The 19th Wife
The 19th Wife | David Ebershoff
It is 1875, and Ann Eliza Young has recently separated from her powerful husband, Brigham Young, prophet and leader of the Mormon Church. Expelled and an outcast, Ann Eliza embarks on a crusade to end polygamy in the United States. A rich account of her family's polygamous history is revealed, including how both she and her mother became plural wives. Yet soon after Ann Eliza's story begins, a second exquisite narrative unfoldsa tale of murder involving a polygamist family in present-day Utah. Jordan Scott, a young man who was thrown out of his fundamentalist sect years earlier, must reenter the world that cast him aside in order to discover the truth behind his father's death. And as Ann Eliza's narrative intertwines with that of Jordan's search, readers are pulled deeper into the mysteries of love, family, and faith.

2 timelines: historical fiction about the life of Ann Eliza Young, ex-wife of Brigham Young and campaigner against Mormon polygamy, and a modern mystery where a child of a polygamous marriage sets out to prove that it wasn't his mother who killed his father.

I found both parts compelling. I'd like to know more about the 19thC characters and I would read a mystery series with Jordan as a main character and Johnny and Tom as his sidekicks.

Tamra Intriguing! 7mo

I liked the first 3/4 of this dual narrative story about Brigham Young‘s 19th wife who set the dismantling of polygamy in process and a modern day 19th wife living in a fundamentalist sect who stands accused of killing her husband. Both narrative threads are well written and very interesting. I was thoroughly absorbed, but then the end seemed to drag out a little too long and was a little less than satisfying. Still a pick. #doublespin

Wasn‘t in the mood to hop right into another Kindle book, so I‘m cheating this month and reading my #doublespin first. Kindle is great, and my used copy of The 19th Wife clearly has a heinous crease in the cover, but there‘s still something a little bit more special about holding a good old paper book in my hand. I was daunted by the size of this one at first, but I‘m enjoying it so far!

Cathythoughts I seriously enjoyed this one 👍🏻👍🏻 3y

Thanks so much for sending me this book @Caroline2 - it does sound really good! I‘m very much looking forward to reading it. As you can see I‘ve already tried to remove the stickers with my magic potion, but they were tenacious little so-and-sos this time! I think they‘d been on there for ever....

Love the llama card as well - it sounds like you need that holiday, hope you have a fabulous time! ⛺️ 😘

This was fascinating!! I loved learning about the early pioneer days in America from a woman‘s perspective and then the second storyline of a modern day polygamist wife was well written too. Really good historical fiction with expert research and complex female characters that I loved. At over 600 pages my only complaint was the ending (last 200pages) felt long winded. Highly recommend tho. (As for those stickers...🤬)

squirrelbrain Sounds great - stacked! (I have some special sticker-removing stuff - courtesy of hubs of course!) 5y
KathyWheeler I really liked this book too. 5y
Cathythoughts I really enjoyed this one too ♥️👍🏻. As for those stickers 🤬I nearly went mental in the bookshop recently, but remained reasonably calm & returned a book I‘d just got because the sticker wouldn‘t come off properly... they gave me a new book ... but why do they do it 😡 5y

TrishB I already have - courtesy of @Cathythoughts 😘 thank you (both!). Just not got to yet. 5y

squirrelbrain That would be lovely @Caroline2 ! I can send it back to you destickered! The only thing it doesn‘t work on is if there‘s any foil - it rubs it off... 😬 5y
Caroline2 @squirrelbrain no worries, you can keep it or pass it on...! 👍🏻 5y
Macker11 I am in this currently!!! Only 100 pages left ! 5y
Caroline2 @Macker11 ohhhh brill, what do you think of it? 5y

The 19th wife of a polygamist has been jailed after her husband was murdered. Her son who was expelled from the community years before (as a minor) shows up to try to help her. Parallel to this story is the story of the 19th wife of Brigham Young. (she who tried to end polygamy) Good mystery. A lot of history. Interesting but a bit long.

