I‘ve been dabbling in & out of this memoir the last 2 weeks #Hoopla / at times it‘s physically difficult to understand Michael‘s narration as his Parkinson‘s causes him to slur his words and other times it‘s emotionally difficult to comprehend how much his life has been tested. But his optimism, love for & from his family, tenacity and humor are inspiring.

Cinfhen I‘m cheating….using this for #ReadingAfrica22 #Tanzania as MJF and his family travel there for a safari 😁 @BarbaraBB @Librarybelle (edited) 1d
Lizpixie (There‘s no hoverboard in the emojis) 1d
Cinfhen Hahaha @Lizpixie how about a #TeenWerewolf ?!?!? 1d
Lizpixie Ooh I forgot that one! I also thought of politician but that wasn‘t there either☹️ 12h

God what a refreshing book! Leave it to a woman who is 90 and lived through so much and made such an impact on the world to renew my hope. Jane shares stories of her life as a scientist and activist that give her four reasons to have hope for the future. The #audiobook is a very well produced conversation between the two authors.

#ImASaint #Nonfiction22 #Tanzania #ReadingAfrica2022 Would also work for #DRC 👍🏻

Cinfhen I have this lined up for #ReadingAfrica22 !!! Glad to hear it‘s a pick 1w
DGRachel Looks like I‘m changing my plans for Tanzania!! 1w
Megabooks @Cinfhen fantastic! I think you‘ll like it. 1w

Megabooks @DGRachel it‘s worth changing plans for! 1w
JamieArc I saw her speak some years ago and she was so delightful. It‘s a memory I‘m glad I have. 7d
Megabooks @JamieArc oh that is wonderful! 7d
Riveted_Reader_Melissa It‘s read by the authors! That makes me want to listen to it on audiobook even more! 7d
Megabooks @Riveted_Reader_Melissa it works really well on audio. I‘d recommend that over print 💯! 7d
Itchyfeetreader Adding this one for audio 7d
Megabooks @Itchyfeetreader 👍🏻👍🏻 enjoy! 7d
Librarybelle Great choice! 7d
Megabooks Idk why I didn‘t think of this for #HopePunk, but after reading about it, this book definitely fits. #Booked2022 @Cinfhen @BarbaraTheBibliophage @4thhouseontheleft 5d
Cinfhen I think #HopePunk needs to include a dystopian angle too…so it‘s less #grimdark 🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️ 5d
Megabooks @Cinfhen okay…then I think this would be better. To tell you why I‘d have to give spoilers but it‘s dystopian in a January 6/current events kind of way but with a hopeful ending both to the storyline and in why the author wrote it. 👍🏻 (edited) 5d
Megabooks @Cinfhen thanks!! 5d
Cinfhen Yay!!! I‘ll look for it!! It‘s getting so much press!! And though I didn‘t love his first book, I‘m curious enough to read his new one ❤️ 5d

I‘m so thankful to #ReadingAfrica22 &
#Booked2022 for giving me the extra push to finally pick up this book. In the vein of what Khaled Hosseini did for Afghan women, Abi Dare does the same for Nigerian girls in this heartbreaking yet hopeful novel. Adunni the 14yr old MC has experienced more trauma and sorrow in her young life, yet her optimism and joyful spirit is infectious. I‘m so glad I added audio narration to my Kindle purchase, 👇🏽

Cinfhen because hearing the Nigerian dialect & authentic pronunciation of the Igbo & Yoruba added so much richness to the story. So grateful for my #LoudBuddyRead friends for sharing their thoughts. 1w
RaeLovesToRead I'm only a fifth of the way in but I also was taken back to A Thousand Splendid Suns reading this far. Both books making me so so angry and conjuring the stifling and horrific realities of forced marriage. Which prompt are you using it for in #pop22? 1w

BarbaraBB Oooh sounds so good! 1w
squirrelbrain Great review… looking forward to reading the rest of it! 1w
emmaturi I really enjoyed this book! 1w
TrishB Despite all the awful things, I really enjoyed it! A successful buddy read 😁 1w
Cinfhen Yay @TrishB we‘re getting better at this buddyread thing xxx 1w
Cinfhen It was a very pleasant surprise @BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain @emmaturi Better than I expected 1w
TrishB Don‘t be jinxing it 😉😘 1w
Cinfhen Hahaha 🤣 next month we have this one @TrishB 1w
Librarybelle I really need to read this one! 1w
Cinfhen It‘s really good @Librarybelle I think you‘d like it 1w
Kdgordon88 I loved Adunni! The author used a deft hand in showing the horrors of being a poor female in Nigeria while keeping her dream of having and using her voice alive. It would be hard to stay hopeful with such daily abuse. 1w
Cinfhen Adunni was the right blend of heart, humor & spunk. A great character @Kdgordon88 Im eager to continue #ReadingAfrica to discover experiences for others in different African countries 1w

Cinfhen Tia‘s flogging!!! Can you believe it??? 1w
Cinfhen And how perceptive of Adunni to question why is it only the women who are in “need” of “curing” - as if male infertility is not an legitimate issue 😡 1w
TrishB I‘m on chapter 30! I‘m enjoying the book with a heavy heart. Will get back to this when I get there. ☹️ I‘m expecting!! (edited) 1w

