clearer idea of my TBR priorities now. 12mo
sprainedbrain I‘m afraid to even look at the list from the Guardian... I‘m already obsessed with the Boxall complete. 😳 12mo
Leniverse @sprainedbrain Because of the overlap there's only an additional 530 books. ? Many of them a different or additional selection of books by authors on the Boxall list. But they have more popular culture classics. And they've set them out in sections: "Love", "War & Travel", "Comedy", "Family and Self", "State of the Nation", "Crime", "SFF". (Actually, they have the whole Discworld series as one entry, so I guess it's more than 530 extra books. ?) 12mo
sprainedbrain @Leniverse OMG, I guess! 😂 What I need is a Goodreads list that already has those 530 books, so I don‘t have to fall down a rabbit hole and spend a whole day on it (like I did originally when I added the complete 1001 to my tbr shelf in GR). 😜 12mo
Leniverse @sprainedbrain I haven‘t made that effort yet, for either list. I just add books as I go along. But I do think I need to do it for the Guardian list. I have a spreadsheet for Boxall, so I have a better overview there. Something for my next day of total procrastination. 🤓 12mo
RealLifeReading I think the Guardian list was out in 2009 12mo
Leniverse @BarbaraBB @RealLifeReading Aha. Maybe they‘ll do a 10th Anniversary update next year! 12mo
BarbaraBB @RealLifeReading Thank you for checking that out! @sprainedbrain @leniverse I may have made that selection of 530 books. I am not sure and I am not having my laptop here at the moment but I‘ll have a look and will let you know! 12mo

I just read on LibraryThing that there will finally be an update of the list of #1001books to read before you die. Only 10 changes were made. New in are, among others, The Circle, The Goldfinch, Winter (Ali Smith), H is for Hawk, Americanah, The Story of the Lost Child and H(A)PPY.

AudreyMorris I saw this on Facebook today, but can‘t find any info on amazon or Goodreads or here on Litsy. Just 10 seems crazy. On the upside, I‘ve read 2 of those 10 and none of the 10 going out. 13mo
BarbaraBB @AudreyMorris I‘ve read 6 of the ones going out and 5 of the ones coming in 😀. On the upside: I am reading 1001 books from the combined lists so my goal is coming 5 books closer 😉 13mo
BarbaraBB @AudreyMorris Arukiyomi, the one mentioning it on LT, is the owner of the app. He is always in contact with the publishers so I think he got the information first hand. 13mo

AshleyHoss820 @BarbaraBB I was just wondering about this today! I own two editions and I was thinking about how there hadn‘t been an update in a bit. Thank goodness I have the app! 😄😄 13mo
batsy Hmm! The Goldfinch. Is The Secret History already in included? 😁 (And I hope they create an app for Android 🙏🏽) 13mo
BarbaraBB @batsy Yes, The Secret History is already included 👍 13mo
jillrhudy I need a copy of this! 13mo
ValerieAndBooks So there will be a newer edition of the book? Hopefully the app will be updated too if that‘s what is happening! 13mo
BarbaraBB @ValerieAndBooks the app will be updated as well 😅 13mo
ValerieAndBooks Good to know that about the app 😊! Strange that they‘d make a new edition with so few changes 🤷🏻‍♀️ 13mo
Liz_M @batsy Unfortunately, no. A few years ago Arukiyomi tried a Kickstarter campaign to raise money for an Android app and only a few people were willing to pay for one. 😔 13mo
Liz_M @ValerieAndBooks The 2010 edition only changed 11 books. If they made too many changes it would look like they don't know what they are doing. 😉 😁 13mo
batsy @Liz_M Oh, that's too bad :( 13mo
ValerieAndBooks @Liz_M ha, you do make a good point 😊. I have the reading on the beach cover edition which I always thought was an odd design choice! 😂 13mo

Exciting news for those reading from this list! Seems there will be a revised version of the book this fall 📚

#1001books
#Reading1001

hilded And for those curious as to which books have been switched in and out, see more info here: http://arukiyomi.com/?p=6545 (edited) 13mo
Leniverse Ooh! 😱 I'm reading the combined lists, so my list just got even longer! 😂 Thanks for the info. 13mo
dariazeoli I just got the last version less than a year ago! I really will be reading till I die! 😁 13mo

hilded Lol, mine too! The joy of lists 😂 @Leniverse 13mo
hilded Me too! This list is certainly a never ending story 😉😂 @dariazeoli 13mo
minkyb I have an older one as well. I wonder what will be different! 13mo
hilded See my first comment with a link that lists which books have been taken in and out of the list @minkyb. If in fact those are the only changes, there really are quite few considering it's been many years since they last revised the list. 13mo
minkyb Thank you! 13mo
Joyfulmimi Love this list 13mo

Vacationing in NYC and we definitely went a bit crazy in The Strand today. What‘s the point of travel if you don‘t get some books and book related merch? #vacationbuys #somanytotes

rather_be_reading heck ya!! 1y
arubabookwoman The only thing the Strand is missing are quiet nooks and crannies to sit and sample the merchandise. 1y
1001BooksPodcast @arubabookwoman yes it was a bit crazy in there! 1y

@RebelReader @merelybookish @Chinook

JenP I was just going to ask when we should be sending. I just finished my book this week. You and I are on the same schedule 1y
merelybookish I have some notes to write but will try to mail off by Friday. 1y

#1001books friends! I‘d received my copy of the book quite a few weeks ago but have been putting off plunging in as I‘ve been unsure of how to properly chronicle my quest. Today my aunt gave me this journal, and I realized it would be PERFECT. Each place has a full page to write on and space for the dates that you visited on. It will be be the perfect match and I‘m so excited!

