An absolute 5-⭐️ read! The horror is so soft, yet so palpable, and Nina‘s path to truly become the Lady of Lute is a surprisingly well-executed feminist overture. Not to mention the commentary on morality and herd mentality woven throughout—everpresent, yet never overbearing.

I loved this story. An island that is free from violence, war, and hardship for 7 years before expecting payment. The payment is 7 lives. Discover the truth along with the main character as she experiences The Day for the first time.

Folk horror is always a tough subgenre for me, never quite connecting with it. Lute fits the me not connecting with premise which is fine, however this book isn't just meh, but is in the bad camp for it's awful, obnoxious terrible American narrator that we are stuck with. She is both naive and a bit daft which makes the plot jumpy and provides 0 insight into the characters we are supposed to empathize with or something. It's direction less at best

I absolutely LOVED my first read of the month!

Lute follows American transplant and lady of the island Nina Treadway on “The Day“ — when seven of the island's residents must pay the tithe. With echoes of “The Lottery“ by Shirley Jackson and Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None, this slowly horrifying read did not disappoint!!

I really enjoyed this creepy novel. Every seven years, the tithe that keeps the island safe must be paid. Lady Nina Treadway is about to experience what happens on The Day first hand. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Tonight's read is described as “Wicker Man meets Final Destination.“ It definitely has an overall creepy vibe to it.

#StoryGraph: fiction horror dark emotional tense
288 pages | first published 2022

On the idyllic island of Lute, every seventh summer, seven people die. No more, no less. Lute and its inhabitants are blessed, year after year, with good weather, good health, and good fortune. They live a happy life, untouched by the war that rages all around them. So it‘s only fair that every seven years, on the day of the tithe, the island‘s gift is honored.

Fun book day yesterday in the mail!! Received my #fantasticstrangelingsbookclub book (tagged), the book I ordered from #Aardvarkbookclub plus the free one they sent this month… and received my #BasicWitchSwap #bws package!! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 Yay!

Chrissyreadit What do you think of Aardvark? And Lute? 1y
Avanders @Chrissyreadit I love Aardvark so far - such a great idea, and I love that they made such an effort, despite some shipping snafus their first month — and really more than made up for it a free books! They are also really responsive. We‘re about to go into month 2, so we‘ll see! Lute is so pretty, but I haven‘t been able to read (anything) in so long… hopefully I can break this slump (curse), and get back to it soon! ♥️♥️ 1y

Got this in the mail today and *devoured* it in a couple hours tonight. So, so good. A genre-bending story that just takes hold and won‘t let go. #FantasticStrangelings #JennyLawson

With lush prose, thought-provoking content, and a remarkable premise, I found it very difficult to hit pause on this novel. Thorne‘s meticulously built atmosphere was easy to get lost in, even before the real horror began, and while I was frustrated with Nina‘s adamant disbelief, that did not affect my opinion of the story. I found myself gasping out loud more than once, but I was also plagued with worry, fury, and sadness throughout the book.