To quote Ann Eliza : *Interest in the harem , it seems, runs deep * Well, it certainly ran deep for me , I found myself reading & watching & mistrusting with the mind of a sister wife ! This book is an excellent read. I remember watching the series Big Love , Bill Paxton & Jeanne Tripplehorn were outstanding in their roles. So , this book is giving me a real insight into the background of polygamy, & it‘s rise in Utah in the 1800‘s/ also a Murder investigation gives the book further depth. Sometimes it‘s hard to believe what I‘m reading. It‘s very well written. I‘m not finished yet, but I already know it‘s a 5⭐️

bazonka Stickers are part of the book. Like every tiny crease and mark, the stickers are personal, they are part of what makes it *my* book. 😀 6y

Having lived in Utah for 22 years, this has to be my pick for #19. #Novemberbythenumbers @JoeStalksBeck @Tiffy_Reads

britt_brooke I enjoyed this one. Living in Utah definitely gives some interesting perspective (though we only lived there for two years). 6y
Lcsmcat @britt_brooke But if they were the Warren Jeffs years, or even Elizabeth Smart, you‘d be aware of some of this stuff going on. 6y
britt_brooke @Lcsmcat Absolutely. 😬 6y

Another from my TBR for #riotgrams day 6: #numbertitles !

"It is 1875, and Ann Eliza Young has recently separated from her powerful husband, Brigham Young, prophet and leader of the Mormon Church. Expelled and an outcast, Ann Eliza embarks on a crusade to end polygamy in the United States. A rich account of her family‘s polygamous history is revealed, including how both she and her mother became plural wives."

Best historical fiction that I have read!!!! Mormon church history, Mormon cults in our days, mystery, LGBT are all in one the breathtaking book❤️ The Audio is narrated by several actors, but I checked out the actual book as well and could not put it down!

I am really not sure why I kept listening to this book. Maybe it was the hope that it would get better at some point but sorry to say I wish I could have that time back.

ramyasbookshelf I find it more difficult to stick to audiobooks when the story drags. I read the print version of this book.. and I remember it dragged in a few places but I liked it overall. 7y
drbethandherkindle I thought it was fascinating, but I also read it on kindle so it was easier to skim when it dragged. 7y

I really enjoyed this book. Not much of a mystery but the different perspectives across generations was super interesting. I would really only recommend to people who like Lifetime movies though.

@RealLifeReading

I accidentally read these almost back to back. And I couldn't have planned it better. The 19th Wife is historical fiction, re-telling the life of one of Brigham Young's wives. Under the Banner of Heaven is all too real, and many of the issues that led to the crimes discussed here stemmed from the early days of Mormonism. I recommend both, and read them together if you can.

LeahBergen I really liked Under the Banner of Heaven. I have The 19th Wife on my TBR 😬 7y
TheNextBook Thank you for sharing this! I hadn't heard of The 19th Wife but I thought Under the Banned of Heaven was amazing and extremely disturbing. 7y
britt_brooke Yes and yes!! Both are excellent reads. I love reading about the FLDS. So fascinating and disturbing, and at times, truly disgusting. 7y

cathysaid Yes! Under the Banner of Heaven is quite good. Thanks for the recommendation on The 19th Wife. Have you read Escape? 7y
Reviewsbylola I need to read Under the Banner of Heaven. 7y
Sweettartlaura @LeahBergen @TheNextBook I was so pleasantly surprised by The 19th Wife! It was a book club pick. I'm not sure any of us expected much from it, but it wound up being one of our favorite reads. Get to it when you can 😊📚 7y
Sweettartlaura @cathysaid See above ^^ 😊 7y
Sweettartlaura And thanks for the recs, @cathysaid 😊 7y
Sweettartlaura @Reviewsbylola Yep😊. seriously, if you haven't read The 19th Wife, consider doing that first - the names & stories & details there will show up in Krakauer's book, as well - it was fascinating to see. But then LDS & its offshoots are in their infancy as far as religions go. I kept wondering what it would be like to have a diary from Abraham's wife, or Jesus' mother, etc., with this much detail - how much would that tell us about those faiths? 7y
Reviewsbylola I actually have read The 19th Wife but it was years ago and my recollection isn't the best. 7y

This engrossing novel has dual narrative threads: one follows Brigham Young's 19th wife and her struggle to end polygamy, the other is about the abuses in modern-day fundamentalist polygamist sects. Highly recommended! (And the ebook is on sale!)

Here's a #workplacebook fun fact ... I was an extra in the TV movie made from this book. I bought it, but haven't actually read it yet (nor managed to watch the entire movie, for that matter 😂). #SomethingForSept

Hobbinol How cool is that?!!!🎥Were you one of the extra 18 wives?😉 8y
LeahBergen @Hobbinol The story takes place in two time periods; modern day and pioneer Mormon Utah. I was super-bummed that I wasn't hired to be all sun-bonneted and drab. I had to be "modern". ?? Oh, the fickle world of "show biz". ? 8y
SaraFair I read this! It was pretty good and so interesting, but I could have used a little more background on the reasoning behind the lifestyle. 8y
LeahBergen @SaraFair The subject matter is pretty interesting, isn't it? I WILL get to it one day 😉 8y