Yay!! My new read for the #1001bookswap arrived, along with some cute bookends. 😀 Looks like a change of pace from the last book.😏
I will let @Chinook know on Goodreads.
@JenP @vivastory @RebelReader

RebelReader I can use the change of pace. The last one dang near did me in! 😂🤪 1y

ITS HERRRREEEE!!

Also I knew it would be big but holy smokes it‘s a BRICK. I‘m pretty sure that by the time I‘m through them all I‘ll look like the guy in the painting! 😅 Can‘t wait to attack it with a highlighter!! Also, any other veterans of #1001books how do you keep track of your reading? I‘m thinking about keeping a journal and highlighting in the book itself...

IamIamIam I'm planning to use it as self defense if necessary! 😂 I took it to the library the other day & made notes about what's available in other libraries in the county! I decided to use little post its until I start going at it in earnest!!! #descentintoMADNESS 1y
Emilymdxn I got given this book as a present when I was about 13 and im not kidding when I say it was my bible for years!!! I still have all the slips of paper where I recorded which ones I‘d read as a teenager. 1y
Jabberwocky @IamIamIam Oooh post it‘s are a great idea!! The weird thing for me is that I rarely use libraries- nothing against them I just tend to keep the books for too long and it ends up being cheaper to just buy it in the first place. This challenge might make me get back into libraries though! 1y
See All 22 Comments
Jabberwocky @Emilymdxn That‘s so cool! I‘m hoping for the same result one day years from now! 1y
Emilymdxn @Jabberwocky I‘m so excited to see how you find it! Which edition did you get? 1y
TrishB I use a book journal 😁 1y
Kaye I‘m glad you got it and hope you are a Spring Chicken so you‘re around to complete the list. I‘m gonna look like the skeleton long before I‘d complete the list , so I steer clear of it. 1y
Jabberwocky @kaye I‘m 23 so by my math if I live to about 100 I just need to read 4 books a week. I haven‘t gone through the ones I‘ve already read though so 😅🤷🏻‍♀️ 1y
Jabberwocky @TrishB I think that might be the best way to do this without losing my mind 🙃 1y
Jabberwocky @Emilymdxn looks like I have the 2008 edition. I‘m completely blown away by the number of books! That sounds ridiculous but 1001 is a lot of anything! 1y
sprainedbrain I love the book, but I keep track of my 1001 progress and reviews with the app. It‘s a paid app, but I think it‘s absolutely worth it! 1y
Jabberwocky @sprainedbrain ooooo that‘s ridiculously tempting 1y
sprainedbrain @Jabberwocky it has a fun feature where it figures out if you‘ll be able to finish them before you die, too. 🤣 1y
AnansiGirl Accurate description of every litten ☠️📚 #burymewithmybooks #illkeepreadingevenwhenimdead 😂 1y
ValerieAndBooks Like @sprainedbrain said I also love my copy but the app is great. I look at it at least once a day! 1y
vivastory @sprainedbrain Is the app still only available on iPhone? 1y
vivastory I have a separate note book where I log the ones I've already read & the ones I'm currently reading. In March on Goodreads I started a separate shelf for them with a rating. The online spreadsheet is also really helped, it contains the selections from all of the editions. I'm hoping to finish 1,001 in 6 years. I think I'm currently around in 160. 1y
sprainedbrain @vivastory I‘m not sure. I will send them an email! 1y
AudreyMorris I use a highlighter and ballpoint in the book, use the app, have a Goodreads shelf (which is the least effective because sometimes books are in one volume and I track editions I‘ve read on GR), and also have a spreadsheet that I think came out before the app. 1y
AshleyHoss820 I use the app, I have multiple editions in which I highlight the titles I‘ve read, I have two journals (so far) & like a true glutton for punishment, I‘m re-reading books I‘ve already read & I‘m not counting them until I do...😄😄😄 1y
AshleyHoss820 Also, I make good use of my library‘s inter-library loan (so much so that the librarians all know what I‘m up to and they check my progress...) & I can access my library‘s catalogue at home, so I went through all the books on the app (it‘s close to 1300) to see which books my library had copies of...sadly not many... #1001bookswap

merelybookish Oooh! Yes. Read it and the LETS DISCUSS. I'm still waiting for my next book. 1y
vivastory @merelybookish I will definitely be reading it in the next couple of weeks. I will message you on Goodreads. Hopefully you receive your book soon! 1y
JenP @merelybookish are waiting for the book from @Chinook I checked in with her on goodreads and she should be sending it on soon (maybe yesterday?). If you don‘t get it in a couple days, check in with her over at goodreads, she isn‘t really on here at all 1y
RebelReader @vivastory I happened to see in one of your posts that you rely on Starbucks and Kerig and it's easier to send Starbucks than it is to send Kcups 1y
merelybookish @JenP Thanks! I figured I would check in with her soon, if I didn't hear from her. 1y
