I didn‘t find this one quite as immersive and difficult to put down as the first, but Wells is an incredibly gifted storyteller. There‘s plenty of action and deep history of the world Wells created. If the real world wasn‘t such a mess, I probably would have loved this more and finished it faster. Kudos to Wells for keeping me coming back.

To be honest, I ain‘t wild about reading on my iPad. It‘s too awkward to hold with one hand, which is how I almost always read. (I was surprised, years ago, when I learned the term “one-handed reads” usually CONNOTES something.) Still, I‘ll put up with it when it helps me get stuff off my wishlist via Hoopla. Today I‘m glad I get to read the second in this series of fantasy mysteries set in a pseudo-Dutch city.

Ruthiella Agree. I will usually choose phone over tablet if ebook via Hoopla is my only option. But neither is as comfortable as an e-reader. (edited) 3d

xicanti @Ruthiella I may start reading Hoopla books on my phone more often now I‘ve exhausted all the wish list titles available on audio. If only there was a send-to-Kobo (or even -Kindle) option! 3d

I know a lot of people don't like this series because it's not a Murderbot clone but I really enjoy my time in this world with these characters. Once again this is a dual timeline narrative and both were compelling looks at Kai and the gang. There was a sense of closure for the narrative arcs but still left room for the story to grow.

peanutnine I can't wait to read this! But I need to reread Witch King first to refresh my memory 5d

#March2025 -8 books read
One bingo line very behind in my reading goals/challenges🤷🏽‍♀️

Best book(s) Strange Sally Diamond; Family Roundabout

I will say it was a good reading month. I enjoyed all books I read. Maybe The Safekeep was my least favorite because I expected too much but I really liked this author writing style and I will like to read something else by her.

BkClubCare Quite a month! I think I mailed you something this week… but I failed to note that I did so? It might yet be buried on my desk somewhere 🥴 Wanted to thank you for the goodies in your letter ☺️🤗 17h

Another easy pick for the week. What a powerful book - it's in my top two of favorite Pratchetts. The complicated plot is gorgeously arranged and paced, and it had me in tears by the end for several reasons.

*Not* a good entry point to the Watch or Discworld series, because there's so much character growth and unexpected background.

julesG I agree, Night Watch is not a good starting point for any Discworld explorer. 1w

“You're arresting *Unmentionables*?“

“No uniform. No badge. Carrying weapons. Let's have a bit of law around here, shall we?“ said Vimes. “Snouty, where's that cocoa?“

“We'll get into trouble!“ Knock shouted.

Vimes let Knock wait until he'd lit a cigar. “We're in trouble anyway, Winsborough,' he said, shaking out the match. “It's just a case of deciding what kind we want.“

julesG So many good quotes in this book. 2w

A magical mishap throws Vimes & the serial killer he‘s chasing back in time to the eve of revolution. He‘ll have to protect his younger self, hunt down this killer, & get himself home.

The arc of growth Vimes has is just astounding. Getting thrown back to rampant corruption, police brutality, people getting kidnapped off the streets to be tortured, & yet seeing all this darkness & saying “No, this stops now.” How do we get a Sam please?🌕🌕🌕🌕🌗

julesG I think a Sam is really something that's needed in this world right now. Although, I wouldn't mind a Carrot either, but he's a bit too goody-two-shoes sometimes. 🦧 2w
BookmarkTavern @julesG As much as I love Carrot, I don‘t want someone who is so willing to see the good in every person. I‘m not feeling that generous right now. 😅 2w

When you have loads of apples and a handful of frozen berries, you have to make at least a small crumble. Right?
