2.5/5⭐ There's very little connective tissue to the story. Often an entire chapter goes onto a tangent into a side character's full history or Botswanan history/culture. The main plot doesn't make its presence known until 2/3 of the way through, and even then there's no sense of urgency or conflict/difficulty and it's distracted from with sideplots. I like the main character but there was never a hook for me. #roll100

Four books, three for #ReadingAfrica2022. The tagged one and especially The House at Sugar Beach, were absolutely great. The #Persephone was an okay read, Homo Safaricus I just finished. Review will follow soon!

If not for #ReadingAfrica2022 I would never have discovered this popular series about the lovely Mma Ramotswe, owner of the first ladies‘ detective agency in #Botswana. The mysteries she solves are not the point I think, the book especially shows a deep love for Africa. It‘s hard to believe a white man wrote this book yet he did an excellent job!

Feel like I'm the odd one out for this opinion but here it goes...
I found the characters charming but the story as a whole boring. I guess I prefer the more dramatic whodunnits than this (much more) realistic take on the detective.
Perhaps in a different mood this would suit but currently with covid still dampering the social excitement of my life, I need something with a little more oomph. Still, I finished it in a week so can't be too bad eh?

An easy reading adaptation of this novel. My library has a bunch for the ELA students, and I checked this out during the pandemic out of curiosity. The language used is simpler and the story shortened, but the adaptation maintains the core of the novel nicely. A good option for adult students learning English other than books meant for children.

I‘m slowly making my way through this series. Currently I‘ve read up to book six. I read them primarily for Mma Ramotswe‘s gentle common sense charms. They can be a tad conservative in their portrayal of gender and social changes but that aside, I really enjoy the plots and characters.

"Some people think of God as a white man, which is an idea the missionaries brought with them all those years ago and which seems to have stuck in people's mind. I do not think so, because there is no difference between white men and black men; we were all the same; we were just people.
And God was here anyway, before the missionaries came."

A witty detective novel, with a strong female lead, and it's set in Africa? Literally the perfect book for me. 👌 I finished this so quickly, and I already have the next one on order. 😁

It has been such a wonderful Friday. It's been pouring rain, and there's no sign of it stopping. I got my work meetings done, Lucas got home, we took a nap and listened to the thunder, I finished my last book, and now I'm starting this series which I've seen everywhere since I bought it per the librarian's recommendation. I'm excited to indulge on this delicious chocolate from @Meaw_catlady and lounge until Tuesday.

I have fallen in love with Precious.

This was a wonderful read. A strong female character that exactly sees the big problems in the society and her country but still has a very positive attitude. I liked it a lot.

Poignant, educational, quirky and emotional. This book reads like a series of dramas which unfold and are expertly, quietly, and efficiently handled by the fabulous main character. Precious Ramotswe is incredibly clever and, despite suffering some painful hardships, she proves to have both the confidence and knowledge to succeed in her business. I enjoyed the development of her character, especially because it allowed me appreciate the strong woman she became.

The book is quirky and cute while still delving into some serious matters and offering tidbits of wisdom throughout the pages.

This seems timely. We think we know so much when are young and then we grow into adults trying to steer our own children in the right direction, only to find them groping in the dark, overcome by the same youthful blindness. Sometimes we just have to let go, let the choices be made, and let the lessons be learned.

Short and sweet, the story of Mma Ramotswe was a little underwhelming and not really my kind of thing. I am scoring “The No.1 Ladies Detective Agency” 3 stars.

I very much enjoyed this book! It was recommended to me several times and I just loved Precious and all the cases she solves.

Yay! I‘ve finished the first part of #Booked2018 just in the knick of time! I‘m so not into cozy mysteries and I don‘t think that will change but I really enjoyed this book. I loved the writing and the characters and I will hopefully continue the series at some point! #cozymystery ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Finally starting this series

Several days into my recovery from the flu 😷 and today I decided to start in on my TBR for #marchmysterymadness and begin reading this book. I have had this book forever and today I need a pick me up book! I am also thrilled that this book will also fulfill my #litworld2018gb

Such a "curl up with a blanket and read in one sitting" kind of book! Strong, clever female character investigating cases in her small town in Africa in the only woman-owned detective agency. The author gives just enough back story while keeping it a quick, light read. Looking forward to the rest of the series!

For once I have a plan: read this Goodwill find from last week in time for my library hold to come in this week, and after that, on to The Prince of Tides so my Kindle doesn't collect dust.

The No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency is a heart warming book. Set in Botswana, it carries the adventures in the life of Mma Ramotswe -the super intelligent, independent and badass female detective. She's fearless and confident in her own skin. She's the #bosslady 😎Oh, and she loves tea ☕️ . Absolutely loved reading and laughing along with this book! 😊
