Rescue and Jessica: A Life-Changing Friendship is a book written by Patrick Downes and Jessica Kensky and published in 2018. It is a fiction book based off a true story about a girl and her service dog. Rescue is learning how to be a service dog and Jessica has recently lost her legs due to the Boston Marathon Bombing. The two bonded and a forever friendship was formed. This book has received the Schneider Family Book Award. I enjoyed this book.
This book tells the true story of the bear Winnie who became the most famous bear in the world, Winnie-the-Pooh. A mother is telling a story to her son about how this bear came to be. It is a story about an unlikely friendship and a long journey. Long ago a veterinarian found a bear as he was on his way to treat soldiers horses in the war. He knew immediately that there was something special about the bear.
“I‘ve decided to name her Winnipeg.” Harry told them,”so we‘ll never be far from home. Winnie for short.”
I loved the way this book was set up. Some pages were full illustrations, some had text on a third of the page, some had text only at the bottom and illustrations above. The illustrations were also beautiful.
This is a realistic fiction/autobiography about a girl who had trauma to her leg which resulted in both her legs needing to be amputated. She felt defeated and so did a dog named Rescue who was looking for a companion. The two end up meeting and Rescue and Jessica are inseparable. I would definitely recommend this story to any age group it is such an impacting story.