Kdgordon88 At chap 34, finishing tonight. As @TrishB said good book, heavy heart. (edited) 1w
Cinfhen I have half hour of audio to go @TrishB @Kdgordon88 - can‘t wait to discuss book with all of the buddy -readers! So glad I finally picked this up. It was on my Kindle for too long. 1w
RaeLovesToRead Gah, I'm so intrigued..... must... not... click... spoiler tags.... 1w
squirrelbrain I‘m trying not to either! @RaeLovesToRead 1w
TrishB Tia 💔😡 I can‘t believe this is 2014!!! If I was reading this about the Middle Ages I‘d still think it was brutal. Why did no one help? Finding hard to believe that this was acceptable. 1w
RaeLovesToRead I didn't expect the flogging. When I saw this post I wondered if they had taken Adunni back to Ikati and so I stayed up to make sure she was OK... then I was nearly at the end so I stayed up longer to finish it. I'm glad it had a happy-ish ending. You know you've read a good book when you think to yourself - "I wonder how things turned out for Adunni.. it's 2022 now" before you realise she is a creation. A remarkable character & a moving story. 1w
Cinfhen Ha, exactly @RaeLovesToRead this was a really interesting look into African custom & traditions- unfortunately some of their beliefs are terrible 1w

I actually have a very busy day today so not sure how much reading/listening I‘ll get in, but here‘s what I‘m looking forward to. Two from @MallenNC #NYWD list, a #LoudBuddyRead for #Booked2022 & #ReadingAfrica22, a NF gift from @TrishB which should work for #Rebel #NF22challenge and two more NF audios! The MJF was on @Hooked_on_books #Top21of21 list ❤️

Hooked_on_books I hope you enjoy it! He has such an amazing attitude in the face of chronic illness. I listened to that book almost a full year ago and it‘s still strongly with me. I had my mom listen to it when she was struggling and it helped her a lot. 2w
Smrloomis @Hooked_on_books Thanks to both of you for posting about the MJF book. I hadn‘t really considered reading it before but I think I need to! 1w
BarbaraBB Great planning 🤍 1w

My dinner plans fell through so Im starting the #LoudBuddyRead tonight!! It‘s a no pressure self paced read for #Booked2022 #BlackOwnedPublishingHouse #ReadingAfrica22 #Nigeria

TrishB 👍🏻 mine will probably be tomorrow. Looking forward to it. 2w
squirrelbrain I‘ll try to make a start in the next few days…work should calm down a bit mid-week. (She says, hopefully!) 2w
Cinfhen I‘m already loving it @TrishB @squirrelbrain Helen, if you can borrow the audio, it‘s fabulous with the Nigerian dialect ♥️ 2w

Cinfhen Did you try audio or print @Megabooks ?? Because I think you might enjoy the audio🤷🏼‍♀️ 2w
squirrelbrain I can‘t find the audio anywhere Cindy, and TBH I have even less time for audio than I do for actual reading at the moment…. 😬 1w
Cinfhen Oh wow!!! You must be SUPER busy @squirrelbrain 1w
Megabooks Thanks for the invite, but I‘m good with my bail. 👍🏻 1w

I‘m not sure what I was expecting but this memoir was full of surprises. Omar Sharif Jr reflects on growing up as the grandson of iconic Egyptian film star Omar Sharif while also being raised by his maternal Jewish grandparents, both of whom were Holocaust survivors. Raised in Montreal, Sharif (half Muslim) attended Jewish Day school, had a Bar Mitzvah, affectionately called his grandparents Bubbi & Zaide and hid from EVERYONE that he was gay.👇🏼

Cinfhen This is his coming out story, as well as a love letter to Egypt, where he is no longer allowed to visit for fear of retribution for his homosexuality. Sharif lays bare some terrifying situations he found himself in, his road to becoming an activist, the backlash he received from both the gay & straight communities and how he found his personal freedom. 2w
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Not a memoir I would have thought twice about…but the content sounds great. Stacking. 2w

Cinfhen The writing is pretty average but the story is pretty remarkable. Such a blending of cultures and identities @Riveted_Reader_Melissa 2w
Megabooks Not sure if I‘m up for more memoirs, but this sounds interesting! 2w
Cortg Ooh! I put this on my TBR recently. Love a good memoir story. 2w
Cinfhen It was just okay @Megabooks I found it very interesting that he was raised in an Orthodox religious community given his other family background. You can wait for a rainy day to pick this up. It was short though and there was some really crazzzy stuff that happens to him. He becomes a personal assistant to a Saudi sheik and that part was pretty lascivious 2w
Cinfhen It‘s just a very unusual set of identities that OSJ deals with @Cortg and that does make for a good story 2w
BarbaraBB All those prompts! Well done 👌🏽 2w
Cinfhen Totally worth it for all the challenge prompts @BarbaraBB 😂😂 2w
Cinfhen Although his Egypt involves palaces, yachts, cooks, drivers, swimming pools and private planes @BarbaraBB not the most realistic view of Africa 2w
BarbaraBB Omar‘s reality 😜 2w
Butterfinger Wow! I need to read this book. 2w
Librarybelle Wow! I had not even heard of this one! 2w
BarbaraTheBibliophage Glad to know this one is worth the time! 2w
Smrloomis Wow, totally missed this! Glad you posted it here 😊 2w
Cinfhen I‘ll be curious to hear your thoughts if you get to it @Smrloomis I found it while searching for a book about Egypt @Librarybelle @Butterfinger although I didn‘t learn too much about the country I did appreciate hearing Omar‘s story @BarbaraTheBibliophage 2w

Completed my first #NYWD from @MallenNC list @monalyisha
While I owned the audio, it was the push from being on Melissa‘s list that caused me to finally listen. Narrated by Therse Plummer I was amused & engaged by this cat & mouse game. Works for #ReadingAfrica22 #Morocco and #PoP22 #AboutSecrets

squirrelbrain Sounds like a great read! 2w
BarbaraBB Sounds good! 2w
MallenNC I‘m glad you liked it. I through it was fun. I listened to it and the narrator made it even better. 2w
