The Ordeals: A Novel | Rachel Greenlaw

Pickpick

First book of 2026 finished. Overall I liked this romantasy/dark academia novel. Set in a school for “wielders” that the MC, Sophia, infiltrates to take part in the “Ordeals” a set of dangerous magical trials that the “hopefuls” must succeed in to be admitted to the college. Sophia is plucky & I liked her & the magical world it‘s set in, which also throws in vampires (the Cold Ones) & werewolves. The gifts attached to the #OUABC box were not ⬇️

DebinHawaii … their best work, but I mostly do it to get the 40-book challenge poster & champagne glass so 🤷🏻‍♀️. This book is part of a series & ended on a pretty big cliffhanger & I will probably look for the next one when it comes out. #SeriesLove2026 3d

#MajicMonday

I‘ve celebrated the past several years by getting the #OUABC Up All Night box & starting the book NYE & finishing it New Year‘s Day. The tagged book is this year‘s & it comes with gifts to open along the way, so it makes it fun. I get favorite snacks & shut my house down so I don‘t breathe in firecracker smoke. 😷

For 2026, my word is “Light” to look for the light, be the light for others & just be lighter in this dark world.🕯️

Eggs Thanks for joining in 🤗 6d

BarbaraJean You're not alone in this... 🙃 I have a list of 15+ books I need to catch up on reviewing!! 😱 Solidarity! (edited) 3w
BookishMarginalia I gave up on reviewing a long time ago 🤣🤣🤣 3w
CindyMyLifeIsLit I have a bunch! So many that I‘m looking at some of them and thinking, “Did I read that? What was it about?” 🙄 Old age and procrastination are not a good mix! 😂😂 3w
WanderingBookaneer @CindyMyLifeIsLit : I was going to change some to Want To Read because I did not remember reading them, but when I read the plot summaries I realized I had. 3w

This installment in the #Discworld series has Vimes travelling back in time and encountering his younger self. I loved learning more about Vimes's back story and seeing his character develop.

4/5

With a new theory of where the Heirarch's Well may be, Kai and his allies work to ensure that no new Heirarch will be created. In the past, Kai must work to bring the dust witches into Bashasa's army as they continue their fight to defeat the Heirarchs.

I love the ways the two story entangle. We know how the war ends, but the details of what truly happened are slowly revealed through both the past and present story lines.

I didn‘t find this one quite as immersive and difficult to put down as the first, but Wells is an incredibly gifted storyteller. There‘s plenty of action and deep history of the world Wells created. If the real world wasn‘t such a mess, I probably would have loved this more and finished it faster. Kudos to Wells for keeping me coming back.

To be honest, I ain‘t wild about reading on my iPad. It‘s too awkward to hold with one hand, which is how I almost always read. (I was surprised, years ago, when I learned the term “one-handed reads” usually CONNOTES something.) Still, I‘ll put up with it when it helps me get stuff off my wishlist via Hoopla. Today I‘m glad I get to read the second in this series of fantasy mysteries set in a pseudo-Dutch city.

Ruthiella Agree. I will usually choose phone over tablet if ebook via Hoopla is my only option. But neither is as comfortable as an e-reader. (edited) 2mo

xicanti @Ruthiella I may start reading Hoopla books on my phone more often now I‘ve exhausted all the wish list titles available on audio. If only there was a send-to-Kobo (or even -Kindle) option! 2mo

#March2025 -8 books read
One bingo line very behind in my reading goals/challenges🤷🏽‍♀️

Best book(s) Strange Sally Diamond; Family Roundabout

I will say it was a good reading month. I enjoyed all books I read. Maybe The Safekeep was my least favorite because I expected too much but I really liked this author writing style and I will like to read something else by her.

BkClubCare Quite a month! I think I mailed you something this week… but I failed to note that I did so? It might yet be buried on my desk somewhere 🥴 Wanted to thank you for the goodies in your letter ☺️🤗 2mo
