The Marigold Cottages Murder Collective
The Marigold Cottages Murder Collective | Jo Nichols

The perfect summer read, full of charm and heart, written in the vein of The Thursday Murder Club or Only Murders in the Building but with a southern California twist. Mrs. B, the landlady of The Marigold Cottages is a stubborn idealist who only rents to people she cares about: Sophie, an anxious young playwright with a dark past; Hamilton, an agoraphobe who likes to overshare; Ocean, a queer sculptor raising two kids alone; the perfectionist Lily-Ann; and Nicholas, a finance bro whos hiding secrets. The tenants live contentedly in their doll-house bungalows in Santa Barbara, just minutes from the beach, until their peace is shattered when Anthony, a quiet, hulking, but potentially violent ex-con moves in. Three weeks later, a dead body is discovered on the streets of the peaceful neighborhood. Anthony is arrested, and the tenants heave sighs of relief. Until Mrs. B, convinced that he's innocent, marches down to the police station and confesses to the crime herself. The tenants band together and form The Marigold Cottages Murder Collective to save their beloved landlady. As clues are unearthed and secrets are revealed, the community of misfits only grows more tight-knit...until a second body is found. Full of eccentricity, humor, community, The Marigold Cottages Murder Collective will keep you hooked until the last page.

4.5⭐️

The Marigold Cottages Murder Collective is a fun mystery. Mrs. B is an elderly lady who rents her cottages out to an eccentric group of tenants. An ex-con, Anthony, moves in, and soon, there's a murder. The residents don't think he did it, so they all go about trying to solve the murder, except more occur.

The ending was a surprise!

It was published on August 19, 2025. If you like mysteries, you should read this one.

This was not on my radar but I‘m so happy my attention was diverted to it because it was fun - even after finding the resolution complicated for a cozy little murder mystery🤣 I loved Mrs. B and the tenants in her six units making up this sweet Santa Barbara cottage. If this is the first in a series of neighboring supportive sleuths, count me in.

Bette Can‘t wait. I‘ve got a hold on it. 🤞 4mo

What a quirky group of residents living at Marigold Cottages.

They all felt safe until one resident that Mrs. B met at the bus stop and invited to live in the studio apartment arrived. Anthony was an ex-con.

All was well until a body was found outside the cottages one day. It had to be Anthony.

It was an entertaining read.

This is a fun mystery with delightfully quirky characters and found family. I love the format with short chapters from each character‘s POV. The short chapters make for a quicker read, and the multiple POVs bring the characters closer to the reader. The solution was fun, too. Out today (8/19). Just a day late for the #NGG #readathon.

This is an absolutely delightful mystery perfect for the fans of “The Thursday Murder Club“. I actually thought this one was better. Set in southern California the author has created a wonderful cast of characters of various ages and backgrounds. While there is a murder or two and the mystery is very good, the charm is really the characters, which I hope to see in more books. Thanks to NetGalley for the digital ARC. 4.5/5 stars
