HF novel in verse. It took 10 years to complete the Panama Canal in Central America. Thousands lost their lives, and those who survived worked under the harshest conditions for only a few silver coins a day. Some workers, depending on ethnicity, received gold on payday; the rest got silver. Engle describes the before, during, and after of the canal beautifully.

Fascinating true story that doesn't end well. Kids that like creepy mysteries will love this.

The wolves and the photos are beautiful. The area itself is beautiful. The information about the wolves was interesting – I didn‘t know that wolves and ravens have a symbiotic relationship; wolves will hunt and eat many birds, but there has never been remains of ravens found in their scat. There is also a DVD included, a short documentary that says some of the same as what the book says, but of course the “photos” are now a video.

Just finished this nonfiction book about the rainforest with my class… they enjoyed it and loved learning about all of the animals that live there! #teachersoflitsy

Like a lot of contemporary picture books this tackles an important issue - the destruction of the rainforest - and has a lot of good information at the back. I liked that this is something I think kids would get excited about l. I didn‘t like that this felt mildly exploitative - like when Zonia rides a jaguar and plays hide and seek with a crocodile. #BBRC PB Letter Z #WinterGames2021 #TeamGameSleighers @StayCurious @LibrarianRyan

I'm getting a little antsy to finish #pop21, so I am starting to fill a few of the remaining, more difficult prompts, with picture books. ? And without doing that, I never would have found this beautifully illustrated story about an Asháninka girl who lives in the Peruvian rain forest!

#pop21 Title contains Q, X or Z

KarenUK That illustration is gorgeous 💕 2y
alisiakae @KarenUK @Megabooks every page was so beautiful! 2y

Cinfhen Yay!! Finishing these challenges becomes a challenge 😜 2y
alisiakae @Cinfhen @barbarabb this year is the lowest book count I‘ve had in years! I still have some #booked2021 prompts to complete too, but those are coming up next on my reading stack. (edited) 2y

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

One minute a great adventure story, the next a sobering and cautionary tale of environmental degradation/climate change, income inequality/class division, and the ever present threat of a new pandemic.
This book fuses modern science and ancient mythology.
Engaging read!
