Snow Child
Snow Child | Eowyn Ivey
Alaska, 1920: a brutal place to homestead, and especially tough for recent arrivals Jack and Mabel. Childless, they are drifting apart--he breaking under the weight of the work of the farm; she crumbling from loneliness and despair. In a moment of levity during the season's first snowfall, they build a child out of snow. The next morning the snow child is gone--but they glimpse a young, blonde-haired girl running through the trees. This little girl, who calls herself Faina, seems to be a child of the woods. She hunts with a red fox at her side, skims lightly across the snow, and somehow survives alone in the Alaskan wilderness. As Jack and Mabel struggle to understand this child who could have stepped from the pages of a fairy tale, they come to love her as their own daughter. But in this beautiful, violent place things are rarely as they appear, and what they eventually learn about Faina will transform all of them.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Such a beautiful way to start a new year of reading!

In this retelling of The Snow Maiden (of Russian lore), Ivey takes us to the 1920s territory of Alaska. A childless couple has come here hoping to find a fresh start together and overcome their chasm of grief. They must also figure out how to survive the harsh landscape and unforgiving winters. One night they build a little girl out of snow and their lives are changed forever.

❄️ It‘s so hard to pick one, but I loved The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey and The Tenderness of Wolves by Stefan Penney. They left me frigid and warmed simultaneously.

I‘m 24% in on this Audiobook. So far it reminds me A LOT of „the Winter People“ by Jennifer McMahon - a couple in the middle of nowhere in winter and the wish for a child. Up until now it could seriously be another chapter in the other book. Which is perfectly fine because I loved „the Winter People“😅 I‘m enjoying it, but I also can‘t wait for something happening that feels a bit... newer😅

I found this book a beautiful story of love, struggle, independence, and love. When a childless couple moves to Alaska to escape their grief, they live a lonely harsh pioneer life. Then a little girl of the wilderness enters their life and changes it forever. Alaska and the wilderness is as much a character in this book. This is a lovely story!

This is a retelling of a Russian fairytale set in Alaska. Mabel & Jack are an older childless couple looking for a new start. The writing is gorgeous. The descriptions of the beauty & brutal nature of life in the wilderness took my breath away. The characters are layered & feel so real. It left me reeling for days.

“Alaska gave up nothing easily. It was lean & wild & indifferent to a man‘s struggle, & he had seen it in the eyes of that red fox.”

Jack and Mabel are new homesteaders in 1920s Alaska. They left their established life in part to leave behind the inescapable reminders of Mabel‘s miscarriage. Life in Alaska is isolating and hard. But on the first real snowfall, in a moment of playful joy, they build a snow-girl and the next morning Faina appears. The novel is able to keep Faina‘s essence ambiguous – whether she a fairy tale or wild child. A perfectly charming book to end 2020.

Here is my TBR post. :^) The buddy read of 'A Christmas Carol' fits right in with the paranormal themes I'm looking for this year, while getting to 'The Snow Child'.
