Stray City: A Novel | Chelsey Johnson

Mehso-so

I listened to this book fairly quickly, but it‘s just not one that I found relatable nor that I gained great insight from. It was not what I expected from the blurb, spending much more time on the earlier portion than the later. I found aspects of the story interesting, but I also felt things came together a little too quickly and easily after the story skipped 10 years into the future.

I started the #readathon with an evening #audiowalk while listening to this month‘s #LitsyBookClub selection. I don‘t plan to get many hours of reading in this time, but I am going to enjoy at least a few.

tpixie I think I‘m enjoying the book- I‘m wondering where it‘s going. 3w
Daisey @tpixie I‘m close to done with the book and it wasn‘t really what I expected, but I also did not really know what to expect. I‘m not sure what I think, but I want to know where it goes! 3w
tpixie I‘ve got 3.5 hours left. I‘ve joyed it until now- now I‘m getting a little frustrated. So I hope it redeems itself as time goes on! 3w

Yesterday I finished up my listen of Sourdough as a #reread for #LitsyBookClub and enjoyed this slightly crazy but fun story just as much as the first time.

Then I started listening to Vincent & Theo, an #audiobook I‘ve been looking forward to from #AudiobookSync this summer.

I listened while cleaning out tractors and checking what fields and roads look like as the flood water continues to recede. #BooksontheFarm

Daisey Free downloads available this week through Overdrive from https://www.audiobooksync.com, including Vincent and Theo & 1mo
BarbaraBB Great. Is it about the Van Gogh brothers? 1mo
Daisey @BarbaraBB Yes, it is about the Van Gogh brothers. I‘m not very far yet, but from what I‘ve seen about it, it relies heavily on the letters Vincent wrote to Theo as source material. 1mo
BarbaraBB Heavy stuff thus! Interesting though! 1mo

I‘m listening to Sourdough as a reread for #LitsyBookClub this month. As someone who has baked with sourdough for many years, the early portion includes a fun but unrealistic story of learning to bake. I can‘t imagine anyone being so successful so fast! While listening, I‘m enjoying a supper of fresh cucumbers and a baked potato from the garden with roast beef on a sourdough roll.

sammisho This book definitely gave me unrealistic expectations! 2mo
Daisey @sammisho 😂 I think I read it so quickly the first time and was amused enough that I didn‘t really stop to think about just how unbelievably amazing her baking was from the start. I remember noticing it but not like I did today. Perfect loaves in a homemade wood fire brick oven on the first try and multiple loaves a week when she had never baked in her life is ridiculous! 2mo

The Tempest | William Shakespeare

Pickpick

Due to the many references in The Bookshop of Yesterdays to The Tempest, I decided to listen to the play next. I enjoyed the audio dramatization, but I had a hard time keeping track of the characters so I read along in some parts using #SerialReader. This was quite different from other Shakespeare plays I‘ve read, but once I got the characters figured out I enjoyed it.

JazzFeathers The Tempest is often considered one of Shakespeare's weirdest works. I still have to read it. I'll come to it sooner or later. 3mo
Libby1 @Daisey and @JazzFeathers - The Tempest is one of my favourites. 3mo

BookwormM Have you read Margaret Atwood version part of Shakespeare retold 3mo
Daisey @JazzFeathers It was very different, but that‘s part of what I liked! @Libby1 @jewright Not sure I‘ll consider it a favorite, but I enjoyed it. 3mo
Daisey @BookwormM I haven‘t, but I may need to add it to the list now. 3mo
Liz_M The Tempest is Wonderful! I love the meta-ness of reading Prospero as Shakespeare and all the allusions to theater/the stage 3mo

I listened to a bit more of this book yesterday while waiting for the boat to pick me up and finished it today while working in the garden.

I enjoyed the overall story and the literary connections used throughout as part of Miranda‘s quest to understand her family‘s story. This book is full of characters making and avoiding making difficult decisions, but I appreciated how it all came together in the end.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! I was expecting a bit more about WWII but was happy to find it focused mostly on WWI and the aftermath of WWII. I thought the back and forth between Eve & Charlie‘s perspectives was well done. I felt strongly connected to both characters and enjoyed the group dynamic of Eve, Charlie, and Finn as well.

Looking forward to discussing this with #LitsyBookClub!

#audiobook #Hoopla

JazzFeathers I've read contradicting opinions about this book, but maybe it depends on the readers expectation. I know there are lots of readers who are into WWII, far less into WWI. But since l'm more into WWI instead, maybe l should try this, after all. 3mo
Daisey @JazzFeathers From the blurb, I definitely expected it to be more a story of two women in each war, but that is not the case. The war part of the story focuses on Eve‘s experience as a spy during WWI. I have read less about WWI, and therefore tend to find it a bit more interesting currently. 3mo
tpixie @JazzFeathers & @Daisey I really enjoyed this book & all of the characters! (edited) 3mo
